USA hoops update thread

Dang, I didn't realize so many BP posters were racist. :roll1:
I know what you are saying man...that story ticked me off too!

I assume you are referring to the story that was posted on ESPN. That was the most moronic article I've ever read! People look for any excuse they can to play the race card. I realize there are still a few narrow minded "good ol boys" that still get their jollys off of hating anyone different than them...but in my opinion, racism is way overplayed in a time where I'd think people are more educated.

I'd like to think that I cheer for the heart of a team and not the color of their skin. I mean, a majority of professional athletes in this country are African American and I never think twice about it. I see more discrimination in basketball and football players because they are white. People now assume they can't be as good. It was a huge deal when the white sprinter won his race because no one expects the white athlete to outperform his african american peers.

I just wish people would take things at their surface value instead of looking so deep into it and coming out crying "Racism"!

Here's a list of the ignorant fucking posts on this thread that I've gotten to read, and pretty much sums up the feeling in America about this team. It is a feeling wrought with arrogance and just sounds like a bunch of spoiled brats who can't accept that international basketball teams aren't fucking third grade teams out there. Way to give the Argentinian team some credit. No wonder the Olympics isn't popular in the U.S. - because we have no fucking Olympic spirit. We're too good for it.

This "team" is an absolute fucking embarassment. The NBA has turned into the "Homeboy Streetball Assocation". All those NBA players who refused to play for their country should be docked a year's pay.

Yeah, because they didn't win the gold, they are an embarrassment? How ignorant is that. An embarrassment is the American reaction to this team the failure of the American people to realize or educate themselves about what has happened in international basketball. People think you can just put a bunch of All Stars together say "practice for two weeks and win us the gold medal". Bullshit! If you took the best players in the NBA outside of the Detroit Pistons, gave them a week to practice to play the Pistons, the Pistons would destroy that team.

great stuff. It's always nice to see a team full of thugs, underachivers, and individualists fail miserably

Thugs? No one on that fucking team has ever even been charged with a felony, and less than a quarter have ever even been charged with misdemeanors. That's charges, not conviction as well. Hell, I've been conviction of a misdemeanor before, but I guess I'm just a thug. This is the typical reaction I've heard at bars and on the street. They wanted this team to lose, and you can come up with any multitude of reasons for why this is the case. Jason Whitlock called it racism. Well, for some people, it probably is. I call it culturalism. Some of the players on this team, and Allen Iverson is pretty much the poster boy for the haters, represent an outcast culture among mainstream sports fans - and that culture is urban culture, and it is composed of mainly black people. So when Jason Whitlock calls these haters racists, I think he's onto something.

Hopefully USA wins the bronze, only so that Iverson, Marbury, and co. have to sit there while the Argentinian national anthem is played. they deserve no less

Why don't we just whip them when they get home like Uday Hussein would do? I mean I've heard them called a "disgrace", "embarrassment" - strong reasons for torture. Afterall, it's the punishment they must "deserve".

Way to support the Red, White, and Blue America!! No wonder none of those "other" NBA stars didn't want to play on this team. They knew they would get hell if they didn't return with what America apparently believes is rightfully theirs - The Olympic Gold Medal in basketball. Why don't you assholes suit up in 2008 and win it in Beijing if you think it belongs to you.

whoa

Better watch out stadiumdorm, some people here will get nervous about your keen insight and call you a "PC idiot" like they called me. You can't reason with racists, nor can you call them out of their closet....no duck tests allowed....

That Tim Duncan...serious thug.....

Well, thank you very much, StupidassDork, for your informed, non-emotional, and highly articulate and education response. Allow me to make a feeble attempt at making a few counterpoints to your Nobel Laureate editorial:

1. This team is indeed a "fucking embarrassment". They got completely humbled by three teams whose members collectively do not belong on the same court as us. They didn't lose any of the games by a fluke shot or a horrible call by an official...they got totally schooled both on the court and on the sidelines on how to play team basketball.

2. You speak of "the failure of the American people to realize or educate themselves about what has happened in international basketball." Well, take a look at the difference between the 2000 team and the 2004 team:

2000 Team Results
United States 119, China 72
United States 93, Italy 61
United States 85, Lithuania 76
United States 102, New Zealand 56
United States 106, France 94
United States 85, Lithuania 83
United States 95, France 85

Average score: United States 98, Opponent 75 (23-point margin)

2004 Team Results
Puerto Rico 92, United States 73
United States 77, Greece 71
United States 89, Australia 79
Lithuania 94, United States 90
United States 89, Angola 53
United States 102, Spain 94
Argentina 89, United States 81

Average score: United States 86, Opponents 81 (5-point margin)

You think that the world has made up 18 points per game in just four years? Put the crack pipe down, Cheech. The real problem is that many of our very best players decided that patriotism didn't override monetary concerns. How many NBA players in 2000 refused to play for the Olympic team? I don't recall a single one. Also, I don't but into your crap about not being able to play together on short-notice. NBA players get traded all the time...trades don't get held up because "it'll take a lot of time for him to get used to his new team". If the US players are truly the best, then they should be able to gel together enough in the time prior to the Olympics. Then again, if they didn't have to waste precious weeks scrambling to find willing players...

