WR Ted Ginn, Jr. (Official Thread)

Ted Ginn: He is working at split end, behind Crabtree. He also lined up with the first unit in three-WR sets. Ginn had a couple drops on the first day of practice, but was one of the most active receivers over the course of the week with a lot of action and about eight receptions. He also worked on punt returns. Like everyone else, he struggled judging and latching onto the wind-blown punts out of the machine.

Ginn is in good hands with Davis

When Ted Ginn was having trouble holding onto the ball last month, whom did he seek out for advice? Answer: Vernon Davis. (I'll give you a moment to recover and climb back into your chair). It's true. According to Davis, Ginn asked the tight end how he was able to improve his hands. Davis was happy to assist. "I told him to make sure he gets on the JUGS (machine), catch the ball with one hand every day and just catch the ball consistently throughout practice," Davis said. "When he's waiting on the sideline, during special teams drills, all the time - before practice, after practice, in between."

All kidding aside, Davis is indeed the perfect mentor for Ginn, who developed a bad case of the dropsies in Miami and never shook that reputation. Is Davis a great pass catcher? No. Is he a natural pass catcher? No. But he's infinitely better at it now than he was when he arrived in the NFL in 2006. And more to the point, he's worked diligently to improve.

Ginn said he?s still learning the ropes now that he?s playing for a NFC West team.

?The only thing you can do is go out and work as hard as you can and let everything else come to you,? said Ginn who grew up in Cleveland and was a three-year letterman for Ohio State.

With Michael Crabtree holding the role of the Niners? top receiver, Ginn was asked where he is on the team?s depth chart.

?I don?t know, I don?t know,? Ginn replied.

Ginn wasn?t the only former Buckeyes receiver traded for a fifth-round pick this spring. The Steelers traded Santonio Holmes to the Jets right before Holmes? four-game suspension for substance abuse was announced.

?It?s no surprise because when you are playing in this league ... you?ve always got to be ready to go somewhere else,? Ginn said of the trades. ?It might not be to your liking, it might be to your liking. The only thing you can do is be ready to take that next step.?

Ginn said he had little reaction to the Big Ten adding Nebraska. Boone, however, ?said he?s ?interested to see what is going to happen. I think they do need to put a championship game in there because I?ve been in there where there has been a three-way tie for first.

Ted Ginn Jr. Visits Valley - 06/22/2010

Story.jpg

As the USA Today "Defensive Player of the Year" in high school, to an All-American at Ohio State, to his latest honor of being named AFC Special Teams Player of Month in November with the Miami Dolphins, Ted Ginn, Jr. has certainly left his mark through the football ranks.

"You play football," Ginn tells My Valley Sports. "I just go out everyday and try to do my best. If you practice hard, the games should be easy."

Ginn paid a visit to the Mahoning Valley on Monday night with a number of his fellow 49ers teammates and team personel. They were at Leo's Ristorante for the Edward J. DeBartolo Memorial Scholarship Foundation's annual fundraiser.

Ginn was traded to the San Francisco 49ers during the offseason after three seasons with the Dolphins, during which he racked up over 3,600 return yards and 10 total touchdowns.

"Getting Ted Ginn was really the first step that we needed to take in terms of helping us on special teams," says Niners head coach Mike Singletary. "We didn't just bring him here for special teams or be a punt returner or kickoff return guy. We want him to be an intregal part of what we're doing as a football team. And I think Ted Ginn can play a huge part in that."

And though he's moved over 2,300 miles away to the West Coast, he hasn't forgotten about his beloved Buckeyes.

"It's always good to be able to come home and breathe Ohio air. It's still my country, still my nation, Buckeye Nation. Now it's San Francisco Nation."

Ted Ginn Progressing To Be More Than Just A Special Teams Returner
By Samuel Lam - Contributor

The 49ers have been looking for help in a punt returner for this upcoming season. The team traded for wide receiver Ted Ginn with him being the answer in mind. But by watching him perform during this off-season, there could be more than just a solid return game the 49ers are getting in Ginn.

On Monday, Ginn's route running looked very crisp and his cuts on curls to make catches impressed his coaches. Quarterback Alex Smith used Ginn as the team's deep threat twice during practice and there's a confidence in the potential that Ginn brings to the offense.

