Youngstown State player charged in July murder in Akron

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- A Youngstown State football player has been arrested and charged in the shooting death of an Akron man.

Anthony Norman Jr., a redshirt freshman linebacker from Akron, was charged with murder, attempted murder and carrying a concealed weapon in the July shooting death of Christopher L. Harris, Akron police said Wednesday.

Harris was killed by crossfire when Norman and Michael Welch, both 19, began shooting at each other in a parking lot, police said. Norman, taken into custody Tuesday, was being held in the Mahoning County jail.

"I was just as surprised as everyone," Penguins coach Jon Heacock said. "You're disappointed. It hurts and bothers you. Our football family is like any family."

Norman has not played in a game for Youngstown State, which is 7-1 this season.

Welch was charged with attempted murder, felonious assault, carrying a concealed weapon and weapons under disability.

:sad2: I just do not understand.... Man oh man, do these kids realize the thousands of kids who want to college but can't and these kids are given golden tickets and blow it. It really bothers me that we see kids blow these opportunities like this.

This goes WAY beyond blowing the opportunity given you for a college education. he has taken someone's life - that kid had his opportunity and life taken from him.
That's a huge part of why these things happen - it's easy for someone to "accept" the consequences to themselves for their actions. (i.e. Yeah, I will go to jail, but I don't care) The sad part is that they don't ever consider the consequences to others when they impulsively take these actions. They only see the world thru what happens to themselves.
Violence on a daily basis will do that to anyone - a continual survival mentality.
Kids are growing up to be so self-centered these days (do what's right for you; if it feels good for you, its OK; you're entitled to this and that; any actions are OK as long as you know how to avoid the consequences; moral relativism; etc.) they end up almost amoral or with some sort of psychotic tunnel vision where the consequences of their actions on others is not even something that enters their mind - it's a totally foreign concept.
My older son kept getting tnto trouble last year in school, and he was being punished, but the only messages the school was giving him was how his behavior was negatively affecting him. My feedback to him was always how it affected the other person.
Empathy is becoming more and more rare. Condescention and elitism masked as empathy is the order of the day.

Rant over! Sorry!

I was holding my breath when I clicked on this thread. I have a few really good friends on the team

I'm sure there's some good punchlines to the effect of "You sure Irizarry or Williams didn't do it?", but I can't think of a good one right now.

when I heard that I lost it. I grew up with his father who is a very nice guy to all that knew him

I met him and watched him play alot, he was always a nice kid and just like his dad,. One of those guys by his look you would not mess or smart off with but, he was always polite and easy going. This one has got me bad, you think people are ok when you get to know them and watch them grow up as a good kid and then this happens.

He was good friends with steve walker another life taker and past buchtel player that was a pittsburgh player before, he flunked out.. I have no clue why these kids do these things.
