WR Terrelle Pryor ('10 Rose, '11 Sugar MVP)

Re: "the beast that's playing quarterback":

"You have to understand the beast that's playing quarterback," Steelers safety Ryan Clark said. " You have to understand what he brings to the game and that that's a part of their game and that they can do that. Once a guy like that gets in front of the whole defense, he's a legit 4.4. It's real. It just looks slow because he's 6-6, but he was moving."

Raiders' Pryor guarantees a fourth win
October, 31, 2013
By Paul Gutierrez | ESPN.com

ALAMEDA, Calif. -- Confidence is not one of Oakland Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor’s shortcomings as a player.

Because while it did not have the same ring or feel as another signal-caller from Western Pennsylvania sitting poolside in Miami in 1969, Pryor did have a pseudo-Joe Willie Namath moment.

“I mean, this isn’t a potential four-win team,” Pryor said. “We’re definitely going to get to four wins. That part’s easy. I’m not worried about that.”

Say what? Pryor, who has started all of seven games in his nascent NFL career and is 3-4 is guaranteeing wins now? And for a rebuilding team coming off a 4-12 season?

AP Photo/Ben Margot"Whether it's this week or next, we're going to get to four wins and get a lot more wins, I guarantee that," Terrelle Pryor said.
Well, um, yeah.

“Whether it’s this week or next, we’re going to get to four wins and get a lot more wins, I guarantee that,” he added. “If we work our butts off, it’s only clear for us to win, and I expect that from every team in the NFL to think like that.

“For as hard as they all work, I expect them to believe that they’re going to get more than four wins, more than eight wins. That’s my mindset and that’s guaranteed.”

Kelly all too familiar with Raiders' Pryor
October, 31, 2013
By Phil Sheridan | ESPN.com

PHILADELPHIA – Chip Kelly made the trip to Jeannette, Pa. He just couldn’t get Terrelle Pryor to make the trip to Eugene, Ore.

“Never got a chance to get him to come out and visit,” Kelly said Wednesday.

AP Photo/Marcio Jose SanchezTerrelle Pryor's 93-yard touchdown was the longest run by a quarterback in NFL history.
Kelly was the offensive coordinator, then head coach at the University of Oregon at the time. Pryor was a standout football and basketball player in Jeannette, a town about 30 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

“I knew him pretty well,” Kelly said. “I was in Jeannette about four or five times, watching him play basketball. Tremendous athlete.”

Pryor chose Ohio State, within driving distance of his friends and family in Western Pennsylvania. He and Kelly met again in the 2010 Rose Bowl. It was Kelly’s first bowl game as a head coach. Pryor led the Buckeyes to a 26-17 victory.

Ron Cook: Raiders' Pryor is as talented as ever
October 27, 2013

By Ron Cook / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
OAKLAND, Calif -- Somewhere, a bunch of kids -- grown men now -- from Greensburg Central Catholic High School and Mount Pleasant and Yough and even powerhouse Aliquippa are feeling just a little better about themselves this morning. Terrelle Pryor used to torture them by running through, by and away from their defense as a quarterback at Jeannette High School, the most ballyhooed recruit in Western Pennsylvania history. Now, he's a starter in the NFL for the Oakland Raiders. Sunday, he wasn't doing his magic against overmatched boys. He was doing it against talented men, millionaires with names such as Polamalu, Woodley and Timmons in a 21-18 win that went a long way toward ending the Steelers' relevance for the 2013 season.

"He might be more elusive than Michael Vick," Steelers safety Troy Polamalu marveled afterward. "We didn't see anyone catch him on tape."

The Steelers certainly didn't catch Pryor on the lawn of O.co Coliseum. On the first play of the game, after the Steelers won the coin toss and elected to start the game on defense, he ran for a 93-yard touchdown. It wasn't just the longest run in Raiders history. It was the longest touchdown run by a quarterback in NFL history, bettering the 80-yard touchdown run by the Steelers' Kordell Stewart against the Carolina Panthers in 1996.

"We can't start like that," Steelers safety Ryan Clark said. "They put our defense out there for a reason. They wanted us to get a stop against an offense we can control. And we can control that offense. We just didn't get it done on that play."

Oakland's Pryor still a double-threat guy

Connor Barwin has seen the highlight on ESPN about a hundred times, and just like the millions of others who have also seen that replay over and over again, the Philadelphia Eagles linebacker marvels at the speed and running ability of Oakland Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor.

Pryor put on a show last week when he took off on a 93-yard touchdown run against the Pittsburgh Steelers. And today Barwin and the rest of the Eagles will see that rare package of speed and power up close and personal.

When asked how the Eagles should defend the elusive Pryor, Barwin said it's really not that complicated, at least in theory.

"Keep him in the pocket,'' Barwin said. "That'll be a big part of our pass rush. We'll have to be very disciplined.''

Of course, the Steelers went into last week's game with the same defensive philosophy — keep Pryor in the pocket and force him to pass the ball, which is not the best part of his game. And Pryor still managed to take off for the longest run by a quarterback in NFL history and the longest run by any player in Raiders history.

"Pryor is a phenomenal athlete,'' Eagles defensive coordinator Billy Davis said. "The more film you watch, he makes you say 'Wow!' a lot of times with his escapability. So we've got our hands full this week with trying to keep him contained and really limit his play¿making ability, which is tough to do, because he's such a versatile athlete. He's big, he's strong, he can move, he can throw the ball, and his escapability is probably the best we've faced.''

Oakland Raiders' Terrelle Pryor, Darren McFadden suffer injuries
By Jerry McDonald

Philadelphia Eagles defenders stack up Oakland Raiders running back Darren McFadden (20) in the first quarter of an NFL football game, Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, at O.co Coliseum in Oakland, Calif. (D. Ross Cameron/Bay Area News Group)

OAKLAND -- Quarterback Terrelle Pryor and running back Darren McFadden did not finish a 49-20 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, and coach Dennis Allen said their availability for practice this week was not known.

