USC - Starter troubles?

AirForceBuck

No mercy
In a new article on ESPN.com (College Football section) it says that even though Matt Leinhart is returning, other starters might not be (at USC). These starters include: Dom Bryd (TE), LenDale White (RB), Frostee Rucker (DL), Manueal Wright (DL). Apparantly, they all are either at the bottom or very low on the depth chart right now and did not participate in spring practices. It is in good specualtion that it may be academic trouble. Wright has been in contact with the NFL about possibly entering the supplimental draft, but says it is his "last option" if he cant play ball at USC this year.

Man - I smell trouble brewing there in SoCal, hopefully everything is resolved or it could be a long year if this behaviors becomes a trend.

Yeah, they still look damn loaded to me. I just hope that the academics wont be an on going issue with the players all ready in hot water or other players on their team. They are a great squad and I know I am not trying to hear any excuses like, "Well, we were missing alot of our starters thats why we lost" or other things of that nature, ya know? I think the biggest shocker right now is going to be LenDale White to me. Hope they can get their act together.

USC is recruiting at a level right now where every player loss simply creates a vacancy for some young stud. Frankly their program would have more problems if everyone stayed for four years.

Oh8ch is dead on. If you look at the top-100 lists of all the major recruiting services, it seems that 70% list USC in their top 5. USC virtually can cherry pick from the very best talent all across the country. I do have the feeling that this will not last forever, though.

Whats wrong with White? If I remember right I though he had surgery. Thats probably why he's not listed. White was their main running back last year despite if Bush was considered the starter.
Im not sure if White had surgery, but both Bryd and Rucker did did go under the knife this offseason...Sorry for not posting this article or link before, but I was at work (wating to get off) and for some reason they have our right clicker disabled. HERE is the article:

USC quarterback Matt Leinart is returning, but other starters might not be.

The Los Angeles Times reported on Saturday that one or more returning players who did not participate in spring practice might be academically ineligible for the 2005 season. Tight end Dominique Byrd, running back LenDale White and defensive linemen Frostee Rucker and Manuel Wright are currently listed at or near the bottom of the depth chart.

"It's going to be a challenge to get all the guys back," Trojans coach Pete Carroll acknowledged to the Times.

Wright, a junior, said he has contacted the NFL about entering the supplemental draft, but he said that is "the last option" if he isn't eligible to play for USC. Wright has been out of high school for three years, meeting NFL requirements.

"I'm studying, putting in a lot of work, so it's not like I'm not going to give it a good run or not going to try," Wright told the Times. "I could be lazy and just be like, 'Forget it, and go home. I'm going to the draft and call it a day.' But, obviously, I want to play here."

Wright's father, Terence, said Wright could either redshirt at USC or transfer to a Division II school if he is ineligible.

"But his priority, and our family's priority, is for him to stay at USC," Terence Wright told the Times.

White, a junior, told the Times he has been attending classes regularly and isn't worried about where he is listed on the depth chart.

"It makes it better for me -- it makes me hungry," he said. "You watch. I'll be starting."

Byrd, a senior, suffered a broken jaw during a fight several weeks ago. Rucker, also a senior, had toe surgery after the Orange Bowl.

You know what, I really don't agree with the fact that people want USC's starters back in the case we beat them in Pasadena (which is a long way away)

For every D1 athlete that is eligible, there are hundred of students at the same school who are eligible also, they just aren't athletes.

To be a D1 athlete, you have to stay eligible. If they don't have eligible athletes, that's their fault not ours, or any one else. I

If Leinhart, White, Bush, Smith, and everyone were ineligible and we beat them by 1 in the Rose Bowl for a NC, it doesn't matter to me, our D1 eligible athletes beat their D1 eligible athletes, end of story.

I understand where you are coming from, I just really disagree with that whole asterick type phrase "we didn't have our starters" because, actually, yes you did. You had other athletes associated with the program that may have made an impact, but guess what? They were ineligible, and our were ready to play.

In other news, I'm pretty shitfaced, and my birthday ruled. GO BUCKS!

I don't believe that they will "miss a beat" if they lose a player or two. Like Oh8ch said, they have plenty of "studs" to replace any losses. USC may be at a point right now that was like Nebraska was in the early 1980's through the early 1990's and Miami was through the 1990's, i. e. they didn't have to REBUILD they just RELOADED!!!
