Penn State?s Bill O?Brien No Stranger to Adversity
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. ? Every morning, Bill and Colleen O?Brien know their older son, 10-year-old Jack, will have a seizure when he wakes up. It could last 30 seconds or go on for 30 minutes, necessitating an ambulance trip to the hospital. There may be more seizures during the day, depending on disparate factors like weather patterns and Jack?s growth spurts. And when they happen, the O?Briens can do little except to turn their son on his side and wait for the seizure to end.

The O?Briens face daunting challenges every day that have nothing to do with scholarship restrictions, a bowl ban or reviving the sullied reputation of the Penn State football program. In a college town where perspective has become a buzz word in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal, O?Brien, the Nittany Lions? new coach, and his family have plenty of experience in keeping it.

?Obviously the challenges that they?ve had, those are far greater challenges than what?s going to come down the road professionally,? said Syracuse Coach Doug Marrone, Bill O?Brien?s best friend. ?I know that the football situation now is a great challenge, and people have their perspective on it, but they go through great challenges every single day.?

Bill O?Brien has an Ivy League education and more than a dozen years as a college assistant, and he took a salary cut of more than 50 percent at age 37 in order to be a glorified film grunt for the New England Patriots. Yet what has shaped him and his wife most has been their experience with Jack, who has a rare genetic brain malformation known as lissencephaly. Jack O?Brien moves around only by wheelchair or commando crawling on his belly and has severely limited motor planning, meaning the brain is slow to tell the body what to do.

BOB has a child with a genetic brain malformation, lissencephaly that causes seizures, among many other symptoms. Really touched to read how he goes about his life in light of this. I used to date a girl with seizures. I also have a close friend with a child who has hydrocephalus. I know first hand, how they deal with life, and can relate. I can't help but like this guy, no matter how much I hate Penn State and their idiot fans.

I couldn't find a thread dedicated to BOB, so I started one. Mods feel free to move or merge if there is a thread.

He seems like the perfect hire for PSU. He will have little pressure to win for 5 years. If he survives or stays, he could rebuild them into a power.

His family needs stability, I assume.

He's in a horrible situation, especially considering that he was told there probably wouldn't be sanctions. The PSU fans will handle this situation one of two ways 1) Blame O'Brien and basically force him out. Or 2) They will blame the Big Ten referees and the NCAA for all of their losses. I really hope it's #2 because that would be a lot funnier, and because I think O'Brien no longer has the resources to win at Penn State, and it would suck to see the mob turn on him.

Season hasn't even started and this has already happened in spades over on their boards. BOB will be given a pass for the next couple of years simply because the B1G and the NCAA are in it to keep the pedsters down. The BOB statue has already been commissioned.

Beef O'Brady.

Pay attention here.

I am creating a rule for this thread: every post with a reference to Billybob O'Buttchin must contain a unique name with the initials B.O'B.

Every time someone posts in this thread without a new B.O'B name, it's a dingable offense.

Hey, it's about time I did something moderator-like.

As disillusional as many Penn State fans are, it will probably be both. He is literally in a "no win" situation. My guess is that the old adage of "you never want to be the coach that follows a legend" will ring true here.
