Here's an interesting article. Saw it on the news last night that a high school boys team from Minnesota beat the USA Women's hockey team. I was actually pretty surprised. Even though the high school boys are probably physcally superior, you'd think that an Olympic squad (Current World Champions) would be much better technically.

Edit: Geography Error

im pretty sure it was the reigning minnesota state champions.

That still doesn't seem like it says much for the women. I would hope that a WNBA all star team would beat most HS boys bball teams. On the other hand I guess 1 6'5+" athletic male center (not to mention a guy like Oden) should be able to physically dominate any pro woman, but I would hope the rest of the WNBA team could hold their own shooting and defending against HSers.

youre probably looking at the best hs hockey team in america. minnesota is the king of hs hockey. the real sad thing is that a ton of ohl, chl, qmjhl, whl teams would lay the smack down on this hs team.

i believe the woman handle the candains pretty easliy not to long ago.

U.S. Women's Hockey Tops Canada, 5-3

Code:
WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Krissy Wendell scored two goals to help the United States beat Canada 5-3 in women's exhibition hockey on Sunday.

The game was the last meeting between the teams before they head to the Olympic Games in Turin, Italy, in February.

The defending Olympic champion Canadians are now 8-2 against the Americans since September. Their other loss was a 2-1 shootout during an exhibition game Nov. 27 in Ohio.

U.S. head coach Ben Smith said he doesn't think Canada's pre-Olympic record against them will weigh heavily on his players' minds.

``I didn't see any podiums out there today so I think we'll stay calm,'' Smith said.

The Americans quickly silenced some of the 12,628 fans at MTS Centre, many clad in red and white, when Wendell beat Canadian goalie Charline Labonte with a wrap-around 21 seconds into the game.

Canada evened it up three minutes later on the power play when Gina Kingsbury fired the puck past Pam Dreyer during a scramble in front of the crease.

The first period ended with the United States ahead 2-1 on a goal by Katie King at 14:16.

After killing off two power plays, the Canadians tied the game on a goal by Danielle Goyette at 13:28.

Jenny Potter gave the U.S. a 3-2 lead five minutes into the third period, but Canadian Cheryl Pounder sent a rebound behind Dreyer to even it up again at 9:32.

Kristin King and Wendell then stretched the lead to 5-3 with goals three minutes apart.

``We just didn't compete,'' Canadian coach Melody Davidson said after using a profanity to describe the club's performance. ``We'll be much better the next days and the next games, but that's just not acceptable.''

The powerhouses of women's hockey begin their quest for Olympic gold on Feb. 11. Canada opens against Italy and the U.S. takes on Switzerland.

Canada's 20-member squad includes 13 veterans who won gold at the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002, and seven who also took home silver from the 1998 Games in Nagano, Japan.

The Americans are the current world champions after beating Canada last April in a shootout following a 0-0 tie in regulation and overtime.

I don't follow women's hockey enough to know if being world champions mean's being the best team in the world, or if it means the best team of people who feel like representing their country (i.e. US Basketball).

Edit: one of these time's i will make a post that doesn't need an edit... promise. how do i insert an article so that you can tell it's an article... in the box

You don't think "male pride" had a lot to do with it?

EDIT: Just noticed this line in the article: "About 1,500 people turned out for the exhibition game, which was non-checking."

WTF?

An upper-level high school boys basketball team (Montrose Christian, Oak Hill Academy, etc.) should beat the WNBA all-stars by 20.

I say they you're about right if not beating them by more than 20!

I can guarantee you no one in the WNBA could stop Greg Oden. A 7-foot monster center vs. Lisa Leslie, a 6'5" center? Not really much of a matchup there.

I think the same would have to hold true for the best boys' hockey players in the country. The ice speed of these guys is probably way too much even for the best female players in the world.
Also, I'm quite certain the fastest high school high school boy sprinters in the country would hold the female world record in every major sprint category.

But, an average to above average high school boys basketball or hockey team would probably lose to an all-star cast of adult women.

I wouldn't say its a sad thing that CHL teams would beat the HS team because they are pulling talent out of a much larger area, including the US. The HS teams are more equal to A level to AAA level team in Canada, depending on the HS. The US women's team did win the last exhibition game between Canada and them, but overall the all-time record between our countries is fairly equal I believe. Actually its probably one of the best rivalries in sports right now.
