These are Roby's current ratings:

Scout: 3*, #43 CB nationally
Rivals: 3*, #67 in Georgia, not ranked at CB nationally

These are Roby's stats and offers:

6' 1", 171 lbs, 4.4 forty, 40" vertical
Offered by Ohio State, Georgia, Alabama, Auburn

If initial ratings and rankings were done after the kids' senior years, then Roby would possibly be a five-star prospect, and at the very least a high four-star. His height is much better than a couple of the other DB prospects whom Ohio State offered (Lemarcus Joyner, Latwan Anderson), and his speed and athletic ability are just as good. He's a bit lean, but after a red shirt season, he's probably up to 190 or so, which makes him the ideal size to be a Buckeye corner. Plus, he's got a 3.86 GPA and no character issues.

If the kid turns out to be another Donald Washington or Ashton Youboty, then he will have been a quality signee, not doubt about it ... but he's got the potential to be another Malcolm Jenkins ... and if I'm going to take a risk on a kid, I like my odds in finding the next Malcolm Jenkins (6' 1", 205 lbs) a whole lot better than in finding the next Antoine Winfield (5' 8", 180 lbs).

I guess what I'm saying is this ... I like Roby better than Joyner (size, upside) and way better than Anderson (size, upside, no academic or character issues). It will be interesting to see how their respective careers turn out.

Receiver's move to cornerback got Buckeyes' attention

Considering that Bradley Roby of Suwanee, Ga., has run 40 yards in less than 4.35 seconds, it's difficult to label him a late bloomer as a college football prospect.

But he was late out of the gate.

Roby, who has committed to Ohio State as a cornerback, was primarily a receiver until his senior season last year.

"Had I played him at cornerback as a junior, there is no doubt in my mind he would have been considered one of the top prospects out there this year," said Roby's coach, Bill Ballard of Peachtree Ridge High School. "His potential is enormous. He is as smooth as silk."

Such athletic ability was the reason Roby had wanted to play receiver.

"I really do regret not making that move to corner sooner, because I think I would be much, much better at the position by now," Roby said. "I am really starting to get that mindset. I think it's going to be a great position for me and I can't wait to get even better at it."

"Coach Haynes kept in contact with me. It wasn't like all of a sudden, 'Oh, yeah, let's offer this guy,' " Roby said.

He accepted, and this week when Bryant committed, the Buckeyes had their two cornerbacks for the class.

"Ohio State is known for having some of the best corners, if you look throughout their history, so that was attractive," Roby said. "And I've been up there three times, and I liked everything about Ohio State. So I couldn't find any reason why I wouldn't want to go there."

I know what you're saying but I guess I could cut Tim some slack on this one as Roby was a late offer and the traditional "experts" don't have him rated as highly.

Having said that, we all know what happened recently with his offer list, so it's obvious what the real experts think...

I still look at this as one of those traditional late JT offers and hope he pans out similar to many of our other success stories.

So now that your recruitment is wrapped up, how does it feel to be a Buckeye?
It feels great that it is finally over. It?s exciting because I have always dreamed of playing big time college football ever since I was little and now its finally here. I love Ohio State and being a Buckeye feels great

You seemed to be very honest with the Vandy staff the whole way. Can you walk us through your recruitment process with them and how you ended up at Ohio State? How did Coach Johnson and the staff take the news?
Well during the Christmas Break I called the Vandy coaches and told them that I was de-committing. It was hard to hear the disappointment in his [Coach Johnson?s] voice but it was something I had to do for me. They told me that I was one of their prized recruits and that they had plans to use me in certain ways but in the end, I felt Ohio State was a better fit for me.


How big of a factor was Cameron Heyward in your decision to come to OSU? If he didn?t come back next year, would you still have been a Buckeye? How excited are you that he came back?
He helped recruit me pretty good. When I went up there this summer, he toured me around and he kind of sparked my interest in Ohio State. Yes, I would still come to Ohio State, because I thought he was leaving for the draft before I made my mind up anyway. It is a good plus that he is staying though.

One of those needs was the cornerback position, which Tressel called one of the hardest positions to project at the college level. OSU cornerbacks coach Taver Johnson said the Buckeyes were looking for guys that are fast, smart and physical with great hips and great ball skills.

They landed two players who fit those requirements in the class of 2010, although Christian Bryant and Bradley Roby could not have come under more contrasting circumstances.

One of the top-rated corners in the country, and a U.S. Army All-American, Bryant was on just about everyone?s radar from the very start. It wasn?t until midway through the process, however, that things started to heat up for Roby.

Recruiting class rankings likely do not reflect intangibles

One of the qualities of this young man that stands out, as well as with many of the other signees, is that he is a good student. Reading a blurb that a recruit is a scholar athlete doesn't prove that he possesses good character, but it's a good place to start.

A seemingly undervalued quality of recent recruiting classes under Coach Tressel's leadership is the emphasis on character. I suppose the quality of one's character seldom factors into an athlete's star rating. If we assume that the character quality of this 2010 class is above average, then the overall value of this recruiting class is much greater.

Props to JT and his staff for making it a priority to seek young men who excel on the field and in the classroom. Such student-athletes make better football players and reflect positively on tOSU.

Roby steps up

The competition to start at corner opposite Howard has been viewed as between Dionte Allen and Dominic Clarke. But Roby has put himself firmly in the mix. The redshirt freshman from Peachtree Ridge High School in Suwanee, Ga. - Cameron Heyward's alma mater - is increasingly making plays in spring.

"We see a really bright future for him," safety Orhian Johnson said. "He's learning a lot more, and it's helping him become a better corner."

WOW. I think he must have really had a great senior season. I saw the highlights from halfway thru his Senior year and he looked much improved already from his Junior year. He also moved really far up the Georgia charts after his season, along with the offers from Georgia and Alabama that's gotta say a lot.

Roby looked good in coverage when he was on the field. He looked real tight guarding Williams on a fade route and he was on the field early in the spring game. I'm intrigued to see which guy jumps out and grabs the other corner spot opposite of Howard. Clarke and Roby looked to both have some good moments.