3. Your statement, "I call it culturalism. Some of the players on this team, and Allen Iverson is pretty much the poster boy for the haters, represent an outcast culture among mainstream sports fans - and that culture is urban culture, and it is composed of mainly black people. So when Jason Whitlock calls these haters racists, I think he's onto something." Don't sit there and glamorize the "urban plight". No one teaches kids in the city their chest-thumpin', super pimpin', bitch-ho slappin' ways but themselves. Team work is near non-existant...in it's stead is self-glorification and supreme showboating. And I don't want to hear insinuation that all us white folks in the country are in front of the TV wishing, "Well, gosh damn Billy-Bob, I sho do wish that thar team fulla niggers loses to them fine ol' white folk from Lit'u'wayna...hee yuk." Americans rooted just as hard for the US team when it became comprised mainly of blacks as they did when it was all white. Hell, look at the composition of the 1992, 1996 and 2000 teams...how many fuckin' white boys were on them? Yet, America pulled for them nonetheless because they wore Red, White, and Blue and had the letters "USA" on their chests. The difference was that those players played as a team and wanted to be there. Now, Duncan and James are the exceptions, but otherwise I don't see many team-style players for us. Now for your last bit of genius:

4. "Way to support the Red, White, and Blue America!! No wonder none of those "other" NBA stars didn't want to play on this team. They knew they would get hell if they didn't return with what America apparently believes is rightfully theirs - The Olympic Gold Medal in basketball. Why don't you assholes suit up in 2008 and win it in Beijing if you think it belongs to you." This isn't some sport where we should be lucky if we are competitive...this is a sport which we invented and in which people get paid obscene amounts of money to be the best. An upset on an off-night at the hands of one of the worlds best national teams would be hard to swallow yet somewhat understandable. However, losing more games in a single Olympics than we previously had lost in the history of the Olympics is absolutely inexcusable. Oh yeah, if they "knew they would get hell if they didn't return with what America apparently believes is rightfully theirs", don't you think they'd try harder to win?

There should be a clause in all NBA contracts that stipulates they must play for the US Olympic team if chosen. If we had Shaq, Kobe, BenWa, etc., playing, I don't think we'd be here yakking about a 3-loss team.

Lastly, don't ever question my patriotism, fuckwad. I put 26 years in the service, with 24 years overseas including five years away from my kids. I'll always root hard for the US basketball team, win or lose...but if I feel they're not up to snuff, I'm going to call a spade a spade (pun intended).

and the winner is............mili

stadium.........you are an idiot. none of what you said holds any merit...and mili rightfully ripped you apart. aside from what he said, id like to add that i was rooting FOR this team, as i think most people were. they were just embarassed by the piss poor showing, as i think most people should be.

what really pisses me off is the statement "the international game has caught up." no it hasnt. it caught up to a poorly constructed group of our second and sometimes third, fourth, or fifth options. we had our C team up against the international A+ teams. no fucking way do we lose with shaq, kobe, garnett.....hell, ONE of those guys. not only are they impossible to guard (even in a zone), but they have more heart than anybody on this team right now excluding lebron and duncan.

and for whatever reason 1 of the 2 players who shouldve played every second of every game was on the bench for probably more than half the time. lebron and duncan couldve hand picked college players and kicked ass.

you say you want me to suit up for beijing? fine. i can hit a 20 foot shot. i can hit a 15 foot shot. i can hit a 10 foot shot. these chumps can either dunk or dunk. howd that work out for us?

People like you Milani don't realize how easy it was for the international teams to catch up and how stacked the deck was against the Americans. Ironically, it's the 1992 Dream Team which really was the catalyst for the popularization of basketball to this point around the world. Kids in these countries started to idolize those players on the dream team. By 2000, a lot of these countries began to assemble rosters filled with youth (except for Serbia-Montenegro), and the bulk of those rosters are still in tact, as many of those players have been playing together since. Furthermore, if you look at your so-called statistical analysis from 2000 to 2004, you'll notice that in 2000, there were tough games for the U.S., and they probably should have lost the semifinal game to Lithuania in Sydney. But, people forget that, and just wonder what happened in four years. Those teams got four years better, that's what happened - and they were getting better to begin with.

