WR Terry McLaurin (Pro Bowl, Washington Commanders)

Cathedral's Terry McLaurin rushes for 311 yards in 54-26 victory over Decatur Central

Cathedral’s Terry McLaurin lined up in unfamiliar territory Friday night at Decatur Central — 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage.

The Ohio State commit rushed for 311 yards on 18 carries with four touchdowns to pace the Irish to a 54-26 sectional victory.

“It was different. I am just trying to get a comfortability level,” McLaurin, normally a wide receiver, said of being in the backfield. “Hats off to the offensive line. They made big holes for me and made it easy to see my cut-back lanes.”

He entered the game with just 276 yards rushing this season. But it was clear that McLaurin knew what to do with the football when quarterback Collin Barthel handed it to him.

“We have done it at different times when we needed a spark,” Cathedral coach Rick Streiff said of McLaurin. “Terry is that kind of an athlete. He is a great football player, and the more we can put the ball in his hands, the better off we are.”

That spark came after No. 12 Decatur Central (5-5) took the opening drive in for a touchdown and followed that with a field goal after an onside kick to take a 9-0 lead with 6:14 remaining in the first quarter.

The Irish, ranked No. 5 in Class 5A, answered quickly, scoring 28 straight points on 12 plays covering 218 yards in 3:47. McLaurin tallied three of the four Irish touchdowns during that span — runs of 26, 52 and 51 yards.

“The play-calling was great and the linemen did a great job,” McLaurin said. “We are just going to try and build off this for next week.”

OSU football recruit Terry McLaurin of Indianapolis Cathedral High School dives into the end zone.

  • Terry McLaurin has been on a rocket ride for six months, and he has shown no signs of reaching his apogee.

The receiver from Indianapolis, who has committed Ohio State’s 2014 recruiting class, still feels he’s on the way up as a player who hardly anyone had heard of seven months ago.

“I refer to myself as a kind of under-the-radar recruit and player,” McLaurin said.

But his blip is growing stronger by the day.

Six months ago he showed up at Ohio State’s summer camp for the second time in two weeks, having improved his pass-catching skills in the interim to the point where the Buckeyes offered him a scholarship. He committed almost immediately.

A month later, he stunned onlookers at The Opening camp in Oregon when he stepped up in the vertical leap competition and seemed to defy gravity with a stunning 44.8-inch rise.

Then he returned home to lead his Cathedral High School team back to the Indiana state playoffs, a year after he helped them win a championship. The 2013 state playoffs, a tournament which includes all teams, moved to round two last night for Cathedral, and McLaurin was going in on a high.

The week before in a first-round game, Cathedral coaches moved him from receiver to running back. He responded by rushing for 311 yards and scoring four touchdowns on only 18 carries in a 55-26 win over Decatur Central.

“We have done it at different times when we needed a spark,” Cathedral coach Rick Streiff told the Indianapolis Star after that game. “Terry is that kind of an athlete. He is a great football player, and the more we can put the ball in his hands, the better off we are.”

McLaurin took it as an honor.

“It was nice to know the coaching staff has that kind of trust in me,” McLaurin said. “Being a senior leader and a captain, I expect that of myself each and every game.

“As we go through the playoffs, it is going to take more from me to give our team a spark at whatever position it may be.”

Indianapolis cathedral win tonight 35-21 to advance in the playoffs.
Very tight game that the Cathedral Irish almost lost but had to make a comeback. Terry had a quiet night with 4rec 54yds and 10car 48yds. Also played on defense for most of the second half as well

Cathedral's versatile Terry McLaurin heads talented class of Mr. Football candidates

Cathedral High School football coach Rick Streiff was filling out a form this week to nominate Terry McLaurin for one of the many awards the Ohio State recruit figures to be a finalist for when a number caught Streiff’s attention.

It was 14.1. As in the 14.1 yards McLaurin produces every time he touches the ball, whether it comes on a punt return, kickoff return, reception or handoff.

“When he gets the ball in his hands, he’s by far our most explosive player,” Streiff said. “So the idea is, ‘let’s get the ball in his hands.’”

McLaurin, who already had earned a reputation as a dynamic wide receiver and returner, has moved to running back with more frequency in recent games for Cathedral. He’s averaging nearly 10 yards per carry, including a 312-yard, four-touchdown effort against Decatur Central in the first round of the Class 5A sectional.

That combination of versatility and production will likely make McLaurin one of the top candidates for the IndyStar Indiana Mr. Football award when it’s voted on by a panel of Indiana Football Coaches Association members next month.

WR Terry McLaurin, Cathedral
By the numbers: The 6-foot, 190-pound McLaurin has caught 45 passes for 712 yards, rushed 66 times for 636 yards, averaged nearly 10 yards on seven punt returns and has returned two kickoffs for touchdowns, averaging 28.1 yards on 17 attempts. He also has played some cornerback on defense.

His case: Cathedral (6-5) plays a difficult schedule, but McLaurin should have a chance to showcase his skills deep into the tournament. His game-breaking ability is probably the best of any player in the area.

“I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t on my mind,” said McLaurin, whose Cathedral team plays Anderson tonight for the Sectional 13 title. “I didn’t really expect to play running back this year, but when they called on me to do that I just wanted to do whatever I could to help my team win. I’ll do whatever I can to keep this team winning.”

Cathedral won 56-14. Not much of a contest. Terry touched the ball maybe twice, let his younger teammates have a chance to shine. This is the weakest big division playoffs I've ever seen. Cathedral is practically walking over teams. I can see why their team plays so many out of state teams. Very weak indiana competition. Maybe he'll play a little more next week. But its evident his coach doesn't want to risk him to injury by using him for pure stats, because he could've had monster games the last 2wks

Indianapolis Cathedral does not play in the biggest division of Indiana football -- they are one level below at 5A.

Terry and the Cathedral Irish had another blowout in the playoffs with a 56-28 win. Still trying to find some stats on him, but I'm sure he didn't play much again, as this game was never in doubt. Cathedral is yet again walking over another easy competitor.

No stats as of yet, but what was supposed to be the best team cathedral has faced so far, they ended up blowing out 42-20. Cathedral is going to the state final yet again. I'm trying to get to the game after work and see terry up close again. Kid is electric when he gets enough touches, but the team has been blowing people out too fast for him to get enough of them

No mention of his stats, but the game was taken over by Cathedral's RB anyway. Cathedral Irish will be playing the Westfield Shamrocks next week for state title. The ridiculously hard regular season schedule of Cathedral makes their playoff runs seem like child's play. 3 time defending champs going for 4 in Lucas oil. Hopefully terry has a big game to end his career.

Class 5A features a dream matchup: No. 1 Westfield versus No. 5 Cathedral

The X-factor for Cathedral is Ohio State recruit Terry McLaurin, a wide receiver who has been moved to running back at times and also played some defense in the tournament. Gilbert said the Shamrocks have to know where McLaurin (862 receiving yards, 671 rushing yards) is at all times, but he added that the Irish have too many weapons to focus solely on one player.
