WORKING Thread -- please stop in.

I'll post it here since the rep chart thread is closed. I agree with Mili that we need to cut the rep power...either that or limit the amount of rep people can give out daily. Way too much rep is handed out way too often. I'll admit that there are people on this site that should have way more rep than I have, simply because I've only been here this year, yet I am in the top 10. Granted I have posted a crap load this year so maybe it can be justified. I just notice some people have been here for 2-3 months and are on the tail of some longstanding members. Another idea I thought of would be if you rep someone in one of the sports forums it is worth 4%, while repping someone for an open discussion post be only 1%. I got my majority of rep there and I know a lot of other people are as well. This is an Ohio State athletics community first, then a mindless social one. Just an idea.

I agree, Golfer. As one of those posters who has been here only a couple months, I find it absurd that I'm in the top 25, especially given the fact that I've posted maybe half a dozen times in the football forum. I certainly enjoy reading the football and basketball forums, I just haven't felt like I've had anything to contribute that hadn't already been expressed, and I don't want to clutter up the main boards with meaningless drivel.

I think the suggestion to weigh the athletic discussion boards more heavily than the open forum is a good one. I enjoy the open forum. It makes boring work days pass more quickly and gives me another option of something to do on sleepless nights such as this one. I appreciate the fact that I've gotten a warm welcome and lots of rep points, but, really, for what? For insulting Vincent, ranting about religion, talking about blow jobs and sharing some things I find interesting or amusing? Perhaps those types of posts do deserve a nod of some sort, but they certainly don't contribute to this community in the way posts such as an insightful analysis of a game or research into the next recruiting class do, so they shouldn't be rewarded equally.

So, my impression is that rep has become basically worthless. But yeah, I'm just ranting now because I can't sleep... So there's my $0.02 worth.

Would it be hypocritical for me to rep you for that post?

Seriously though I'm glad you agree. I have probably spent about 4/5 of my posts in Open Discussion and get repped more often for cracking a joke than giving my 2 cents in say a basketball thread. It's just the way things work here. I just think that someone like 44820 should be ahead of someone who rarely hits up the sports threads

Rep isn't a quick fix, unfortunately. It's needed a serious overhaul for some time. At some stage we'll have the time and resources to reinvent it as a better tool, but for now, it's what we have.

If any PHP/mySQL proficient coder wants to step up and volunteer to take this project on in whole or in part, that would be great.

edit: simplifying post...

Roster drop-down menu above

Improvements.

#1) Add basketball rosters, with links in the menu drop-down

#2) On the roster pages (ie sortable roster, or depth chart)... link their names to the individual player's thread

I am willing to do the basketball roster, as a test before tackling the football roster. It could be created/tested by an average user like me, and then uploaded quickly by an admin, as to not pile more on Clarity's plate.

Feel free to leave feedback whether this seems like it might be useful or rather overkill...

I disagree b/c honestly, I come to BP only secondarily for football-sort of like you, I guess. If am looking to talk hoops, I always go to BN first. I go here to chat in the politics forum and the open discussion-which has taken a distrubing trend downward in intellgent posting lately-just polls and dumb stuff,IMO....your rep should come from wherever posters see fit to give it-probably 85% of mine has come from the poltics forum-that's where I hangout. This board has really become more than just a sports talk board, and that is great. Give everyone equal credit for their contribution, wherever it may be.
