WR Ray Small (official thread)

Lets hope it is not the swine flu.

During my first week of it, I realized I simply wasn't going to "work from home", as I was waking up after 3:00 pm. During my second week of it, I was down to only requiring 12 hours of sleep a day, but was winded going up and down the stairs. It took nearly 3 weeks to feel better, let alone needing to scrape the rust off of skills, get back into shape, etc., as Ray would.

Whatever it is, get better Ray!

I agree. It has to be TWash. No way Tress drops Carter. Despite being a true freshman Duron looked like the most polished wide receiver against Navy. I hope Ray is healthy. I would love to see him play against USC the way he played in the Spring game.

Will Small feats help the Buckeyes?

Say what you will about Ray Small, but Ohio State coach Jim Tressel has dealt with many ups and downs off the field with the wide receiver over the years primarily because of one reason: When he's right, when he's not in the dog house, when his head is in the game, Small is a talent who can help a team in a game like Saturday night's colossal match with Southern California.
The problem is, Small hasn't had enough consecutive games in the good graces of Tressel to make the impact many forecast when they referred to him as the next Ted Ginn Jr. coming out of Cleveland Glenville High School four years ago. For example, just when he'd regained the coaches' favor last week after being denied entry to preseason camp for five days, he fell ill on Friday and missed the season-opening game against Navy.
As Tressel indicated today, and as sources had said before the opener, Small had done the work necessary in practice to re-establish himself in the top four of receivers going into Navy. Whether he should have been top three is up to conjecture; there was no doubt that freshman Duron Carter had a great preseason camp.
Now Small is poised to play again. Tressel said he's the No.4 receiver, and he's listed as the No.2 punt returner on this week's depth chart behind last week's regular Dane Sanzenbacher. But Sanzenbacher said on Tuesday that Small likely will get the nod if he is feeling 100 percent at game time.
Which just goes to show that even his fellow players know the talent Small could bring to bear if he keeps his act together on and off the field. And remember, on that otherwise forgettable night for the Buckeyes in the 35-3 loss to USC in the L.A. Coliseum a year ago, Small led the team with six catches for a mere 30 yards. He was a move or two away from making something bigger out of a few of those.

Even though Small didn't any touch on offense, you could tell a difference from the way that he's fielding punts this year from last year. The level of concentration has gone way up and he is doing his part to be a playmaker for his team. Great to have both him and Rose back in the fold.

Small did a great job catching all thoses punts.

Seriously, he was able to run at full speed and catch the ball in stride then get a few yards after that. That's all you ask for against a good USC punt coverage team.

Still, I kept thinkin he was gonna break one for a big gain, which would have been HUGE.

Ohio State receiver Ray Small

Small?s grade is always changing in a career that has constantly seen him move in and out of Jim Tressel?s doghouse. Saturday, the Cleveland native was really involved in the offense for the first time this season as the No. 4 receiver, catching two passes for 47 yards.

?I was real surprised. But I was ready for it at the same time,? Small said. ?To be still here at Ohio State is a big thing for me, and for me to be playing is even better. It was a beautiful thing. If I wouldn?t have played, I probably would have been a little upset, but that?s just how things go. We?ve got a great receiving corps, so whoever?s out there is the best.?

Small missed the start of preseason camp while getting summer school grades sorted out, after being suspended for two games last season.

?I?m getting older and me and Coach Tressel talked a lot about that situation and basically we?re working on it,? Small said. ?I?m going to go out and practice hard and do what I have to do.?

But he missed the Navy opener with what he and Tressel said was an illness, though Small knows some people thought it was another episode in his football drama.

?Yeah, but there?s nothing I could have done about it. I got a little name out there or whatever, but I try not to listen to that,? Small said. ?I try to let it go in one ear and out the other, because I know what?s going on with Ray Small. Nobody else does.?

And if he?s playing, and contributing, then things must be OK, at least for now.

?It?s all the proof you need, man,? Small said. ?Because if I was such a bad person, I wouldn?t be at Ohio State.?
