MIAMI -- Two years after stepping down as Heat coach, team president Pat Riley is resuming the position.

Riley takes over for Stan Van Gundy, who said he resigned for personal reasons.

"I love coaching, but I love my family more," Van Gundy said at an 11 a.m. news conference. "I need some time to be with them. I'm not willing to sacrifice that anymore. Priorities change over time. It grew to the point of being absolutely painful."

Van Gundy and his wife, Kim, have four children - Shannon (14), Michael (11), Alsion (9) and Kelly (6).

"I felt I was running out of time with them," he said. "I want to be sitting with my son at games. I've only got four more years with my older daughter before she's off to college. I'm going out to look at Christmas lights with my daughters tonight."

Van Gundy shot down speculation that he was being forced out.

"If I'm getting forced out I would have gotten every dollar on my contract," said Van Gundy. "That's not the case."

Riley said returning to the Heat bench was an easy decision for him to make.

"I have an obligation to this franchise and to [owner] Micky [Arison] and to this team and the players I traded for and I think I'm the best person to do that," Riley said. "But I'm proud of what Stan has done. This was not my intention."

Riley ranks third on the NBA's all-time victory list among coaches at 1,110, behind only retired coaches Lenny Wilkens (1,332) and Don Nelson (1,190). His career coaching winning percentage of .661 places him third among active coaches, behind only Phil Jackson and Gregg Popovich.

The Heat is 11-10 and in first place in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference. The team on Sunday regained the services of Shaquille O'Neal, after the All-Star center missed the previous 18 games with a sprained right ankle.

Riley previously had vehemently denied that would include a return as coach in place of Van Gundy.

But Riley also has made it clear, with his offseason overhaul of his roster, that he would have a more active involvement with the team this season.

In the offseason, Riley traded swingman Eddie Jones and forward Rasual Butler and added guards Jason Williams and Gary Payton and forwards James Posey and Antoine Walker.

On the eve of the season, Riley said of having a more active involvement, "I built something here for 10 years. I sure as hell don't want to just walk away from it."

During that same period, Van Gundy said he believed Riley would remain solely in his front-office position.

Even with Riley only in the front office, Heat players had continued to refer to him as "coach."

Van Gundy went 101-63 in his first two seasons as coach, guiding the Heat to the Eastern Conference semifinals in 2004 and within two minutes of last season's NBA Finals, before losing in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals to the Detroit Pistons.

Riley, though, had steadfastly denied the possibility.

Riley often has been regular at practice at AmericanAirlines Arena, watching from a folding chair well away from the action, retreating to his office before reporters can approach.

Looks like Riley didn't want to give him a chance to turn it around now that Shaq is back. If the Heat were able to run off an 8 out of 10 stretch Riley wouldn't be able to touch Van Gundy for a while.

I would have put the over-under on this move at 25 games, so this seems about right.

Seriously, who didn't see this coming, especially after Shaq went out. I think it's amazing Dwayne Wade and Van Gundy kept that team above .500 with that cast of degenerates.
