Annual FCA fundraiser to feature former OSU, NFL player and OSU Alumni Band
Mar. 14, 2013

LANCASTER ? A former Ohio State football player will talk about the importance of giving back to others during an upcoming fundraiser to support Fairfield Christian Academy?s athletic program.

Roy Hall will join the Ohio State University Alumni Band on March 22 at Fairfield Christian Academy for the school?s annual Knight of Excellence fundraiser. The public is invited to attend the event, which features a spaghetti dinner, music, Hall?s speech, a silent auction and a living statue presentation by mime Mark Abbati.

Pete Kandra, vice president of the FCA athletic boosters, said Hall will talk about the work he has done through the DRIVEN Foundation, which Hall founded in 2008. The foundation works to empower underserved communities and help them recognize their potential through programs and community events.

?With us being a Christian school, we wanted to have someone who has a faith-based message,? Kandra said. ?We want (the student athletes) to understand that God is real in their life and that living this life of faith is not something to be ashamed of, so we try to bring in someone with that same experience and message.?

Hall, a native of Cleveland, had a difficult childhood; his father was abusive and addicted to drugs and his mother struggled financially to raise her children after she and Hall?s father separated, according to Hall?s biography on the DRIVEN website.

Hall earned first team All-Ohio honors for football and basketball while he was in high school and was awarded a full athletic scholarship to Ohio State. During his collegiate athletic career, Hall had two national championship appearances, including winning the 2002 national title, and was a five-time Ohio State Scholar Athlete Award winner. He obtained a degree from the Fisher College of Business.

In his professional athletic career, Hall played three seasons for or the Indianapolis Colts before signing with the Detroit Lions in 2010. His professional football career ended because of an injury.

Kandra said he thinks Hall?s story and his work with DRIVEN will tie in well with FCA?s program.

?We always have a ?twist? with Ohio State ? it?s a good draw,? he said.

Former Buckeyes Take On Union County
Posted Apr 10th, 2013

Roy Hall?s formula for success is pretty simple: find something or someone bigger than yourself as motivation.

Hall, a former Ohio State Buckeye and NFL football player who now operates the nonprofit DRIVEN Foundation, knows a thing or two about success. A standout high school athlete, Hall earned a full athletic scholarship to Ohio State, where he was also a five-time Scholar Athlete Award recipient. He was a member of the 2002 national championship team and also played in the 2006 championship game for the Buckeyes. Hall realized his ultimate dream when he was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in 2007.

But success wasn?t something that just landed in Hall?s lap. Achieving his dreams meant working hard and staying determined through some very difficult circumstances. As a child, Hall?s father struggled with heroin addiction, and eventually left his mother to raise their two children alone. The family faced tremendous financial burdens, but, time after time, Hall saw his mother put her needs second so that her children could succeed.

?There were times,? Hall said, ?that my mom did not eat, so that my sister and I could.? He recalls several instances when, though she needed new clothes for work, she did not buy them and instead made sure that he and his sister had new clothes for school. Her sacrifices showed him the fundamental integrity in putting someone else?s needs first.

The crowd falls silent

Players lucky and talented enough to make it to the NFL enjoy money, fame and the glory of the game they?ve loved their entire lives. But that dream ends abruptly and, for most players, against their will. What happens when the only job on your resume is one you can?t do anymore?

Roy Hall is a nice guy. You can hear it in his voice, warm and steady with carefully chosen words punctuated with conviction. He uses your name, but not in the phony way a bad used-car salesman does. He wants you to know he is acutely aware of who he is talking to. His eyes meet yours as he talks, using long-fingered hands that were no doubt useful for clutching a football.

Today he?s grasping an iPad, 2005 and 2006 Big Ten Championship rings on his fingers, his wrists cuffed by a purple shirt peeking out from under gray suit- jacket sleeves. On one, an embroidered ?R? and ?W? flank a larger ?H? in dark purple block letters. Going from good to great is all in the details, he?ll say.

He?s the kind of guy who?s always 10 minutes early. Who organizes his sock drawer and color codes his closet?a perfectionist who once kept a log of what he wore so as not to repeat outfits too frequently.

?I?m not that bad anymore,? says the former Ohio State wide receiver with a chuckle, a push of air through the white teeth of his smile. Genuine. Modest. This is who he is, friends say. What you see is what you get.

HALL

Charity game Jan. 25 to feature OSU players at WL-Salem

The desire to help his mother has driven Roy Hall to pursue lofty education, athletic and philanthropy goals.

“My father was a heroin addict,” the former Ohio State University and pro football player told Bellefontaine Rotarians on Monday, adding “he loved it (heroin) more than he loved us.”

Mr. Hall’s dad was also physically abusive, which led his young son to vow to help his family.

The 4.0 GPA student decided to pursue academic scholarships in case he couldn’t be a college athlete.

While at OSU, Hall was tutored and mentored by former coach Jim Tressel, whose influence has had a lasting impact.

Hall said Tressel taught him what it means to be a player off the field.

In 2008, Hall and former OSU teammate Antonio Smith founded the Columbus-based non-profit DRIVEN Foundation.

DRIVEN has provided 350,000 pounds of free food to some 3,500 central Ohio families, Mr. Hall said.

Additionally, the group distributes free school supplies and offers football camps and motivational speaking. It also partners with other organizations for various fundraising events.
