What is the Worst Sports Scandal of All Time?

  • I was talking to my wife on the phone during lunch and she asked me a question that has had me deep in thought (and not working) ever since. I thought I would see what you guys thought. She is an alum and OSU fan, but is otherwise not all that interested in sports in general. Her question was "Is this the worst sports scandal ever?"

Thinking of great sports scandals I came up with

    1919 Black Sox Scandal
1950 CCNY Basketball Point Shaving Scandal
1951 Kentucky Basketball Point Shaving Scandal
    1995 SMU Death Penalty Case
2003 Baylor Basketball Scandal (Thanks to Bucky32)

I thinking about it before this scandal, I would have picked the Black Sox as the mother of all scandals.

And I think this may be worse with the possibility of going further south.

Did I miss any scandals and what do you think?

Note to Mods- I did not put this in the Paterno or Sandusky because I did not think it fit, but if I am wrong feel free to merge.

The assult of Nancy Kerrigan is pretty big.

Pete Rose betting on baseball also is quite the scandal.

The kneejerk reaction is always to choose the most recent. The difference between this and other scandals is that it really didn't affect the sport. It was completely off the field.

This is bad, but worst ever...probably not.

I think this is fine as its own thread. Once all of the possibilities are nominated, we could also do a poll.

If we were to include Munich, you would have to say that would be the worse but somehow that feels like something more then a scandal to me. And since I know nothing about cricket or soccer we should limit this to US sports.

And even though Dave Winfield is dead to me to this day, the Minny-OSU brawl was nothing like this.

I'm not sure how cheating, point shaving or any of that other shit even compares to a university harboring a pedophile serial rapist, and completely turning a blind eye to it.

I'd take every one of the other ones in succession before I'd ever see another Sandusky.

Worse depends on how you rank it. Nothing I can think of is worse than raping kids. But the Black Sox scandal at the time had more influence, if nothing else because of the more innocent times and how it shook the whole country and the-then "National Pastime".

    Munich wasn't a scandal - it was a tragedy.

Scandals require cover-ups. In this instance, I think that this would be my order:

    1. Baylor Basketball Murder Cover-up.
    2. Rae Carrouth Kills his pregnant Baby's mama.
    3. Penn State Sexual Assault Cover-up.
    4. BALCO Labs sting.
    5. SMU Death Penalty.
