Once-controversial Glenn now flies under radar

BY JENNIFER FLOYD ENGEL

Knight Ridder Newspapers

OXNARD, Calif. - (KRT) - Terry Glenn has walked a mile in Quincy Carter's shoes.

He has felt what Ricky Williams was feeling.

Or pretty close to it.

Glenn did not fail a drug test, as Williams and Carter reportedly did this year, in 2001 in New England. He missed the test, which in the world of the NFL substance abuse program is treated as the same thing.

No delineation was made in the firestorm that followed. The stigma, hoopla and questions were the same and, having lived through it, Glenn can understand better than most why Williams would choose to walk away.

"Oh, I definitely did (consider retiring)," the Cowboys receiver said. "I went through a similar situation a while ago, though mine wasn't as direct. It was a point there where I felt like maybe if I just walked away from the game, all this stuff will go away. But the game wasn't really what I wanted to walk away from."

Glenn loves football, which is why Cowboys coach Bill Parcells loves him. He "gets it," to use a Parcells phrase.

Glenn is coachable, willing to do what is asked and singularly focused on winning. He does not quit and his work ethic is unmatched. He goes about his business with hardly any fanfare.

"That's pretty much how I always wanted it to be," Glenn said of his relatively low profile, which allows him to slip away after training camp practices virtually unnoticed.

"I was forced into that role (in the spotlight in New England) because of the round I was drafted and the success we had," said Glenn, the Patriots' first-round choice in 1996. "But right now this is who I am, a guy who likes to stay off the radar for the most part. Hopefully the defense will keep me off the radar a little bit until I run past them and catch a couple of touchdowns."

Not that flying low is difficult when the other two receivers among the Cowboys' top three are Antonio Bryant and Keyshawn Johnson. The former spent the off-season in the headlines for throwing a jersey in Parcells' face, while the latter is a lightning rod for attention. Everybody wants to know what Keyshawn thinks about everything, every day.Glenn, in contrast, is so low-key you almost forget he is on the team, except in games.

"I do not think people get him. His thing is, he wants to win," said Cowboys running back Eddie George, Glenn's teammate at Ohio State. "One of the first things he told me when I signed was, he was going to block his butt off for the backs this year."

Unlike in 2003, when Glenn was the slot receiver on third down and in three-receiver formations, Parcells has been using Johnson in the slot in camp. Glenn is on the outside, a much better fit for his skills. As Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre once said, Glenn makes running look easy, and in an offense short on speed, they need him on the outside.

"I just think that's a better spot for him," Parcells said. "He's not a big guy, and (the slot's) a heavy traffic area."

Which is not to say Glenn did not do well for himself there last season. He quickly became Carter's go-to guy. Johnson is simply a better blocker.

So how is Glenn doing in camp?

"Terry's good," Parcells said and then repeated it again. And again. And again.

Parcells barely talks about Glenn, even when pressed, which, if you study Parcells' talk, is a good thing.

The players he does not have to worry about, who have been around him before and do what he wants without being asked, are the ones he barely talks about. That is also why you probably won't see a lot of Glenn in preseason games. Parcells will get him just enough work to get him ready. Glenn is not worrying about the lack of repetitions, either. He knows Johnson is going to get his catches, Bryant is going to get his catches and he is going to get his.

"The real thing that Keyshawn and I have together, relationship-wise, is that I respect his game and he respects my game, and there are very few games that Keyshawn respects," Glenn said.

Great job for pointing out...

what kind of great team player Glenn is. He know his role, and that's whats going to make the Cowboys a passing threat this year. They have the players this year who will do what it takes, and no one who will cry. As long as KJ gets a steady dos of the ball he shouldn't run off at the lips!

Glenn cited for public intoxication

Posted: Saturday December 31, 2005 9:53PM; Updated: Saturday December 31, 2005 10:25PM
DALLAS (AP) -- Dallas Cowboys receiver Terry Glenn was cited for public intoxication in Dallas late Friday, police said.
An off-duty officer caught Glenn urinating behind a fast-food restaurant, Cpl. Jamie Kimbrough said. He was handcuffed but not taken to jail because he was with a sober adult, which is standard procedure, Kimbrough said.
Glenn leads Cowboys receivers with 1,092 yards and seven touchdowns. The Cowboys play their regular season finale Sunday at home against St. Louis.
Cowboys spokesman Rich Dalrymple said the team had no comment. Glenn's agent, James Gould, didn't immediately return a call seeking comment.

