Wisconsin loses a recruit due to message board?

Madison ? Think before you post that nasty comment on the Internet.
That was one of the messages Madison Memorial High School junior Vander Blue delivered Tuesday in discussing his decision to withdraw his non-binding, oral commitment to play basketball for Wisconsin.

Blue stressed he didn?t re-open his recruitment because of a published report in which a source raised potential academic obstacles or because some UW fans, after reading the report, used the Internet to criticize his intellect and work ethic.

I also believe many of the derogatory comments posted on fan boards bothered Blue, who is 16.

Listen to what he had to say.

?Just to see how these so-called Wisconsin fans, what they had to say on those blogs,? he said, ?it really made me second-guess: Do people really want me here?

?Because I know if I was a fan and I heard about a recruit I?d be more like: ?What can we do to help him?
?And not: ?Let?s make him feel like the worst person in Madison right now.?

Yet another example of the why the internet is the devil.

Honestly though, I am a little surprised it doesnt happen more often. Reading some of the Buckeye boards I scratch my head at some of the juvenile responses. It gets through the filters here sometimes. Though its caught and moved as quickly as possible. Its disheartening to the coaches to have to worry about I'm sure.

this is interesting. on one hand it validates what the mods work so hard to achieve around here. on the other, it makes you wonder how the young man would react to some criticism once he is on the team. i guess the problem is that there are always going to be assholes everywhere you go (especially in Madison).

I don't know how many times I have been involved in this debate about whether message boards can have an impact.

IMO the simple point is that if we ever cause a recruit to second guess we - who built a site in support of our team - have done more harm than we can ever make up for.
