Xavier basketball parts ways with coach Travis Steele, Sean Miller reported as potential candidate to watch

"BREAKING: Xavier and head coach Travis Steele have mutually agreed to part ways effective immediately," Broering tweeted. "Xavier will start a national coaching search immediately."

Jeff Borzello reported Wednesday that Sean Miller, a former Xavier head coach in his own right, will be a “name to watch” moving forward.

Miller most recently coached at Arizona for 12 seasons before he and the university parted ways ahead of the 2021-22 campaign. The last three years of his tenure with the Wildcats were mired by allegations of recruiting violations and they even served a postseason ban in 2020-21 despite finishing the year 17-9.

Arizona last made the NCAA Tournament under Miller during the 2017-18 season after going 27-8 and winning both of the Pac-12 regular-season and tournament championships. Arizona went under investigation after a federal probe regarding corruption among NCAA schools. The situation stems from former Wildcats staffer Emanuel “Book” Richardson who pleaded guilty to accepting bribes to steer Arizona players to sports agent Christian Dawkins.

According to multiple reports, Richardson spent three months in prison for accepting bribes. Miller has been on record stating that he has not paid any prospects to attend his program. He maintained that he never will engage in that activity.

“I have never paid a recruit or prospect or their family or representative to come to Arizona,” Miller has said previously. “I never have and never will.”

Xavier Musketeers rally past Texas A&M, win first NIT championship since 1958

If this was the last NIT championship game at Madison Square Garden, it certainly was a thriller.

Especially for Xavier.

Jack Nunge made the go-ahead basket with 3.1 seconds left and the Musketeers won their first NIT crown in 64 years Thursday night, rallying for a 73-72 victory over Texas A&M.

"What has happened in their program over the last two weeks is historical and any AD that has a job opening should hire the undefeated head coach at Xavier, Coach Hayes,'' Williams said.

Hayes took over when head coach Travis Steele was fired following Xavier's victory over Cleveland State in the first round of the NIT.

Sean Miller, the former Arizona coach, was hired for his second stint at Xavier and will now take charge of the program. A smiling Miller watched from the MSG stands Thursday night.

Yeah, he should bet some serious consideration for a head coaching job somewhere; if not might be a good hire for Chris Holtmann for one of the assistant coach vacancies.

United States of College Basketball: Predicting the best team in each state for the 2022-23 season

ncaamb-mapstory-v4.jpg

Ohio: Xavier Musketeers
State of the state: A fun four-team race among the four biggest programs. Xavier, Dayton, Ohio State and Cincinnati all have designs on making the NCAAs in 2023. I'm thinking at least one of those teams will come up short, but at least the hoops are good in the Buckeye State these days. Toledo and Kent State are 1-2 in the MAC (pick your order), and Akron's No. 3. Ohio and Wright State remain respectable (at the very least) mid-major outfits. But I'll say Xavier makes moves right away under Sean Miller and edges out Dayton (barely) as the top team. Ohio State has major questions and Cincinnati is a year away from the big bump.
