What film had the greatest soundtrack?

I'm with H&G

Purple Rain. The movie was the soundtrack.
And that's my problem with purple rain, it's a sound track that happens to have a shitty movie going on. Which is to say, the film is simply a crappy vehicle.for the music. I'm not gonna sit here and start ranking the song remains the same as a top 5. I get that it's different, but that's the rabbit hole you go down. All of which is to say, if the film sucks, it's a major black mark.

Good call on the TBL. Cohen Brothers seamlessly mixed in some esoteric shit into that. I never thought I'd hear Esquivel and Yma Sumac in the same movie as Creedence and Kennie Rogers with it all working perfectly. Somebody has a playlist on Spotify of every song used in The Big Lebowski, but I think they're somewhat out of order.

my fav from the movie

Actually, Phil Collins got me thinking about American Psycho, which has a pretty good 80s-oriented soundtrack, if only for Patrick Bateman's takes on Phil and Huey Lewis.

Patrick Bateman said:
Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where, uh, Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch is the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums.

Christie, take off the robe.

Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument.

Sabrina, remove your dress.

In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism.

Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little.

Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive, affirmative, uh, as anything I've heard in rock.

Christie, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your asshole.

Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and, uh, Against All Odds.

Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it.

But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

That Summer! (1979)

Very few people have seen the movie (including me), but the soundtrack is a near perfect compilation of post-punk "New Wave":

Side One
1. "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll" (Ian Dury and the Blockheads)
2. "Spanish Stroll" (Mink DeVille)
3. "(I Don't Want to Go to) Chelsea" (Elvis Costello)
4. "She's So Modern" (Boomtown Rats)
5. "New Life" (Zones)
6. "Another Girl, Another Planet" (The Only Ones)
7. "Whole Wide World" (Wreckless Eric)
8. "Because the Night" (Patti Smith)

Side Two
1. "Kicks" (Boomtown Rats)
2. "Rockaway Beach" (Ramones)
3. "Teenage Kicks" (The Undertones)
4. "Do Anything You Wanna Do" (Eddie and the Hotrods)
5. "What a Waste" (Ian Dury and the Blockheads)
6. "I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass" (Nick Lowe)
7. "Watching the Detectives" (Elvis Costello)
8. "Blank Generation" (Richard Hell and the Voidoids)

Soundtrack: Top Gun
Score: The Last of the Mohicans

It seems to me that in order to be considered a great soundtrack, a significant portion of the soundtrack should be original material and not just some collection of greatest hits from an era.

Oh. Well shit. I didn't know the movie had to be good.

completley disagree. Under the Cherry Moon was a shitty movie. Graffiti Bridge should have aborted. Purple Rain was a good film. wish I could find a copy of the extended version of Let’s Go Crazy that is used in the movie.

Well, I'm not going to argue with your "ranking movies with Prince in it" - but let's face it he's better at making pancakes than acting.

Did I misremember Appollonia Kotero being topless in that?