These teams practiced the international style of play. They focused on shooting because that's a premium with the 3-point line in so far, and with zone defense so prevalent. And more importantly, the bulk of these teams practiced TOGETHER. If you don't know the value of a team practicing together, then as I said, you don't know shit about basketball. Yes, an NBA team may be able at times to insert 1, and I say ONE new player via trade into an already in-place system, and have them fit in that system. Obviously, Rasheed Wallace comes to mind. I would say Manu Ginobili comes to mind, but he's been playing with those guys every summer and only took two weeks off after the Spurs got knocked out by the Lakers before he rejoined his team this summer - while a lot of our team had yet to be filled I might add.

You say I react with emotion, and hell yeah I do. But you react with arrogance, as I stated previously. You think because we invented the sport, we ought to win. That's ridiculous. Canada invented hockey, and in the 70s, they found out for the first time how easy it is for the international competition to catch up. They still can't get over it. That's arrogance, and I laugh at them for that. But, when the country I live in acts the same way, I'm "fucking embarrassed". Like I said, put on a jersey and go earn your fucking gold medal in the sport we invented.

And if I want to call people out on their hypocritical patriotism, I will. I never called you out personally, but you probably fit the bill for the people I was calling out - those people that want to disown this team, because they feel they "disgraced" America. Did the 4x100 men's freestyle team embarrass the U.S.A. because the got the bronze in an event we have dominated? Didn't hear anyone calling them out. So why does the basketball team get the shaft from the American people? Why don't they deserve our support? I won't give you the answer, you can just mull in over.

and the winner is............mili
Nice to know that, like in the sport of gymnastics, there's objective judging.

No, the shooting wasn't good. But, even if we had a Michael Redd or an Allan Houston on this team, we would have lost at least one game. Does anyone remember the 2000 team having to make a great comeback against Lithuania in Sydney to only win by two? Guess not. Now I know what I'm up against. And I'm getting to really love the word "embarrassment".

what really pisses me off is the statement "the international game has caught up." no it hasnt. it caught up to a poorly constructed group of our second and sometimes third, fourth, or fifth options. we had our C team up against the international A+ teams. no fucking way do we lose with shaq, kobe, garnett.....hell, ONE of those guys. not only are they impossible to guard (even in a zone), but they have more heart than anybody on this team right now excluding lebron and duncan.
Yes, the international game is the same as it has always been. None of those NBA execs knows what they're doing to when they draft guys with unpronouncable names. And I'd love to see Shaq not foul out of an international game. That would be a neat trick. I'd also love to see Kobe become a team player - just like i'd like to fly.

and for whatever reason 1 of the 2 players who shouldve played every second of every game was on the bench for probably more than half the time. lebron and duncan couldve hand picked college players and kicked ass.
Would be pretty nice to watch Gerry McNamara guard Manu Ginobili. Yeah, that would work well when Manu takes him with his left. Of course, you're also assuming the officials decide not to call fouls on Duncan - because I would be for that. Lebron play every second? No. I watched him log plenty of minutes with the Cavs this season, and as the game wears on, his defense turns into, well, the other team's offense. Sure he should have played more, but that's the coach's decision, and I think he's more qualified than you or I to make that determination.

No, I think you did a pretty good job. 82 times plus playoffs? Wow! Why don't they just rest at home instead of playing basketball for free for you? I mean they're millionaires and they're stars. Why even waste the time huh? And I guess Michael Phelps isn't a star, and he won't eventually be a millionaire. Oh, you didn't know he was on that team. I keep forgetting I'm dealing with people who don't inform themselves.

wow...not only are you a fucking moron....but youre a pyschic moron.

yeah those international guys are working out real well. thats why so many of them are dominating the game. oh wait.......theres like 4. sam bowie got drafted by those same NBA execs before michael jordan. but that was probably a good move because they are NBA execs.

who gives a shit if shaq fouls out. he would do it scoring 30 points and allowing our defense to play tighter on the perimeter. oh no...manu ginobili might school lebron....then whats he gonna do? eat basketball courtesy of shaq.

manu takes him with his left and the ZONE that would be played would swallow him up. oh i forgot. mcnamara plays shitty defense. how stupid of me................no wait, your stupid. (you picked a syracuse bball fan to talk shit with )

but you are right.....i dont know enough about basketball to know how to coach. im only a basketball coach myself. and nobody is questioning larry brown except for me. im the ONLY one. face it, larry brown made some god awful decisions. you dont have to be an NBA coach, or even your heralded NBA execs, to know this.

Good luck getting your shot off! Haha!
oh thats right. im a 300 pound 5 foot 3 fatass whos never played basketball before. and you know all this because you know who i am. i must really suck at basketball. :roll1:

im done with your pathetic ass. reply all you want in this thread or any other....ill just ignore you because you are ignorant and i dont feel like cluttering this board up with anymore of your nonsense.
