WR Terrelle Pryor ('10 Rose, '11 Sugar MVP)

Unless you have played a D1 sport it is hard to understand how deamnding it is. Name someone other than Charlie Ward who had success in both...
Not picking on the comment wadc45, but it is a very interesting question.
The most recent example I can think of would be WR/Pitcher Jeff Samardzija at ND, and that is arguably not the same level of difficulty as QB/Basketball. Recognizing this may get split off, are there other good examples?

I am by no means saying that 2 D-1 varsity sports is an easy thing with a strong precedent of success, BUT, with the intensity in HS sports these days, blue chip atheletes like TP are used to ridiculous schedules that include year-round HS basketball and football as well as very demanding summer travel schedules for AAU. Obviously, it's not apples-to-apples, but the support systems at mega programs like tOSU, PSU or Pitt are in place to help D-1 college athletes meet the academic AND athletic requirements. High schools can't possibly offer the same type of support, so you'd have to at least believe there is a chance for success in college. More pressure, yes, but much, much more support.

Im sorry but there is absolutely no rational reason why he cant do both. Ricky Dudley only quit basketball (senior year) when it was apparent that the NFL was his only option for playing sports professionally. Dudley was never a 5* basketball player. Proyer is. Guy down at FSU was there starting point guard and quarterback.... as I recall he won a heisman but played in the NBA So I do not for one second buy this he cant play both stuff.

There's a big difference between a Tight End like Dudley, or a defensive player like Peppers, and a quarterback. The time and preparation that it takes to be a starting quarterback on the D1 level is tough enough without taking time out to play basketball.

He might want to do both, but if he is serious about playing quarterback for a PSU or OSU type-school, I highly doubt he'll be able to pull it off for more than a year or so.

And if he's in position to be the starting quarterback, and I don't think the staff would even allow to play basketball...

i don't think pryor's athletic ability was ever being questioned. i believe his physical ability can handle the dual sports regime in college. but i would think the BIGGEST knock on athletes who wish to letter in 2 sports is whether they will be able to handle their school work WHILE challenge their body to such intense physical schedule. they ARE STUDENTS first, athlete latter.

Anyone else besides me reading too much into the fact that Pryor is the only QB we've offered thus far seemingly without any other QB offers on the verge? Not only this, but we do have some very quality QBs who are high on us, but yet no offers for anyone but Terrelle. Now, this can mean one of 2 things. One, the staff feels very confident about our chances with TP, or two, they don't want to hinder their chances of landing him by showing an offer to any other QBs around the country. I personally am biting on the first...

Thoughts?

My thoughts are that your user title is very appropriate and I want to believe that you are 100% correct.

I'm sure they feel good about their chances, but I think Pryor is likely the only quarterback who will be pursued by the Bucks this year, reguardless of who he chooses. Once Bauserman joins the team in the summer, we have 4 quarterbacks on the roster going into the 08' season, which is plenty.

He plays for MSU football and basketball, but on the b-ball squad, he's hardly a factor.

Trannon is not playing basketball this year, but in the previous years, I thought he was pretty solid. Rugged under the boards, good defender, gave Sparty hoops a "toughness." Not here to argue the point, though. I agree, that playing two sports at an elite level, particularly back to back seasons, is very difficult to do.

Good point.
