Re: the Maryland to the B1G rumors (see twitter), apparently this all originated from some Maryland radio station (don?t know which one) on Monday that was talking like it is all but a done deal. Allegedly a Columbus radio station (97.1) is going to be talking about it tomorrow as well.

.../cont/...

So 97.1 hasn't talked about the rumor yet but is allegedly going to do so today (the post was from last night).

Lets swap Pitt for PSU

Best of both worlds...

Keep roughly the same area for the network....

Watch PSU struggle in the ACC and keep up with there the world is against us campaign.

Watch Pitt become more important in the NCAA world then PSU

There heads will literally explode.

This sounds great until you factor in the Mark May effect

I'm good with it if they are the replacement for Penn State.

Look, I don't think anyone can question my Ped Aggy hating credentials, but I've come around to the position that the pedsters should stay.

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer, kind of thing. We keep them under fucking control. We keep their media markets locked down. We keep their throats firmly underneath our hobnailed boot on the field. We prevent them from ever rising up and threatening decent folk again.

Plus, with each loss to Ohio State or Michigan, with every questionable call that goes against them, with every year that goes by without a conference championship, we get to revel in the sweet, exquisite glory of their agony.

These people are the biggest assholes and most despicable fanbase in college football. If there is something that will make them happy, why in the fuck would we give it to them?

If nothing else it's good for the entertainment value of watching the reactions among other fan bases:

Maryland

Rutgers fan hoping it's true on the Maryland Scout board which seems to be a theme Rutgers fans are EXCITED by the news (since apparently they think that means they're next). Meanwhile the Rutgers response makes Syracuse fans lol...and of course a crazy expansion rumor wouldn't be completely without WVU weighing in.

From the WVU thread...

Specualtion by Insiders at OSU are Maryland, Rutgers, Virginia, and UNC to the B1G. Once the GOR for the Big12 expires, Texas, Oklahoma and two others to the B1G, and this could include anyone from GaTech, Clemson, ND, or FSU. The thinking is a conference of 20 with four pods of 5, which would mean 9 in conference opponents per season. The pods would rotate each year so every school would play at least once every three years (6 year rotation).

VaTech and NC State to the SEC.

Soo... Delaney is not only going to blow up the ACC BUT the B12 as well. Awesome! :slappy:

FWIW I really doubt Maryland will ever go to the Big Ten, even though they would be a great fit I think.

Maybe if the Big Ten were able to chisel Virginia out of the ACC, I would give it more credence. Until then, I don't see it happening.

Maryland would JUMP at the chance. Improvement in athletics and academics. Keep in mind this is about research $'s as much as it is TV revenue. Maryland being an AAU school would love the opportunity.

It really depends on how much pressure the boosters apply. Believe it or not many of them really want to keep playing Duke, UNC, State Wake & Tech in basketball.

That is of course if any of this talk were real and I don't think any of us believes it is right now.

I think a lot of it depends on who the boosters are and where they fit into the university's power structure. I'm continually amazed at my Texas alumni friends who talk about "The Cigars" and how intimately they are involved in athletics. Contrast this with our "cigars" (Wexner, Ong, Schottenstein, Fisher, Oates, Moritz, Lowery) who have little or no direct--i.e. donor--relationship to the athletic department.

If Maryland is like Texas where most of the boosters also happen to be most of the university's major donors and power players, they'll have a say. If Maryland is like Ohio State where the major athletic boosters are second and third tier power players, I'm not so sure.

And you figure whatever is left of the Big 12 would split between the SEC and the PAC 12, so you'd have 3 super pods going at it....I kinda like that idea, especially since it's leaves Ntre Ame with basically no options but whatever is left of the ACC, independence or joining the SEC :slappy:

Maryland boosters have a decent amount of pull because they're the ones footing the bill for the athletic department. The AD must be self sufficient; the school can't draw from the general fund for athletics. So when it's in a bind (like now) it leans heavily on the boosters to help make ends meet.

There's also Kevin Plank (Under Armour founder) and which way he decides to throw his weight.

BTW check who the current chancellor of the University of Maryland system is.
