Well after a hard loss, what better is there to do than look ahead?

I post that because it's true. After the Texas loss, it was a relief to look ahead to the rest of the season. After this loss, it'll be a relief to look forward to michigan and the rest of the season. Then after that we'll look forward to the bowl game.

I for one, am actually not a fairweather fan who jumps on or off the bandwagon after one bad play, or a loss. It seems people are so quick to make impulsive judgements without further review it drives me nuts.

I would give my analysis of the game ( And I don't think it was bad playcalling ) but i'll save that for another thread.

This thread we'll look forward to next year. Why not?

I for one am a believer of the fact that our offense CAN be not only good, but dominant. Our offense this year has three problems holding it back. They're undersized, we have a bad quarterback, and we make too many mistakes.

A balanced offense is how you go. Look at USC. They're just about as balanced as you can get. Same with Texas even.

Next season, here is how I think we solve our offensive woes.

-Run more out of a pro system, similar to USC, Miami, and those other programs. Use a good passing game, but not necessarily a spread attack. No gimmicks.

-Move Teddy back out to Cornerback. He's not being taken advantage of enough on offense, and should be a corner. He'll be more useful there than he is on offense.

-Solve the quarterback debate before the first game. I personally hope Schoenhoft can start as he has shown me things we havent had in any of our JT quarterbacks. That would be having a strong accurate arm. But whoever can run the offense best needs to be able to spread the ball around to all the receivers.

-Get Lyons and Dukes on the field. I have a strong feeling that Holmes will be gone this spring. With that in mind, I think that either Lyons or Gonzo will step up to take his spot. Gonzo has the edge in experience, but Lyons absolutely tore up fall camp on a bad knee. Dukes will be an excellent slot guy who can hopefully run reverses and some of the same plays we had ginn on. Lyons needs to be on the field as he adds a physical big target for a quarterback to throw to. Receivers like these are so underrated in terms of being able to move the chains.

-Get Boone on the field starting sometime this fall. We're going to need him in there with plenty of experience against big 10 caliber ends.

-Put Marcel Frost in at Tight end. Another forgotten component to the 2002 team was Ben Hartsock. Can't even explain how many clutch 3rd down catches he made. Frost looked amazingly athletic in the spring game, and we need a tight end who can get open, block, and catch as well. Something we probably don't have to the point we need to right now.

Play wise, I'm still scratching my head at why we don't get our backs into the passing game more often. Watch Notre Dame play as they use a similar system to New England did. They pass to the Runningback as much as they do the receivers.

Use Screens. Once again, I think we have used maybe two all year? Not that they're a staple of our offense, but they very well could be.

Throw the ball outside the hash marks. I honestly think the times Smith has thrown the ball outside the hash marks is in single digits still. Not many people notice this, but as the season has been going on, it's grown painfully obvious that he looks in front of his line, or nowhere.

Use more wide receiver screens. With ginn on the offense in the spread, it's easy to predict. With a more down to earth offense, and no ginn in there, we can easily set some screens to Dukes running behind Gonzo and Lyons. This type of play is a staple of the Michigan State offense, and has been extremely effective against everyone so far. San Diego state scored their touchdown on one of these.

Use more play action. Simply said, we don't use it as much as we should. Especially for the amount that we throw over the middle, and the way we use ginn, we need to pull the safeties and linebackers up and keep them honest.

I'm a believer!

Excellent post. Especially about the offense.
I am not looking ahead to next year just yet, I am looking at next week right now.

Nice post...the only issue I will debate is the play action.

We try to run play action now but two things happen:

1) It is predictable because you can (even as a casual observer) predict our plays in advance. Thus it is ineffective.

2) We don't have very well coached QBs so they spend 1.5-2.0 seconds acting out the PA instead of making their reads.

So if the opposing team sees it coming and we waste time doing it, I would simply not do it.

How about this....a Wing T? That's much more fun to watch at least.

I have your readers digest version of the 2006 OSU football preview.

Troy Smith will still be the QB.

Jim Tressel and Jim Bollman will still be the offensive brain trust.

The defense will replace 7 or 8 starters and be understandably weaker than the 2005 version.

Regular season will be anywhere between 7-5 and 9-3 depending on how quickly the D comes around.

Sad but easily predictible.

jaxbuck, could you please add a few more pessimistic comments to this board? I forgot we should just give up on next season now. There will still be flaws but to tell everyone that its easy to predict we are gonna suck next year is poor form.

Again with the form?

The offense has sucked for 5 straight years so predicting a sixth is no great stretch.

The years we do well is when we have a dominant defense to offset the offense. Again not an emotional comment, simply the truth.

The 2006 defense will replace waayyy too many good players to be as effective as the 2005 team, especially early. Again, not real hard to see if you look objectivly.

I'm not trying to be pessamistic, its simply a logical analysis. Sorry if its not what you want to hear but we are going to have 2004 type years under JT when the defense is anything less than dominant.

i agree with jax... Next year makes me look forward to Bengals football. (saying quite a bit wouldnt you say?)

I hope im wrong but I thought if anything was to work out for the Bucks...it was this year. Next year is rebuild (reload hopefully) time

glad to know the sky has already fallen on not just this year but next year. I'll be sure not to buy any tickets, or bother tuning in, b/c we're gonna suck and lose almost half of our games. Thanks for letting me know.

I don't think we're gonna make a run for the roses, but to just disregard next year is pretty stupid. We've run the ball pretty well this year, including against tough defenses... I'm not sure why there is no chance of a dominant running game.

I think that some posters are overreacting, but your not disappointed also?
I'm very disappointed. But I'm not gonna write off next year for crying out loud. Jaxbuck would be just as pissed if he were a UF fan right now, and they have "the best offensive mind in cfb" according to most in the offseason... and they could barely score on Miss State for a while, and not at all against bama.

I really don't like what bollman has accomplished. It's aggravating that our world beating defense has no help.

But I'm not gonna have such sour grapes that I give up on next year. I hate that attitude as much as those who leave early during the game when we are losing.

I wasnt calling you out, I feel the exact same. The reason for all the crying I think is because we have all been looking forward to this year for so long. Next year we lose alot of talent and experience, and our defense will not be even close to as good as it is now, and when defense is all we have right now that doesnt look that pretty...

My beef wasn't with you 77. I don't necessarily think that next year's gonna be that hot. But when things are tough, there are always the types that say well that's it, we suck and we're always gonna suck. I agree the O is leaving a lot to be desired, and makes things dicey next year without our senior defenders. Do we lose a lot? Sure, but we're not gonna be awful on D. Wilson is already starting, and could grow into a serious player at DE (Kudla was held in check pretty well yesterday, including when he wasn't held). That leaves our 4-3 DL intact. mDa has a ton of potential, and Freeman gets rave reviews. There will obviously be a big step down in the LBs. If Youboty doesn't leave early, our secondary could get better. We sure will miss nate salley, but another year for Ashton, Donte and especially Malcolm could be huge.

Dionte Johnson is a monster. Jimmy Cordle is a pretty stellar player (really wish he wouldn't have been hurt), and will be serviceable at C. We've got pretty good depth at OL, and I would argue that I liked what I saw out of Boone more than some games of Barton's, especially given how raw Boone is. We may very well be able to run the ball down people's throats better next year, especially with someone to spell Pittman. If we had Brandon Joe this year, we may have won both games. Pittman did a great job in both games but got dinged up in both and had nobody useful behind him for a sub.
