2013-14 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

All I know is our basketball coach has the 15th highest career winning % and our football coach has the 4th highest career winning %. All I'm saying is it's a pretty good time to be a Buckeye.

Also: #14 on the list of career college basketball coach winning % is a gentleman named Student Coaches, who has by far, by far, the best name for a college basketball coach of all time.

Teams have poor games sometimes, Jake. I think it is without question that OSU was not playing their best against ND. They were out of synch offensively the whole game, couldn't get anything in the halfcourt offense and played with no confidence whatsoever. Clearly the defense that ND played threw off OSU - you know, ND had a week to prepare while OSU had 3 days and needed a tough test to grow from. 2013 National champion Louisville lost to ND last year in February, and didn't lose another game afterward.

They didn't play great but I don't think they had a poor game necessarily. The fact is this just isn't a great offensive team. They are going to have stretches where they really struggle to score. And when teams play zone---like Notre Dame did tonight---their deficiencies on offense will be even more pronounced.

It may not be pretty so far but they are getting the job done....Winning a game like they just did in stunning fashion can propel a team into a major momentum burst, lets hope this is the case.

“We weren’t talking, we weren’t communicating, giving them layups in the post,” OSU’s Thad Matta said. “It was really odd. We came out (in the second half) and had no juice, not only to keep the lead but to win the basketball game.

“We got drastically confused a couple times with the NBA 3-point line.”

Notre Dame 79
Duke 77

That Notre Dame win looks better, and the 15-0 record doesn't hurt, either. Maybe this year's team will surprise me? I sure hope so.

Frankly, they've already surprised the heck out of me.

Yeah, I think this OSU team has been a pleasant surprise to some extent thus far. They have had a few guys step up and clearly play better than last year (at least Scott, Williams and ADV), Loving has contributed more and been more effective than I had expected, and Ross has now started to become more consistent. They've got to win by committee, with everyone pitching in and doing their part, but they've got a good blend of different skills and good depth. I would say a team like this is one where there isn't the star power there in terms of having a future NBA star on the roster, but they play well together and do a lot of things well that make up for the offensive talent not being as great as it has been in the past. They take care of the ball well, they pass well, they force TOs well, they have pretty much everything covered well, it's just they have to win as a team because they don't have "that guy" that can just score against anybody.

Maryland is 7-5, Marquette is 7-4 and playing New Mexico tonight. Turns out 8-3 Notre Dame is our stiffest test to date and the Buckeyes are not impressing. The #3 ranking is looking fairly silly given tonight's performance. ND is not THAT good, given they've lost home games to Indiana State and North Dakota State.

At this point, we may be looking at a conference season unlike what we've grown accustomed to in recent years. This team needs to improve a lot, and in a hurry. I'm just not sure there is much room to grow for many of these players.
So what are your thoughts on ND now, now that they have upset Duke WITHOUT their star player Grant who had a big 18 points against OSU?

I'm ready to acknowledge that the Buckeyes really are among the top 10 teams in the nation.

I still think Kentucky and Kansas are probably the most talented two teams, and expect them both to end up in the Final Four. But it's also not out of the realm of possibility that the Buckeyes will be a Final Four team.

Agreed. Not outside the realm of possibility at all, especially if OSU can get a favorable break in the bracket. Regardless, the relentless defense this team plays gives it a shot against almost anyone in the nation. Go Bucks.
