Bitching about the 2004 Season

Smith loves to pass downfield. Short passes have been his weakness.

Smith and Zwick both got there fair shot and reps in practice, but Smith needs to get some game reps(more than 1 series) so we can know if Zwick is what we have to live with.

Turning Point?

When did you realize we were in trouble? The nail in the coffin was Santonio Holmes dropping a punt and the poor pass coverage that followed. I was also startled by all of the shotgun formations. Obviously Zwick was terrified of the Wisconsin front 7 and the coaching staff demonstrated little confidence in our line. Could be a rough year, but we were in this one until that crucial dropped punt.

Offense

Does anyone feel today that our offense actually had a very open and different feel to it than it usually has? We ran misdirection plays , screens, passed on first down, and we did some draws as well. I don't see our play calling beeing a bad thing tonight except on the 3rd and 1 when they decided to go deep instead of giving Joe the ball. What it boiled down to was Zwick couldn't hit his man. Plain and simple. He was sharp early and because of that we where able to run that ball. We ask for us to pass the ball more but running the ball 15 or so times WILL NOT get it done. Over all I think the play calling was alot better. The Line still sucked, and I think the worst performer was Zwick. I know you'll say he's young but come on guys he had some people wide open. Not only late in the game but early when I thought he was in a grove. He totally missed on Santonio Holmes Deep. On a good note Pittman is going to be a freak by the time he leaves, and thats a fact. (just don't ask Trev or Mark that question). Very Very dissapointing performance by Zwick.......

Lydell cf AP

the difference in an adequate back and a great back

Lydell has just never struck me as being an instinctive runner; hard worker, wants to make it happen, but...

Tough to watch this game today.

Does anyone remeber Tressel's first year? We looked exactly like we do this year. Our offensive line struggled, our quarterback struggled, our running game was none-existent and we won games against bad teams. We ended the season with our 2nd staight loss to South Carolina and then came the glory of the 2002 football season. Maybe this is going to be Tressel's method at Ohio State. I'm sure all in Buckeye Nation would love to have or play for a National Championship every three years. I'm sure this is the most optimistic view on the entire planet but I have hope. Good luck Buckeyes.

Southern - I can remember feeling so frustrated watching the UCLA game that year. Jim Karsartos was questioning the play calling and design from the sideline when they were running one man routes. We not as bad as we were then, but I don't see the progression on consistency I would like to see from the offense.

I think it is much worse this year. That season, only in the waning minutes against Illinois did we trail a team by more than a TD. It has happened the last two games this year. In '01, we were always one play away from a win, we just didn't make the play, most of the time Bellisari overthrew it. This year, it takes a lot just to even the game up, last week a TD and FG to tie for OT and this week, we would have needed a TD with a 2-pt convert and a FG just to get it tied. I am frustrated, much more so than in '01.

The cold reality- we had expectations for this team that were too high. We've got talent, but much of it, at skill positions, is young talent. We all bought in to the hype that Zwick was given, coming in as the QB that would save OSU. I think one day he will be that QB, but not now.

This team will get better as the season goes along, and they'll get better during the off-season. Next year we'll be a much improved team.

We are not as good as we thought we were, and it's time to face that fact. We all expected a "re-loading" year, and what we've actually got is a "re-building" year.

It sucks to lose, and it pisses me off just as much as the next guy, but we'll be back. Count on it.
:oh: :io:
