IIRC he was third for the Heisman in ‘69 and 5th in ‘70

Long story short he was the top option quarterback in the nation by a wide margin
Yes - when I was looking up his stats, I learned that he was 3rd in 1969, and 5th in 1970, to confirm your memory.

To be fair, since I posted his passing stats vs. Fields's, here are their rushing stats:

Also, to be fair to Kern, it should be pointed out that a big part of the option is reading the defense and knowing what to do with the ball. None of these stats show what was done on the plays when he pitched the ball or handed the ball off, based on the defense.

41 TDs 3 INTs is hilarious. I don't want to say I forgot how good he was, but 41:3 is just jarring to see in any football context. lol

And at the time of the Heisman voting, it was just 1 interception that year. 2 more were against Clemson after the Heisman voting. Imagine throwing just 1 interception and no one really gives you a chance to win the Heisman. Burrow was getting that Heisman and there really wasn't much discussion for anyone else.

Also, that one interception was a tipped pass against Michigan State. Hm. My memory was wrong - it was just a bad pass.

Go to about 6:33 into the video. 8:13 remaining in the 3rd quarter.

Like a lot of people have said... I can only judge the QB's that I have witnessed. I was born in '82 and really only started watching/following OSU and college football in general immediately following the 2002 National Title. Until then I was playing football on my own and was always busy on Saturdays.

That said, my Mt. Rushmore for buckeye QB's is as follows:

1: Braxton Miller (prior to injury)
2: J.T. Barrett (prior to injury)
3: C.J. Stroud
4: Dwayne Haskins
5: Troy Smith
6: Kenny Guiton
7: Terrelle Pryor
8: Herb Kirkstreet.

Justin Fields
Dwayne Haskins
CJ Stroud

Troy Smith
Braxton Miller
JT Barrett
Craig Krensel

Cardel Jones
Terrelle Pryor
Kyle McCord
Justin Zwick
Todd Boeckman
Joe Bauserman
Steve Bellisari

With the way offenses evolve, you almost have to break these kind of polls into different eras. Braxton Miller would have been a different QB playing for Cooper and Pryor might have been better in the Urban offense. Fields, Haskins and Stroud took advantage of Days' offenses. I just picked the QB since Jim Tressel.

The top three are so close. If Haskins stayed another year I think he would have been at the top. Fields overall body of work puts him on top of the list. CJ Stroud was great as well, but his inability to run and lack of big wins puts him at the bottom of the top three. I understand that team wins are just that, team accomplishments. Each of these QBs could have been higher if not for something out of their control. If Ohio State could have played defense against Purdue, Haskins goes to the playoffs. If Olave doesn’t break left during the final play against Clemson, Fields would have completed an epic comeback in the playoffs. If Ruggles makes the field goal, Stroud would have completed an epic comeback in the playoffs and Ohio State would have been National Champs.

In the second group, Miller and Barrett were good athletes in the perfect system to take advantage of their abilities. Troy Smith was a better overall QB who could use his running to avoid sacks, scramble and extend plays. Krensel was a better runner than people remember who could pick up a first down with his legs if needed.

Smith talks a lot of smack, but there are no teams interested in him coaching.

Johnny Depp was blackballed based on obviously false allegations. DOE is even more sensitive to this than Hollywood, as we saw with the band nonsense.

I don't think we can draw any conclusions about his coaching ability based on his career after the allegations.

We don’t know any of this…and no I assume Smith isn’t coaching because of the allegations against him. That said he seems to be doing better now that he’s out of his marriage. Maybe it wasn’t him? Who knows.

Any rate, I think many downplay the roll Smith had with that room. Can say what you want but Hartline took over a stacked room with multiple team captains (three!!!) and a crazy culture. He literally created the moniker of zone 6.
Teams, especially NFL teams, give not a shit about dildos and rough stuff with the wife or girlfriend. they’ll chase talent regardless. If Smith were a great coach, he wouldn’t be doing podcasts to make a living.

I disagree.

He was a good coach just not worth the hassle which I get.

I personally think he was underrated as a coach. Had some really good rooms despite not having a dynamic throw game
