WR Anthony Gonzalez (2005 All B1G, US Congressman)

October 19, 2007

Who's hot: Anthony Gonzalez

Position: Receiver.

College: Ohio State.

Experience: 1st year with Colts; 32nd overall pick in the April draft.
NFL resume: Has appeared in all five games, four off the bench. Made his first career start against Tampa Bay when injuries sidelined Marvin Harrison and Aaron Moorehead. Ranks fourth on the team with 13 receptions for 178 yards.
Recent impact: Responded to first career start by catching seven passes for 71 yards. . . . A natural slot receiver, he was moved out wide to compensate for the absence of Harrison and Moorehead.
On his first career start at a new position: "When you find out how many guys are scratched -- how many guys aren't playing -- you'd better get comfortable fast. It wasn't like they said, 'Hey, how do you feel this afternoon?' It was, 'These guys are down. You're playing out there.' I was like, 'OK, good.' I hadn't really practiced out there and taken too many snaps outside, really since high school. I didn't play outside very often at Ohio State. It was exciting, it really was.''

MORE AND MORE COMFORTABLE
By John Oehser - Colts.com
Rookie Wide Receiver Gonzalez Fitting into Colts, Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS - Every day, he is more comfortable.
As for Indianapolis, Anthony Gonzalez said he likes it these days, and that it feels more like a hometown by the week.

And as for his team . . .

Well, if Gonzalez ? a rookie wide receiver and the Colts' first-round selection in this past April?s NFL Draft ? wasn?t completely satisfied with his early progress, he said he likes the way he?s playing more with each passing practice and game.

All in all, Gonzalez said this week . . .

So far, so good.

?I?m not there yet,? Gonzalez said as the AFC South-leading Colts (5-0) prepared to play the Jacksonville Jaguars (4-1) in a crucial early-season division game at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium Monday at 8:30 p.m.

?I?m not entirely there, but I am getting more and more comfortable.?

He got in late but didn't get any action? I don't know how he can be the leading reciever against Tampa and all the sudden he's not on the field? Yes Harrison is back, and they have Wayne starting, they have dallas clarke also, but I don't understand whyt hey put moorehead ahead of him? I saw anthony huddled near Payton though at the end going over the pictures from his past offensive series! Thats a very good sign

Gonzalez ready for anything

Wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez will be certain of one thing when the Colts offense takes the field today at Carolina's Bank of America Stadium: Nothing is for certain.
"You don't go into a game expecting not to get any catches," the Colts' first-round draft pick said, "but if it so happens at the end of the game you haven't seen the ball, it's not that surprising.
"I was told from the first day I got here that that's how it would be."
Busy one game. Not so busy the next.
Three weeks ago against Tampa Bay when eight-time Pro Bowler Marvin Harrison was out with a bruised knee and his backup, Moorehead, was sidelined with back spasms, Gonzalez played extensively. Eight of Manning's 37 passes were directed at him, and he caught a career-high seven for 71 yards. Monday night at Jacksonville, Gonzalez played sparingly. Not one pass was intended for him.
Gonzalez's opportunities today should be on the upswing. Once again, Harrison will not play. If Moorehead's back allows, he probably will join Reggie Wayne in the starting lineup. Gonzalez's role would be as the third receiver.

ESPN's John Clayton is reporting that Gonzalez could miss a couple of weeks following his left thumb dislocation. This is not a surprise as Gonzalez no doubt has swelling and stiffness at this point that render his thumb relatively useless. The more interesting piece will be seeing how he fares once that swelling subsides and whether he has residual instability in his thumb that affects his ability to grip the ball.
