WC - USA vs Slovenia (Fri 10 ET, ESPN)

No excuses for not advancing now.

Not sure that I totally agree with that sentiment. Had we got the proper result today we would only need a tie to advance, no matter what England/Slovenia do. Now we have to win (or get some crazy shit with a draw). That's not an "excuse", it's a fact created by a terrible official.

Hopefully, we'll win and make it moot.

I didn't see it in the scenarios at the beginning of the thread, but couldn't we even advance with a USA/Algeria draw + Slovenia win or low scoring draw?

Yes, as crazy as it sounds.

I know, but we got a gift with the draw by Algeria, which leaves all 4 teams solidly on the table for elimination. We could still advance with 3 if crazy things happen (above), but I personally think that if we can't win a single group game, we don't deserve to advance. That said, I don't know that any team in the group deserves to advance at the moment.

I don't know if anyone saw this, and I apologize if I'm reposting/repeating, but I was watching or reading some sort of post-game and they asked Landon Donovan his thoughts on his rocket of a goal. In his response, he said something to the effect that he was "aiming for the head," meaning he was actually aiming to hit the keeper in the head when he struck the ball. The Slovenian keeper should feel lucky that he ducked out of the way like a chicken because that ball would have taken his head off.

I recorded this earlier today. I'm currently watching it and am at the 63 minute mark. I've scrolled through the comments without looking so as not to give away the final 30 minutes or so. I just wanted to drop a line now to see if my feelings so far about a certain aspect of this game are verified by others afterwards. Those feelings are essentially two-fold. First, Slovenia is composed of a bunch of what my teammates and I would have referred to as "bitches" back in the day. There is so much flopping, posturing, and embellishing going on on their team that it makes me sick. Second, it is unbelievable to me how often this head ref goes for it hook-line-and-sinker. I just watched Dempsey get wrestled down in the box only to have the whistle blow against him because the Slovenian player was grasping his face like he'd been hit by a 2x4. Then I watched Altidore get pulled down only to watch the ref call a foul on him because the Slovenian player went flailing about. I wouldn't say the officiating has been horrible (aside from the fantom hand ball yellow card on Findlay), but it is sickening to watch nonetheless.

So I just finished watching this abomination. Fuck that referee. I think I mentioned before, essentially, that the ref had clearly missed some calls, but it wasn't a horribly called game. Well, that final 20 minutes was a disgrace to international soccer. The only bigger disgrace would be allowing this ref to call another game in this World Cup. Let me also say that if FIFA doesn't institute a comprehensive version of video replay after this tournament, then soccer deserves to decline in world appeal. There has been scandal after scandal in professional soccer at every level, and unexplained phantom calls like that only feed the fire. Allow video replay to be the final arbiter, as in hockey.

So I waited all day to watch this game on DVR. Forced everyone around me not to tell me what happened.

And what is the fuck just happened? Does an official really have that much authority to take away a goal for no reason?

So much for convincing Americans to watch soccer, which otherwise is a terrific game in my opinon.
