Barry Alvarez, who established Wisconsin football as a Big Ten power in the 1990s and has served as full-time athletic director since 2006, is expected to announce soon that he is retiring.

Multiple sources told the Journal Sentinel that Alvarez, who turned 74 in December, will share his plan sometime in the next few weeks.

"He was very comfortable with the decision," a source said.

Chris McIntosh, UW’s deputy athletic director since July 2017, has been groomed to succeed Alvarez.

Speaking on Sunday’s edition of Late Kick, Pate picked Wisconsin as the most underrated team in the Big Ten.

“The reason it's weird is because we've got Wisconsin at No. 16,” Pate said. “How are you going to be uneducated if you're ranked No. 16? I think they're better than the 16th best team in the country...LSU, Cincinnati, Florida, Notre Dame, Oregon and Texas A&M. I can see Wisconsin being better than every single one of them, maybe they don't top any of them, but I see a path where Wisconsin is better than every single one of those teams.

“Paul Chryst, they really believe they have something offensively this year. I think they believed they had it last year and it got derailed. Last year they had that Friday night game against Illinois and they had that perfect half offensively. People didn't know what to think because you're used to Wisconsin’s offense being one thing and then you saw a radically different thing like the forward pass, a whole lot of it. But then, everything got thrown off the rails, through no fault of their own. They had a bunch of injuries at wide receiver, they had a bunch of COVID issues...they didn't really play a season. They played, but it wasn't the Wisconsin that they could've been. I think they believe they are going to have some delayed gratification this year and I agree with that.

“Wisconsin’s got a sneaky underrated wide receiver room, I think they have a sneaky underrated quarterback. A lot of those Badger fans, even when they had Jack Coan on campus, a lot of them whispered to each other, they never said it out loud but they whispered, ‘Graham Mertz may be better than that Jack Coan character Now you get to see him, you actually get to see him play Jack Coan this year too.”

Just sayin': Cheese has a front loaded schedule, 1st four games include Pedsters, ND, and scUM, etc....

How did they end up with Army right in the middle of the season?

I might have to head up to Madison for that shitshow.

Make sure you get plenty of quarters to stuff into your marshmallows.

Might want to work on rotator cuff strengthening exercises if you’re really into being prepared.

Or just get drunk and throw whatever the fuck if you are more into the local experience.

Oof. That'll fuck with your defense for a bit after.
Especially with Purdue right after.
If Army doesn't get too predictable with the option, and if they settle on a starter- Wisconsin could be in some trouble. They had SIX different starting quarterbacks (Christian Anderson, Jemel Jones, Tyhier Tyler, Cade Ballard, Maurice Bellan, and Tyson Riley) start a game.

The last couple years- Army has gotten WAY too vanilla with their offense. Seemed like every first down was a fullback dive, 2nd down was quarterback power or quarterback zone. Third down was more some midline option.
I'm guessing that they wanted a bye before the Notre Dame game so that was the available date for their 3rd non-conference game.

I guess.

It's Army's 6th game- @ Georgia State, Western Kentucky, UConn, Miami (Ohio), then @ Ball State. There is a bye week between the Ball State & Wisconsin games

5 Potentially Disappointing College Football Teams

Big Ten Potential Disappointment

Wisconsin Badgers

Okay, okay, okay … it’s sort of weird to be considered a potential disappointment while also appearing on the Teams That Will Rebound Big list.

That was about having the potential to turn things back around, and – if this makes any sense – this is about not 100% buying that everything will snap back as expected.

The 2020 Badgers came into the season with more than enough talent to win the Big Ten West. The defense was strong, the receiving corps appeared to be the best yet under head coach Paul Chryst, and there was a real, live, big-time quarterback about to take over.

Graham Mertz was brilliant in the opener against Illinois, tested positive for COVID-19, and the regular season wasn’t the same the rest of the way despite a 49-11 win over Michigan.

The receiving corps was hit with injuries, the offense went into the tank with a total collapse – Wisconsin scored a total of 20 points over three straight losses – and worst of all, the running game was nowhere to be found at times.

Can Jalen Berger really be the next great Badger back? Maybe, but is Mertz about to take a big step forward with all the great receivers back? It’s possible.

But like North Carolina in the ACC – and with a few of the other teams on this list – can the Badgers get to the conference title?

In non-conference play they have to deal with Notre Dame, and Big Ten showdowns against Penn State and Michigan won’t be easy. Watch out for the road trip at Purdue, and be careful of the home games against Iowa and Northwestern.

However, as long as the Badgers win in Camp Randall, there’s no excuse to not end up in Indianapolis in early December. And that’s where the potential disappointment comes in.

Anything other than a Big Ten Championship appearance won’t do. Throw in a possible loss to Notre Dame – or, heaven forbid, Army – and yet another year without a College Football Playoff appearance won’t be fun.

Keeping with the theme of title-game-or-bust …

Coaches poll puts Wisky at #15 and I have to tip my hat to the job they consistently do in Madison.

I like to look at recruiting rankings the way Scrooge McDuck likes to count his gold coins.

Wisconsin has recruited 14 four star athletes in the past 5 years. OSU has 14 four star Defensive Backs on the roster.

Wisconsin also has 2 five star athletes on the roster. OSU has 2 or more five stars at each of QB, WR, OL, DL and LB.

I believe it was the Marlyand coach who said playing OSU is like playing in a pick up game where one team gets the first 22 picks.

And yet Wisconsin will put a team on the field that can hold their own with anybody.

Well, almost anybody.

I listen to a podcast called Split Zone Duo where they talk about two different type of programs

Blue Chip Programs - self explanatory
Developmental programs - probably won't have a player contribute until late in their sophomore year or junior season. Uses the redshirt program to it's fullest extent and if they have players go to the NFL, they are almost always Seniors.

That's Wisconsin. I respect it their grind.