I remember seeing him at GameWorks up at Easton about 5 years ago. He was playing pool with some of his buddies and seemed to have a pretty good buzz on. He sounded like every other reciever in the NFL. He was talking about how they need to get him the ball, etc. But he was really friendly. He stopped and signed autographs for us, and took some pics. We saw him when we were leaving in his brand new Benz. He was DRIVING and didn't seem to be all that sober. A least this time he was smart enough to keep someone sober with him.

Glenn signs five-year, $20M deal with Cowboys

ESPN.com news services

Dallas Cowboys receiver Terry Glenn signed a five-year, $20 million contract extension Monday.

s3515.jpg

GlennGlenn's new contract, which runs through 2010 and replaces a previous contract that had one year remaining, comes just more than a week after Terrell Owens signed a three-year, $25 million deal with the Cowboys.
In the wake Owens' deal, Glenn suggested last week he might seek to have his own deal upgraded. At the same time, Glenn said his contract would not be an issue and emphasized he would not skip offseason workouts or training camp.
"We been trying to do something and have talked about it for a while. It finally came together," said Glenn's agent, Jimmy Gould. "He's excited about it. With he and T.O., it's a good deal."
Glenn was to have earned a 2006 base salary of $2 million and would have been eligible for unrestricted free agency next spring.
The Cowboys acquired Glenn, 31, in a 2003 trade with the Green Bay Packers. In three seasons in Dallas, he has 138 catches for 2,290 yards and 14 touchdowns. His average yards per catch in Dallas (16.6) is better than his career average (14.9). In 2005, his third season in Dallas and first reunited with quarterback Drew Bledsoe, Glenn had 62 receptions for 1,136 yards and seven scores. That performance represented his most receptions since 2000 and his most yards since 1999.
In 10 NFL seasons with the New England Patriots (1996-2001), Packers (2002) and Cowboys, Glenn has 523 catches for 7,726 yards and 86 touchdowns. He has played in 121 games and started 113 of them.
Still regarded as a viable deep threat, even after 10 seasons in the league, Glenn forces secondaries to honor his speed and, in that regard, should be an excellent complement for Owens.
A former Ohio State star, Glenn was selected by New England in the first round of the 1996 draft, when Bill Parcells was head coach. He set a then-rookie record that season with 90 receptions.
Information from ESPN.com senior writer Len Pasquarelli and The Associated Press was used in this report.

Terry Glenn's dogs hurt!

Wide receiver Terry Glenn is sitting out practice because of blisters on his feet. Glenn has spent some time on the stationary bike, and he's also getting in some work with a large exercise ball.
Our Pulitzer-prize winning phtographer, Irwin Thompson, is all over this, so look for pictures soon.
T.O. (left hamstring) has spent most of the morning on an exercise bike next to defensive end Marcus Spears (right knee).
Regarding safety Justin Beriault (concussion), I had a long discussion with him the other day. He still doesn't remember anything that happened in the days leading up to his major concussion. He took a shot to the chin early in a practice, and probably should've left the field at that point.
Later, someone accidentally rammed his knee into Beriault's head.
This is Beriault's fifth concussion. I talked to longtime team doctor, J.R. Zamorano about concussions the other day. He told Beriault the story of the time former quarterback Troy Aikman was so out of it from a concussion that he told doctors the Super Bowl would be played in Henryetta, Okla.

The enterprising folks in Henryetta responded by selling tickets to a fictitional Super Bowl. If memory serves correct, they made about $5,000 off those tickets.
Much, much more to come, including my take on the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate in Connecticut.

Comments blisters on his feet? they held him out of practice for that? i hope they aren't hiding anything becasue having our 1 and 2 WR's on the sideline is not good. this after they brought in 1st round BUST freddy mitchell. something doesn't seem right. but i hope i am just reading too much into it.
