Youngstown St. at tOSU, Sat. 9/9, 12pm EST, BTN

I don't see how that's just as bad. If he was straight up getting physically manhandled there would be no hope for improvement. If his issue is mental, that can be improved with coaching and reps

Here's my take (and I'm a Buckeye Fan).

There's definitely a drop off (to be expected) when replacing a 2 year starter. The problems with the OL were actually helpful in identifying McCord's weaknesses, namely his slower release and his mobility.

The late pass over the middle wasn't a good decision, but he's clearly not as athletic as the last several QBs. That's not a shot at McCord, but we're going to need better team play (the team as a whole will need to make up for some of his limitations). We will need to have lights out defense and an excellent running game. We also need better pass protection because he's going to need time to get his throws off.

Day's job is to figure this out.

One other thing to keep in mind. While the penguins are completely overmatched, their OL is not like the FCS teams that your think of normally. They go 6'6 300+ across the OL

Youngstown plays in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, the same one that has North Dakota State and South Dakota State. They're probably going to finish in the top 3 of that conference this year.

Last year Iowa beat South Dakota State 7-3 with two safeties and a field goal.

The OL looks the part of FBS teams. Have to be gig up front to win against the Dakota teams . YSU gave Kentucky a lot of trouble last year until their 65 scholarship depth showed up.
Shit maybe we should have been poaching up northeast instead of out west!

They're a developmental program. Can't get the guys that are 6'6 310lbs out of high school. They get the 6'6 270 lb guys that were overlooked and develop them. Many starters could play FBS and fewer make it to the NFL. But once you get through the starters, the drop off is steep. That's why they can hang around for 2 quarters before losing to a deeper roster.

I'm not saying that they have better athletes, what I'm saying is that they can beat most MAC teams etc.

If Simmons looks lost or gets beat on Saturday, I'd just put Montgomery in the fire and let him learn. If we're going to be abysmal at LT, I'd rather be abysmal with someone who has potential and several years left in the program.

There's no reason to open anything up. If we can beat Indiana going vanilla, why would we need to open anything up here?

Because there's less risk opening up here than there was on the road at Indiana. They're going to have to open it up at some point so why not do that when you can afford to do it and see where the issues are.

I'm not saying run every play you have, but you should be able to let McCord sling it this week.

They are going to be aggressively vanilla. Anything special that they showcase will be on purpose, not because they necessarily "have to" do it....

Yea you gotta get McCord into slinging it to see if he can indeed do it. Waiting until the ND game for that might go bad.
