WR Johnnie Dixon (New Orleans Breakers - USFL)

Football: Johnnie Dixon’s career has been defined by injuries. Against Penn State, it turned out differently.

Johnnie Dixon sat on the turf with his legs out in front of him. A voice came on in the press box and mentioned the word injury.

Oh no. Not again. Not Dixon. Not now.

Entering the season, Dixon, a redshirt junior, was best known as Ohio State’s wide receiver whose knees were determined to leave his potential untapped.

So, as Dixon sat there on the turf early in the fourth quarter against No. 6 Penn State, before the Buckeyes’ eventual comeback seemed attainable, it was easy for the minds of 109,302 people in the stands and the players and coaches on the sidelines to recall Dixon’s battles with knee tendinitis and arthritis.

It turns out, this time it was only leg cramps, which Dixon said are “the worst.”

And it turns out, Ohio State got lucky it was nothing more.

Dixon would return to the field and make two catches, both for touchdowns, that were critical in the No. 6 Buckeyes’ 39-38 come-from-behind win against the No. 2 Nittany Lions.

“I was very emotional when I made those catches,” Dixon said. “It’s just crazy the feelings that were going through my mind knowing that we needed a play, and we always tell each other that it’s going to be on us, on [the wide receivers], to make a play which we did.”

All he does is catch TD passes.

6 of Johnnie's 13 catches this year have gone for 6 points. That's scoring at better percentage than Devin Smith during his 2014 season. Of course, Johnnie has to pick up the pace to match Smith's 33 receptions, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

A lot of Smith's TDs were close to or in the endzone, Dixon made plays when the ball was in his hands then scored which is very impressive in itself.

Johnnie Dixon Persevered to Buckeyes’ Benefit

Imagine this Ohio State team without wide receiver Johnnie Dixon on the roster, because it almost happened.

Prior to this year, Dixon’s career has been one defined by injuries. Chronic arthritis in his knees kept him from playing a full season in any of his first three years as a Buckeye, limiting him to just 13 games total in that span.

That’s three years of terribly hard work, met with three consecutive years of having his season shut down much too early.

That can wear on a player, and it absolutely wore on Dixon. After the Clemson loss last year, he was on the verge of giving up the game — and maybe had even already made the decision to walk away.

Buoyed and encouraged by his wide receiver teammates — particularly best friend Parris Campbell, Dixon decided that he couldn’t leave just yet.

Spring was met with cautiously optimistic reports to the media from coaches. Dixon was running well and pain free. They still watched him closely, however.

Then came fall camp. The same explosion was seen every day. Dixon was a new man, and finally he was once again part of the Buckeyes’ plans.

Very Shakesperarian...having that much talent and drive and a condition that caps it in such a gut-wrenching way. Hats off to him for continuing to work and fight through it knowing the limits it presents. Can't think of the last Buckeye I was so happy to see have success.

He is a great story! But with those knees I want him to get paid and bolt for NFL. Screw continuing to play for free on 75 year old knees

I gotta say it, pnuts...you got a point! Just didn't know if his resume was strong enough, but that said, a few more games like he's had and a good combine should do it.
In any event, good luck, Johnnie, and may you always have the best......you've earned it! :urban2:

His resume is strong enough if he makes it through the season healthy, IMO. I'm not saying he'll be a high draft pick(5th round highest, best chance as a UDFA), but enough to earn himself a paycheck. His numbers are comparable to Noah Brown's already, and there are 2 regular season games left(Noah went in the 7th round).
Best of luck as well, with whatever decision he makes.
