Brian "Body Kount" Kelly (HC Louisiana State)

Kelly would be a mistake. His defensive at Cincy has been very average, so from that standpoint, he has nothing over Weiss. If ND wants a guy who can give them those extra seven points to beat teams like Navy, then Kelly is their guy. But if they want to compete on a national level against the likes of UF, Texas or OSU, they need to start with a defensive minded coach and a program builder.
His 2008 Cincy defense actually was very good, ranking in the top 25 in total, rushing, and scoring defense and #28 in the nation in pass efficency defense.

IIRC they lost something like 9 starters off of last year's defense and switched to a 3-4 as well.

By no means am I suggesting he's a defensive mastermind, but I think he realizes you need a good defense to win ballgames, especially with a background as a former LB and defensive coordinator.

And those were Dantonio's guys.

I see Kelly as a guy who's going to make sure that ND gets by teams like Navy and Syracuse without major meltdowns, so probably two more wins a season, but nothing more. You are not going to win NCs with spread guys, just ask Michigan.

I agree with your point on Kelly, but at this point I'm not sure who the Irish would hire that would be a better fit. Harbaugh would have been a good canidate, but it doesn't seem he was interested in leaving Stanford at this time and ND didn't seem to pursue him aggressively. Stoops isn't going anywhere, and I'm not sure a Big 12 coach is the answer when that league is mostly offense anyway, I'm not sure how much different that would be. Urban doesn't seem to be going anywhere, he would probably be the best fit to rebuild the defense and continue to bring recruits in.

The Irish are kind of between a rock and a hard place right now. The last three coaches have similar records despite their differences in coaching and recruiting. The only indication we have that Kelly would be better than Weis is comparing similar opponents. Kelly gave up more points to both Pittsburg and Conneticut, but he also scored more points and won both games while Weis did not. I'm not very knowledgeable on how Cincinnati's recruits compare to those Notre Dame has snagged, but I would think Notre Dame would have an edge to make things a little easier.

In short, this was probably a bad year to fire Weis. If they do hire Kelly and he turns out good, all is well. If we maintain the status quo we lose another 3-5 years and we can only hope another big name coach is waiting for the job. Either way, I don't see Notre Dame extending any large buyout clauses/contract extensions to a coach until they can prove they can beat USC and coach a complete team.

IDK, but the coach at TCU seems to be able to field very impressive defenses and has a solid record of defeating top notch teams like Oklahoma and Clemson over his tenure. Maybe he's not interested, but if you want to build your program into elite status, that's the kinda guy you need.

He just signed an extension with TCU though, so he's presumably off the market for this year.

I think Brian Kelly will recruit equally as well as Charlie Weis did, but develop his players further, and be a better Head Coach. He now has a major program behind him, great facilities, and a huge brand name. His system might be the biggest draw...prepare you for Sunday, and also provide you an opportunity to put up huge numbers in college...best of both worlds.

This is what I've been thinking about. Kelley could simply be a bit of an upgrade over Weis, or he cold really be a great head coach. He's usually going to have a great offense where ever he goes, but I'm not sold on hiim yet.

One Cincy writing said he had built a dynasty, but for all the hype he's gotten, he hasn't won a major bowl (even against just an ok opponent) and struggles on defense at times. Now, of course, he has done a great job at UC, but I'm just not sure that he is quite as good as some think. At ND though, he'd have the talent to play with FL, Texas, OSU, etc.

He won the Home Depot Coach of the Year Award.

Someone from ND had one of those already this decade...

Having been an MBA student at GVSU when Kelly was there the guy has been a winner where ever he has coached. I know there are people who Pooh-Pooh this pick, however there were people who doubted the hiring of a small program coach eight years ago. That pick has certainly turned out alright, however only time will tell if ND picked the right guy. One thing for sure ND could have certainly done worse.........

Given that they have hired a coach with a fake resume, a HS coach, and an NFL coach with less applicable experience than said HS coach I would submit that they make a living doing worse.

He lost 10 starters this year. To give Kelly some credit, last year he took a guy who was a 3 year TE and turned him into a DE his senior year (Connor Barwin). This kid is now playing DE on Sundays.
