In between those two runs, Massillon was able to retake the lead when Kyle Kempt hit Justin Olack down the right sideline for a 55-yard touchdown with 3:16 left to momentarily give the Tigers a 24-21 lead. That was one of two touchdown passes for Kempt, who also hit Devin Smith for a 69-yard touchdown in the first quarter that gave Massillon an early 7-0 lead.

5 catches for 100 yards and a TD...also completed one pass for 21 yards...

Tigers bring fresh attitude to court - The Independent

Massillon's Devin Smith dunks during practice on Wednesday afternoon.

The Tigers have gotten a boost from the presence at practice of Devin Smith and Clayton Mattox, two players Creamer admits he hadn't counted on having available this early in the preseason due to their football obligations. However, with the Massillon football team losing in the first round of the playoffs earlier this month, that opened the door for both to miss only minimal time on the basketball floor.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Massillon's Smith handles target well

Massillon senior receiver Devin Smith, left, and Perry coach Keith Boedicker were chosen as The Independent's Player and Coach of the Year.

MASSILLON, OH ?

Devin Smith admits the No. 9 on his Massillon football jersey may as well have been a bull?s-eye at times during his recently-concluded senior season.

?I had a big target on my back with me committing to Ohio State and all those guys wanting to get after us and beat us,? Smith said this week. ?When you?re at Massillon, you?re going to get the best competition all over Ohio. I thought it was a big target on my back for guys wanting to get after me.?

Of course, it?s one thing for a player to have a target on his back. It?s a completely different thing for the opposition to be able to actually hit that target.

In Smith?s case, it was more often than not that the opponents weren?t able to hit the target. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound wide receiver improved on his stellar first season at Massillon in 2009 with an even better one in 2010, and that is why he was chosen as The Independent?s football Player of the Year.

Smith caught 60 passes for 1,130 yards with nine touchdowns for the 7-4 Tigers. The receptions and yards both are second-most for a single season in Massillon history, behind Devin Jordan?s record 98-catch, 1,492-yard effort in 2001.

Those numbers come on the heels of Smith?s junior season ? his first as a Tiger after transferring in from Ellet ? where he caught 50 passes for 989 yards with 15 touchdowns in 14 games. Smith leaves Massillon with 110 catches for 2,119 yards and 24 touchdowns, all of which are second all-time behind Jordan.

Like Jordan, who graduated in 2003, Smith will be heading to Ohio State after his Tiger career is over.

?I think my first year at Massillon, I don?t think guys knew who I was and what I could do,? Smith said. ?When I showed them what I could do last year, they knew they had a player to play against. I was a big target for a lot of teams we played this year. It just (stinks) that it?s all over.?

Tigers hoping to put down seasons in past

Smith, though, may be one of the biggest keys to Massillon's success this season. The 6-foot-2 senior is the top returning scorer for the Tigers, having averaged 12.2 points a game last season, his first at Massillon.

The biggest thing for Smith has been his health. His junior season was marred by injuries, both suffered during the Tigers' run to the 2009 state football semifinals, and those suffered during the basketball season.

That hasn't been the case thus far for Smith this season.

"When Devin came (out last year), he was injured," Creamer said. "He's slowed by a long season of bumps and bruises. He goes three or four games into the season, and then he gets a stress fracture in his foot.

"He looked better on the first night of practice for him than at any time last year because he has just got quicker, bigger, stronger. I talked to him, and he's like, 'Yeah coach, I'm healthy.' His legs are healthy and he's ready to go. Knock on wood, that's one of the things that's been an added plus."

. . .
That?s exactly what Hoover got, burning off an 11-2 run to grab a 34-30 lead. After Massillon senior Devin Smith?s breakaway dunk made it 35-34 Tigers with 4:35 to play in the third, Hoover regained the lead. Massillon didn?t threaten again.

SMITH LOOKING TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF EARLY OPPORTUNITIES AT OSU

By Lee Hudnell at 2:59 PM

Devin Smith MASSILLON ? With the loss of Dane Sanzenbacher to graduation, and the upcoming suspension of senior-to-be, DeVier Posey, Ohio State seems to have a few openings at the wide receiver position going into the 2011 college football season.

One player in particular, Massillon (OH) Washington High School and class of 2011 commit, Devin Smith, is ready for the opportunity to show the coaches in Columbus that he has the skills to make an immediate impact.

The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Smith ? a 2010 Division I first team all-Ohio wide receiver ? said that he must take advantage of his opportunities as soon as he hits the field in Columbus this summer.

"I feel I could go in as a freshman and get some time and help OSU in any way possible," Smith told The Buckeye Times on Wednesday. "I feel that if I show the coaches I can play at the next level I think it will help me with playing time."