"I think it is important, developing that timing and kind of finding that role where he?s going to come in and what he?s going to be doing," Smith said of his connection with Ginn on deep passes. "I think it?s something we have to have, absolutely, especially to stretch teams vertically. I think he?s a guy that can do that coming in and really take the top off."

The wideout has been busy the entire off-season. Ginn became a father of twins this summer and had remained in the Bay Area most of the time after OTAs, working out with teammates at team headquarters and building a connection with Smith. Ginn said that the playbook he had in his first year in the league is the same one the 49ers currently run; helping him ease in with his new team's offense.

"Having OTAs and throughout the off-season working out with Alex, and getting that wisdom that he has, I'm (feeling) good," Ginn said of his thoughts on his development in the offense. "There are some new things in there (the playbook), but that goes with the game. I just get better every day."

Ted Ginn Jr. has the speed to stretch defenses, but can he become a consistent threat?

-- Run, Ted Ginn Jr., run, straight down the sideline for a go-deep grab.

Reach, Ginn, reach, behind your stride for a deep catch on a post.

Race, Ginn, race, off the practice field, to the car and to a local hospital to sign the birth certificates of your newborn twins.

If Ginn is as productive during the season as he was in doing all of the above during training camp Tuesday, the 49ers' passing game might go somewhere yet.

"I'm always taught to go one speed," Ginn said. "Run my route as fast as possible. You just try to play as fast as you can and have fun while you're doing it."

Niners newcomer Ginn looking like good catch
Posted Aug. 06, 2010
By Dan Arkush

It was widely assumed that Ted Ginn Jr. was obtained from Miami primarily to upgrade the Niners' woeful kick-return game. But almost a week into training camp, there was a lot more attention being paid to Ginn's work as a receiver, which camp observers agree has been very impressive. "He might have had a down year in '09, but he has played well," said one observer. "He gets deep pretty easily, and I've only seen one drop. He had a rap for being easily intimidated, but there was this one play where he was racing downfield, and he got stonewalled by Isaac Sopoaga. He shot right back up. If he can be the first deep threat (for the Niners) since Terrell Owens, he could open up routes and make a huge impact." And as a kick returner? "For now, it just looks like he's just in the mix with guys like Kyle Williams and LeRoy Vann," the observer said. "They've been much more concerned about his receiving."

Ted Ginn Jr. in the Hall of Fame? Yes, Dolfans, it's true

The display at the Pro Football Hall of Fame showing the jerseys of Ted Ginn Jr. and Jason Taylor.

CANTON, OHIO ? Ted Ginn Jr. is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. For those who don't find the reasons self-evident, perhaps an explanation will help.

The Hall of Fame has a "Pro Football Today" room to honor recent outstanding performances. Ginn qualified with two touchdown returns of triple-digit yards against the New York Jets last season.

This explains why Dolphins fans visiting the Hall turn a corner and see Jason Taylor's aqua 99 jersey - no surprise - inside a glass case next to an aqua No. 19. The natural reaction might be to wonder if it is Brandon Marshall's jersey, but the name on the back says GINN.

Ginn was the No. 9 draft pick in 2007 who caught only flak in Miami before being traded to San Francisco for a fifth-rounder in the off-season.

A card inside the case says, "Ted Ginn of the Miami Dolphins made history during his team's win over the New York Jets on Nov. 1, 2009. That day, he returned kickoffs 100 and 101 yards for touchdowns to become the first player in NFL history ever to have two kickoffs of 100 or more yards in the same game. This is the jersey and shoes he wore that day."

49ers counting on Ted Ginn Jr. to help return game

Santa Clara, Calif. (AP) --

Ted Ginn Jr. might get to do the very job he's wanted all along in his first season for San Francisco: double duty.

The versatile Ginn appears to be in good position to earn a spot as the No. 3 receiver behind starters Michael Crabtree and Josh Morgan. Ginn also will be called upon in the return game for the 49ers, a special teams area that was among the worst in the NFL last season. He could even be returning both kickoffs and punts.

Upgrading the return game has been among coach Mike Singletary's top priorities heading into 2010.

"I just go out and I do what I do best. I love the game and I've been playing the game for a while," Ginn said Thursday. "I've always been that guy who contributes, in any way and every way. That's what I want to do."