Pryor left because of a right-knee injury after he fell awkwardly on a fourth-quarter scramble at O.co Coliseum. McFadden carried five times for 12 yards but left in the second quarter with a hamstring strain.

"I have to look at it tomorrow, but it's stable," Pryor said. "Nothing's wobbly or anything like that. It was just precaution. Nine minutes left in the game. We were losing.''

Allen said the decision already had been made to play Matt McGloin at quarterback, and he didn't learn of Pryor's knee injury until after the game was over.

Pryor piled up big numbers (288 yards passing, 94 yards rushing), but in the first half when the Eagles were piling up points, he was unable to find open receivers if the first option was covered.

Pryor has one touchdown pass and seven interceptions in his past three games. He also has 256 yards rushing in those games and has 485 yards on the season. The rushing record for a Raiders quarterback is 529 yards by Rich Gannon in 2000.

"I just have to make plays and help the team, help the offense," Pryor said. "It's a group effort. I think we made a lot of plays. We just didn't make enough."

A Stiff Challenge: Stopping Pryor
Giants Defenders Are Worried About Strong-Arm Move
The Giants have faced several strong-armed quarterbacks this season, but none who are so intent on using their arm-strength to humiliate would-be tacklers like Terrelle Pryor.

By Jonathan Clegg

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.—Playing against Terrelle Pryor poses some major concerns for any NFL team.

The Oakland Raiders quarterback, who set an NFL record with a 93-yard touchdown run against the Pittsburgh Steelers last month, possesses blistering speed, a cannon arm and an uncanny knack for evading tacklers and taking off upfield.

But as they prepare to face Oakland on Sunday, Giants defenders are worried about more than Pryor’s acceleration or elusiveness. They’re fretful about his capacity to hurt them in a way that is almost unheard of among NFL quarterbacks: By planting them into the turf and doing some serious damage to their reputations.

“I told them all: ‘You need to watch out for that stiff-arm,’” said rookie defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins, a college teammate of Pryor’s at Ohio State. “If he gets his hand on you, it can be very embarrassing for a defender.”

Oakland Raiders' Terrelle Pryor heavily into being a leader
By Jerry McDonald [email protected]
Posted: 11/08/2013

ALAMEDA -- The question was put to Terrelle Pryor by a student at Iron Horse Middle School in San Ramon in late March during a Raiders community visit.

Why had the two-sport recruit selected football over basketball out of high school?

The answer had nothing to do with the thrill of a touchdown pass as compared to a dunk.

"There's just something about having 10 guys looking at you, expecting you to lead them," Pryor said. "I love that."

At the time, Carson Palmer was still the quarterback, with the Raiders a few weeks away from trading him to the Arizona Cardinals and bringing in Matt Flynn.

It was a decision which would ultimately lead to Pryor becoming the starting quarterback, given Flynn's struggles and Pryor's undeniable skllls and rapid improvement.

Pryor, who leads the Raiders (3-5) into Sunday's game against the New York Giants (2-6) at MetLife Stadium, takes his role as a leader seriously.

When the Raiders retuned to practice this week following a 49-20 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Pryor made sure he did so with a bounce in his step even after missing time in the fourth quarter with a knee strain.

"It's just a leadership thing," Pryor said. "Some guys may come in and be kind of sluggish and not really feeling it. ... You have to come forward and show them energy. It's about setting positive examples and getting guys to gather around and believe. We let that game slip, but let's go get the next one."

Raiders' Pryor looking for run-pass balance

NEW YORK -- Raiders coach Dennis Allen was asked last week if quarterback Terrelle Pryor has regressed the past three games. Allen felt strongly enough otherwise that he wouldn't even repeat the word.

"No, I'm not seeing that term at all," Allen said. "I'm still seeing a guy that's progressing. I'm still seeing a guy that still makes some young player mistakes, but ... I think everybody's involved."

And he's right, offensive line injuries and receiver drops are not accounted for in the raw data.

But football is a game of numbers, and after going 90 passes without an interception, Pryor has seven in his past 79 throws.

Pryor leads all quarterbacks with 485 yards rushing this season (Seattle's Russell Wilson is second with 375), but as the Raiders take on the Giants, Oakland is ranked 30th in the NFL in passing and starting to look one-dimensional.

Raiders' Pryor hurting over poor performance
Scott Ostler
Sunday, November 10, 2013

  • Terrelle Pryor, sacked by Jason Pierre-Paul, said: "I wasn't myself." Photo: Elsa, Getty Images

East Rutherford, N.J. -- It seems like not so long ago that people were calling Terrelle Pryor the next Colin Kaepernick.

Pryor's stock has dropped of late, however, and now it's more like, is he the next Matt Flynn? Or Carson Palmer? Or Jason Campbell?

On Sunday, Pryor did not get 'er done, turning in a poor performance in the Raiders' 24-20 loss to the Giants.

Fortunately, there might be a simple mechanical explanation.

Unfortunately, the mechanical explanation is that Pryor has a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee. Early last week, the injury seemed non-debilitating, but it got worse as the week progressed.

Pryor's revelation of a sprained MCL was a news flash. Reports of his knee injury had been vague, and head coach Dennis Allen had seemed to indicate his quarterback was not seriously compromised.

"My knee's banged up," Pryor said after the game, speaking in a voice so faint he was barely audible. This was one woebegone young man, although when I asked him if he was discouraged, he said, "Not discouraged. My leg is very sore and I'm out there trying to do my best, and it wasn't doing anything. I wasn't able to, and I wasn't myself. With more treatment, hopefully this thing cures up fast."
