Lakeland's Ricquan Southward Picks Up 2 Offers

October 29th, 2011 02:01am
by Solange Reyner

Lakeland senior receiver Ricquan Southward picked up two Division I football offers Thursday, coach Will Bahler told the Ledger Friday evening.

Southward, who has 669 yards receiving with six touchdowns through eight games this season, was offered scholarships by Mississippi and Ohio State. He's only a first year starter at receiver, but he's made an impact quickly for the Dreadnaughts - against Hialeah on Oct. 14, he broke the school record in receptions (12) and yards receiving (238).

Not a whole lot of info at this point...confusing offer/timing to say the least but maybe the staff, and in particular Coach Drayton, felt this was the kind of kid OSU couldn't pass on...

Seems like an odd time to offer another WR.

I can't imagine the Buckeyes would take Epitropoulos, Lewis, Thomas, Stanford and now Southward in the same class.

Five WRs seems like a bit much to me, unless the staff isn't feeling so hot about Stanford or are expecting Epitropoulos to play on defense... or both.

Or perhaps its the staff subtly putting some pressure on Stanford to lock his spot up in the class... who knows.

Considering the fact that we have a grand total of 1 kid committed to us from outside the state (which would have been zero until yesterday), I have a feeling this has more to do with getting Stanford on board.

I think Stanford is in the fold either way. Maybe the staff is thinking if they stay in place that they wanna move to a wide open spread offense. Also, Epo could play safety. He looked very good on film on D. IDK, it is a confusing offer nonetheless.

Edit: found a few clips staring at 11:48.

Looks pretty good IMO. Quick feet, and runs angry for a WR.

He gets up in the air nicely on the fade routes. Plays like a bigger receiver than his height. If we get both Southward and Stanford, it's possible that one (or both) would redshirt to spread out the WR classes a bit.

Rivals $ - Southward a sleeper no more

11/2

By Nee...OSU was his first offer and says he was both excited and nervous talking to LF...also hearing from Miami, Florida, Florida State, Marshall, Maryland, Mississippi State, Temple and Texas Tech...will take an official to OSU after his season.
