Youngstown St. at tOSU, Sat. 9/9, 12pm EST, BTN

35 points is pretty lackluster today.

Between clock rules and qb rotation games... im good with this.
We got McCord to MHJ and Egbuka connections. That's what i wanted to see for the passing game.
Henderson rebounded, bringing back a 3way competition for RB. Good problems.
Brown got vital reps as a backup; especially with how suspect the OL is. Had 1 really good drive imo, that's all i want to say about it.
Banked some officiating karma with points taken off the board.
OL is still the biggest issue.

I think some folks need to chill a bit. I feel that coming into this season (1) most folks were prepared for some growing pains as we just turned over a ton of the offense and team experience, especially at OL and QB and (2) many of those folks acknowledged it was important to build up towards Michigan rather than build for Indiana.

And, spoiler alert, there's growing pains. But this is exactly as expected and has been expected for the history of college football. New QB and new OL is hard no matter what era.

The ugly part is YSU held Ohio State to 7 points in the second half. How much of it was QB play substitution?
Nearly all of it I think. Couple that with YSU converting a ton of 1st downs and this is what we get.

All those reps in the off season and these first two weeks were split. We certainly aren’t having rhythm issues if we had just had the balls to pull the trigger on someone.

There had to be a statistical winner over the spring and halfway through the fall. That’s who you roll with.

Top 5 positives and negatives

Positives

1. Kyle McCord looked good I thought. Threw some tough throws and he’s the one that makes the offense move. The coaches need to give him all the first team reps next week and go.

2. Defense adjusted well by adding a corner instead of a 3rd safety. Martinez is just a liability vs most WRs and that’s no knock on him. IMO he should be on offense where he’s electric. He’d be dynamic on jet sweeps etc

3. Burke is legit shut down. Challenged multiple times and he was in zero danger of giving up any of them.

4. Styles is largely avoided but when teams do challenge him it’s general a mistake for the offense.

5. I thought Henderson actually played well today and the OL was outstanding with pass pro.

Negatives

1. The overall plan on offense. There’s no urgency, there’s no rhythm, and a pretty noticeable lack of physicality.

I get wanting to work on things which is what lead to 40+ passes but how does this help us prepare for ND? It doesn’t. So it did nothing to establish our brand of football which I’m sure for ND will be balance and setting up play action.

We complain about not having enough possessions and seem to have no intent to press things offensively.

2. Penalties were back breaking today. We had multiple touchdowns called back on penalties and had two drives killed by them too.

3. In what should’ve been our easiest game we were playing Marv and Egbuka during the last minute of the game. What a waste to play our depth.

4. Give Kyle the job and move on. This dual QB stuff is absolutely murdering our productivity and sort of feeds my main issue with our O having no rhythm.

5. I’m ready to state that JT and Jack are fairly average. They’re good players but they are not elite play makers. Where is the pass rush? Our two sacks were Tommy and again a DT. The DEs really have been nonexistent since Chase left.

Yeah, I expected a lot more out of JTT and Sawyer.

It is an interesting thought though.
If you can script first 2 series and get points on the board... then just go triple option or dave and kill the game off.

That is essentially the game plan of every Tressel type coach since the dawn of time.

Once you start players by to eat clock instead of to score you get in trouble. No defense is that good anymore
