Wireless, wireless, everywhere

Deety

Head Coach
Has anyone here looked into Verizon Wireless BroadbandAccess? The connection comes from any tower carrying the service. The list of cities involved looks pretty good (quite a bit of Ohio coverage, btw).

I just signed up, since I take my computer everywhere and it can be frustrating trying to find hotspots. 15 days to make sure it connects in all my usual haunts, or to see if there are any problems. So far, so good.

Anyone know of other companies offering this on a large scale? Anyone using this service now? If so, have you noticed any drawbacks compared to cable or dsl?

Verizon is the biggest so far. I am not a big believer that wireless will survive. Was actually just tellin grad the same thing a while back. I love the idea, but it just has too many restrictions, mainly line of sight. I think Satellite will eventually become more of a standard.........cause when you think about it, after putting up 30493040394304 towers, you might as well have just thrown a sattelite into space, or rented off someone who already has one up there.

Mind you I am just voicing an opinion, could be way off.

Fiber is actually the way of the future, it will replace DSL in a few years.

Yup, I'll be testing line-of-sight all week. If portability were not an issue, I'd probably have gone another route. Nice to be able to use the same service consistently - where it's available.

There was talk of a private company covering a large portion of this area with public internet accessibility (one fee, widespread coverage), but apparently the tax revenue and "public service" opportunities are going to prevent the project from being economically feasible.

Visitng the Romper Room?
No. I actually meants while using the bathroom for it's intended use. I usually read a college football magazine...but using the computer is good too. At least for me, it's impossible to just sit there and do nothing but use the bathroom. I gotta read something. If i'm in a public restroom I pull out my wallet and read the different cards i've got in it. I don't know why it's that way...but it is.

We are writing a small app for some of our customer's salesman to use this service with a TREO. The challenge is line of site as you mentioned.

I am with MAX on this one, satellite will eventually be the way to go. Fiber is nice but no one wants to rip and tear to get the infrastucture in place.

Hell I was drivin up through Wisconsin in June on my way to Canada. Had my laptop wedged between the 2 front seats watchin dvd's. Had forgot to disable my wireless connection, and right in the middle of some farm, it grabbed a signal
