You kids stay off my lawn!
The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month will find me beside the First Infantry Division monument in DC and then I'll mosey over to the Wall. I hope to meet up with Steve Slattery. Steve was CO of a Cav squadron about to go out on his first mission. Sgt. Donald Long was down to five days in country and when he heard about the mission he refused to head down to the safety of DiAn (zee on) base camp to begin to outprocess. "Captain Slats, you guys are heading into some real shit, you'll need all the experienced hands you have so I'm going." Steve kept insisting that Long go to the base camp, but Long refused.

Sure enough, the battalion ran into a shit storm and Slat's squadron was called upon to relieve a sister squadron. Outside his command track, trying to manuver his armor into the most effective positions, Slats was exposed when an NVA grenade was thrown close by. With no thought for his own life Long dove on the grenade, saving the life of Captain Slattery and several other soldiers in the vicinity.

Long was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Russell_Long#Medal_of_Honor_citation

I met up with Slats at the dedication of the statue next to the wall in 1983 and here is a photo of the two of us.

To all my fellow vets, welcome home.

November 2005, less than 30 days from going home. I was tasked to provide medical measures to one of our tank teams that had been ambushed outside Mahmudiyah, Iraq. I quickly put on my gear and grabbed up several medical kits. At about the same time, the Platoon Sergeant knocked on my door and told me to stand down on that mission. He stated the incident was more serious than indicated and the platoon medic was going to provide medical assistance.

That was the last time anyone spoke to them. Their vehicle was hit by an anti-tank mine. I was in complete shock when I heard the news. Not only had a good friend of mine been killed, but the thought of how easily that could have been me raced through my mind.

To all Veterans, I salute you. To all those who never made it home, rest in peace brothers and sisters. Your sacrifice is truly appreciated!

HAND SAUTE!

Veterans Day
By Taylor Weinman

Representing the red white and blue
The colors of our flag stand out proud and true.
The white stars on blue background with red and white stripes
Remind me of these veterans, who all risked their lives.
Just so the people of the U.S. could all live in peace and be free
These are the heroes that represent you and me.
They stood up strongly, untied as one,
And kept up the fighting until they were done.
And although some have fallen, and lost their lives in war,
We pray for each one of them.
And now that their souls live on forever more,
Above in God's hands.
They watch over our nation,
And give us strength to triumph over others with strong anticipation.
So every year, when this day comes by,
Think of all the veterans that while fighting, had to die.
And remember that they were people
With fire and passion embedded inside.
They die for this country,
So remember and honor them with pride

Thanks to all of our Veterans... words cannot express our indebtedness to you and your families for the sacrifice and service that your lives are.

If you're looking to get a little more involved, over at The Buckeye Battlecry we're compiling emails and messages to send to a fellow Buckeye fan that was wounded in Iraq and is currently hospitalized in Maryland as a part of his recovery.

If you want to drop him a note, you can do so here:

Got to see the original "Star Spangled Banner" yesterday. It takes your breath away to be there and try and grasp all that it stands for -- the stuff you love and the stuff you hate about this great country and the wonder that despite our divisions we manage to change our governments peacefully, as we did again last week, and keep on moving as E Pluribus Unum.

Here's a remembrance of coming home that I wrote some time back and that NPR put together. Welcome Home, brothers and sisters, Welcome Home!

Thanks to all of the veterans and their families who have served. We take too much for granted in this great country and if it were not for our veterans who have served and are currently serving we would be living pretty miserable lives.
