WR Ted Ginn, Jr. (Official Thread)

that's bull. He's not a good route runner, but that's not the problem.

4) Teddy Ginn is given HORRENDOUS routes to run. Most of the time this season he has been running 5 yard out routes to free up Holmes. It is painfully obvious that we aren't looking to pass the ball to him on those plays. We haven't seen slants. We haven't seen rollout plays with him coming across the middle. We've seen the same route over and over and over on most plays. I'm sure there were some non 5-yard out routes run by teddy, but the fact that I have been lulled to sleep by a useless route run by one of the most dangerous open field players in the game, is awful.

6) Ginn has never seen the ball as a WR, and its frustrating him. He's seen teh ball on screens, annoyingly predictable sweeps & reverses, and on returns. Maybe I'm forgetting one pass, but the only time I remember him getting the ball beyond 10 yards was by our 3rd string QB. After the two drops in the texas game, they didn't try to get it to him (maybe rightfully so, who knows). Since then, he has been a decoy. That has to wear on you when you know what you can do with the ball in space. The few passes he has seen have often been poor passes by Smith.

You pretty much summed up my post in the "How to Fix it" thread.

Is it possible that he might have some lingering injuries? I mean, I watch him, he doesn't seem that fast anymore, seems tentative in cuts as if something might give way...

The reason he doesn't seem as fast is because he isn't getting to full speed, he's dancing around too much trying to make every play a homerun. I said this in another thread...last year he was just going out there, taking the ball, and fucking running. This year, under immense pressure, and huge expectations on a gigantic stage, he's thinking to much. Like Mili said, he needs to get it in his head to just fucking run.

Reminds me of Lydell Ross. Very good freshman year and did not have much "coaching" at the time. After some time in the system and some "coaching" he was never the same.

TGII, last year, looked great. Now that he has been "coached" more, he reminds me of Lydell Ross and Danny Terrio.

What I would like someone to explain is when Teddy has ever danced when he could have headed up field. B/c I'm not sure there was a time, or at least not very many. I said it elsewhere, but he has danced when he should just go down and accept no additional yards.

The only times I can remember him having space: Miami screen, Iowa PR, Texas KR.

I may be forgetting some plays. But are you mad that he's not using space that's available? Or are you just pissed that he's dancing and losing additional yardage? B/c to the me it always seems to be the latter, not the former.

Mostly the latter but I recall (not the specific games) a very few times (two?) where there appeared to be opportunity after passing the wedge where if he had simply kept running for the corner he could have made more yardage. Instead he cut back and was tackled.

All I can add to this discussion is I can't count how many times I have, after Teddy has returned a punt or a kickoff, WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING? JUST RUN!!! Anyone notice that no one is kicking the ball away from Ginn anymore? I would rather see Santonio back there by himself at this point. Even in the Texas game, most people put the blame on Smith, Zwick or Hamby for the loss. If Ginn just goes full speed on the one kick return he scores with ease. Instead he gets to the last guy with a chance at him and tries to juke him and gets tackled. (I am not saying it is his fault we lost, but he cost us points.)

The cutbacks and juking worked last year because defenses weren't as prepared. The defenses we are playing are being disciplined and stopping him. He just needs to run and things will happen for him. He hasn't been given many chances untill last week and I know he didn't do much with them but I think benching him is extreme. He is still a player he just needs to be decisive and get better blocking on returns. He at least had somewhere to go last year this year the blocking is atrocious and no one would get much and that is a rarity at OSU. Regardless though he needs to run and get what he can even if his team can't block for him.

i dont think ginn is afraid at all IMO. i think he knows he is a small mofo and what he is trying to do is what worked semi successful last year and that was using his speed to the outside last year and that will only go so far because good opponents and opponents with fundamentals will eliminate that possibilities so he needs to get up field more. the kid isnt afraid otherwise he wouldnt of been recruited as the #1 CB prospect in the country. i saw him at glenville on plenty of occasions laying the wood so im not seeing how he is afraid of any type of impact. i really dont see why we are talking about ginn anyways. its not his fault. should be bench holmes, gonzalez, and hall because their numbers are bad as well? the problem is within the system itself and the ability to get the ball to all of our recievers.

Do you think JT should sit him down for either offense or special teams and tell him that if he plays fundamental football and works hard that he could be put back on the other, but if not then he will have to wait until next year? It is a little extreme, but maybe he just needs to focus on one aspect of the game.

Definitely not sitting him on offense. His helmet is filled with stickers for his blocks, if I had to guess. Watch the Holmes big gainer against Iowa. He got downfield, affected one pursuing defender (who slowed and was leveled by another lbocker) and then had a huge block downfield that sprung Holmes for another 10-15 yards.

Maybe we ought to take a little pressure off of the return game and try blocking a punt for once. PSU's punter was having difficulty handling the snap and was taking forever to get it off. We almost blocked it without even having a block on.

Take TG out and leave Santonio by himself and have Hall go after the block.

There must have been every Buckeye watching the game on TV yelling "Just fucking run"..............

Guys there's nothing wrong with his speed. I watched his speed on that punt return that called back against Iowa and speed isn't the issue. Last year we watched in amazement as Ted Ginn flashed onto the scene and could make the first man miss and then take himself through an impossible seem to find the endzone. Ginn is not the great unknown punt returner anymore, he is keyed by kickoff teams as dangerous so they don't want to let him take it too the house. What I have seen out of kickoff returns by Holmes and Ginn this year especially in the Texas game is that Texas was giving Osu some yards but not letting either take it to the house. Teams are conceding yards to prevent TDs and whenever Ginn gets the ball on D the defenses aren't overpursuing anymore, they are umbrellaing him (miami) and taking away the cut backs. He is playing scared or not to get hurt not driving up field and exposing seams like his PSU and Wisky returns last year. Whatever it is he's doing wrong we need to get it fixed right away.

Ok, so Ginn is definitely playing as well as he did last year, but of course he wasn't the target he was then like he is now, so he needs to rise to the occasion, which he hasn't done. He has, like many of you have stated, stopped running north and south. His routes are definitely shakey, just watch the film. I don't think it's an effort thing, he just needs to do what he used to do and go back to the fundamentals. Use that speed to his advantage. Hell, run streaks and pray Troy can hit him in the hands
