Urban Meyer Our Next Coach?

WoodyWorshiper

THINK, Before You Speak
Former College Pick'Em Champ
Been kick'in this thought around in my head since last sunday. The way I see it, Coach Tress is probably good for about 10-12 more years here. I believe he's about 57 right now, and that would take him to damn near 70. I don't see him as a Jo-Pa who'll prowl the sidelines forever.

That being said, I look at Meyer and see him as the perfect fit to replace JT when he retires. Meyer would be about 52-54 years old at that time, and I'm sure he'll have a great resume (hopefully NOT a 2006 NC) that would make him a very attractive candidate for the job. His roots are strong here in NEO, plus he's a hard-ass but in a fair way. The guy has proven that's he's a winner, a strong recruiter, and his value system is spot-on. I'd take this guy in a heartbeat when JT decides to hang'em up.

also, if meyer is the coach we'd want in 15 years, he'd also likely be the coach that is so successful for those 15 years that he'd never leave florida. i expect this type of discussion on bucknuts (or whatever it is now)--but not here.

Like Roy Williams at Kansas...continue the discussion...

williams played jv basketball for unc and was an assistant coach for about ten years at unc. furthermore, it was always publically known that williams has at heart a tar heel, even while a head coach at kansas. meyer never played for ohio state and was an assistant coach for just two seasons. though he respects the program and was, i believe, raised a fan (?), i have never heard that meyer desired to be a head coach at osu like williams did for unc.

again, having a discussion about who will replace tressel is very premature and is borderline sacrilege.

JT is good for another 15-20 years...I have little doubt he'll coach until he's about 70 or so. Now, if he should quit coaching before then, I'd like to see Hazell take over as head coach. But, if JT indeed coaches until he's 70 or so, I would bet Fickell would be ready to take over...

I think he likes us....just a victim of circumstance
there is no question that he likes us; however, comparing meyer to williams is comparing apples to orangutans. sure, meyer coached at ohio state for two seasons and was raised a buckeye fan, but in no way does his passion to coach at ohio state compare to the passion that williams had for coaching north carolina while he was at kansas. the jayhawks knew it. the fanbase was constantly worried that williams would leave their school for north carolina, especially when smith resigned in 97. williams turned down the first offer that year but then accepted three years later. i don't think that meyer has that same passion for ohio state.

the administration will cross this bridge in, we hope, about 2020. way too many things will happen between now and then for this discussion to hold merit.

There is a radio talk show host down here in J-ville who already suggested this very same question to me if Tressel would win another N/C, would the
Browns consider him for a coaching job to replace Romeo Cronel should Romeo start to lose the reigns for the Browns. Ya know even though Tressel seems steeped in Scarlet and Gray forever, this possibility could come to fruition some day. I never thought i would live to see the day Stever Spurrier leaving his alma mater Florida but it damn sure happened. There a still many bitter Gator fans still reeling after that move. So i think WoodyWorshiper has a valid thread here and Urban Meyer would be an outstanding selection. And i will tell you another thing - alot of Gator fans are still not convinced that Urban Meyer is the man for Florida. I know alot of rabid Ohio State fans exist in this country but Gator fans are worse. We all know that many have said that Jim Tressel is the best play calling football coach in college football and he is gaining notoriety here in the south. Personally I dont want to see this move ever happening soon but lets be realistic, it could happen. You never know.

The question should be why would JT consider accepting an offer from the Browns. I rest easy at night in the knowledge that Tressel will not be patterning his career after that of Steve Superior. :tongue2:

In all likelyhood the tOSU program would have to suffer some sort of catastrophic collapse for JT to not finish his career here.

And I think it is quite possible Urban Meyer could be our head coachj some day. Nothing wrong with a little idle speculation. :)

I would imagine that between then and now we will have quite a few assistants come in and leave for head coaching jobs and create a name for themselves. I'd bet the "Tress Tree" will be very branchy with a lot of classy coaches fighting for the right to bet back to tOSU. Maybe even steal a coach from tsun (St. school, not the U up north).

Let the Browns find their own damn coach. I like JT just fine here. Why run the risk of ruining what we have here? Everyone in the state and many outside the state love tOSU, not the same from the Browns. I am not a Browns fans, but I believe Romeo is a great choice for them. He reminds me of Marvin Lewis and should give that team a turnaround with time.
