CBF40's look at '12 recruiting (BP's prediction thread)

I had a question for those in the know: with Dunn and ball in the class of 2012, what differentiates the two from one another? It seems like both are north-south runners without home run threat speed, but what should we be looking forward to from these guys in the future? Both are very talented backs

Sorry for being Captain Hindsight,
But man it sucks that because of the sanctions we struck out on so much talent in state this year! Just looking at that midwest list and knowing how many kids wanted to be Bucks but committed somewhere because of the sanctions really hurts.

Oh well, time to snap back into reality and move on with our present and ever growing class of kids who really want to don S&G.

Kalis and Pittman to me were the biggest losses. It all matters how we replace them next year or if we get Davidson to replace Kalis. If we get players just as good or better it could end up a blessing.

Think there are a number of OL in Ohio with higher upside than Kalis but nobody near as ready. Pittman is a beast though but Washington would offset that and our 2011 DL class was awesome.

A monster 2013 class and we forget about 2012 plus I'm sure some 2012 kids show up and make it better than expected like 2010 with Hankins, Roby, and Reed as 3* already right in the mix. People were down on that class and it's looked pretty good so far while 2009 hasn't been as good as expected yet.

Some of these losses could be blessings. Personally I think Najee Murray is a straight stud and who knows if we can offer him if all the stuff doesn't go down. Same with a Roger Lewis and Tyvis Powell looks to have great upside.

Just hope we finish well. Davidson, Washington, Bradley, Lewis, McDonald, those types would be great and make this class pretty solid.

To me it is more the amount of players...the only specific loss that hurt, to me, was Kalis. He is a sure-fire top 100 tackle, and we really need definite tackles, and more than just one. Not getting Dodson didn't help either. Diamond is a guy that could certainly offset the Kalis defection, as I see the talent levels and skill sets as very similar. Then Strobel, Pittman, Lewis, and Wormley at DE. We didn't need them all, but it hurts to lose every one.

Luckily we brought in a heck of a DL class in Farris, Bennett, Hayes, and Miller. J.T. Moore and Baldwin are also promising from the '10 class, so at least that mitigates the losses somewhat. Get Washington, plus one more, and we will be fine. Top of my wish list is Odenigbo, who is starting to warm up to the Buckeyes as of late. The longer he waits, the more likely he is to become a Buckeye.

The good thing about Kalis is 2013 Ohio OL is loaded. 2013 Ohio DL class doesn't look that way yet. Those kids just have to develop faster.

There are talents like Strobel every year. Pittman was a kid I thought was a unique talent but as said we loaded up in 11 so we good.

This.

If we salvage Odenigbo and Washington to go with Perry, all the other losses wouldn't matter because we were looking to get 3 or 4 out of those guys anyway.

In terms of wide receivers, I'm confident that Philly Brown and T.Y. Williams are going to be big time players, especially Williams. I think we can potentially add a couple of names to provide for future depth.

We just need to find a couple of OTs, which I'm sure we'll be able to identify.

Who's next?

Written by Duane Long | 16 August 2011

The Buckeyes have added a few more players in recent months. Fans regularly ask, who is next?

I think we are alot more clear now about the number for the class. It is looking like the class will be about 20 strong. I highly doubt it is any bigger. Jim Tressel tried to keep the classes a nice balanced 20. I think that is a sound strategy. It fills the needs but keeps the option open for a great player or a need player later in the process. With 13 committed for next year, don't forget Cardale Jones, I will look forward at who I think are good shots to fill those 7 slots.

First, I want to address the class so far, and Luke Fickells job. This is going to be a very good class. It should not be. Luke Fickell is operating with an interim contract. Don't tell me the interim label is off. That is ridiculous. Any coach operating with a 2 year contract, especially a new coach, is an interim coach. Another thing about a first year coach. Nobody knows what kind of coach he is. They don't know how good he is. We don't know what kind of scheme coach Fickell is going to run. We can make an educated guess but we really don't know. That coach Fickell has done this well under trying circumstances is impressive to me.

I posted this in the rumor mill not realizing it was the rumor mill, so here it is again in a more appropriate place.

QB: Cardale Jones

We're definitely done here and in great shape imo.

RB: Warren Ball, Brionte Dunn

Ball is solid. Dunn is mostly solid, but it wouldn't be that surprising if he didn't end up in Columbus depending on what happens with the NCAA. With Derrick Green coming down the line in '13, I think we are done here regardless of what Dunn ends up doing.

WR: Roger Lewis

With Lewis, possibly Epitropoulos depending on where he ends up, and very likely Michael Thomas and Dwayne Stanford, we are done here and in great shape.

Throw in Devin Smith and Evan Spencer and the QBs in Columbus should have plenty of options to throw to for years to come.

TE: Blake Thomas

We have the next Stoneburner lined up (or at least that's the plan) so we're done here.

OL: Jacoby Boren

Even if Elflein projects on the offensive side of the ball, that is two interior linemen.

This will be the major focus of the final months of this recruiting class. The Buckeyes seem to be in decent shape with Nick Davidson and could pull a shocker with Diamond. They also still have a verbal offer out to Jordan Simmons.

If all three of those players fall through, the Buckeyes will have to scramble to fill the class (possibly with McKinley's Kevin Mills or someone not on the radar at the moment).

An offer (or not) to Alex Kozan could be telling for how confident the staff feels with the currently offered players. Kozan looks like another interior linemen, which we don't need, but if the staff is desperate, they might offer simply because they NEED linemen in this class.

DL: Patrick Elflein

Elflein is a project with intangibles through the roof which is nice to see, but he won't contribute right away in Columbus.

The Buckeyes look in great shape with Washington who is the best player in Ohio, so that is nice.

Other than those two, the only other offered DL at the moment (from what I know) is Jordan Washington, who is an extreme long shot at best.

I think the Buckeyes take Elflein and Washington and start looking to 2013.

LB: Josh Perry, Luke Roberts

Who knows where Perry will ultimately end up but his athletic ability is through the roof so he should be exciting wherever that is, Roberts is a solid player but will likely take a few years to develop in Columbus.

It looks like the Buckeyes are putting the rest of their eggs in the Odenigbo basket in 2012, as Rippy has been off the radar for months.

If that doesn't work out and the staff wants another LB (which it appears they do) Monheim or Burger are possibilities.

DB: Tyvis Powell, Najee Murray, Devan Bogard

The '13 class is loaded and this is a solid haul. The Buckeyes are likely still after Bam Bradley and possibly Jordan Diggs. I wouldn't be surprised if one of those players ended up in the class, but if neither came it wouldn't be a problem.

Oh yeah, and throw Demetrious Cox (and maybe Gary Simon) in with Bradley and Diggs as DBs that we may take.

ATH: Frank Epitropoulos

Epitropoulos is an outstanding all-around athlete and a Buckeye legacy, it should be fun to see what he can do in Columbus down the road.

Ricardo Louis, Stefon Diggs, and Nelson Agholor all have verbal offers, but the chances that any of them come to Columbus are extremely unlikely.

My dream finish would be:

QB: Jones
RB: Ball, Dunn
WR: Lewis, M. Thomas, Stanford
TE: B. Thomas
OL: Boren, Davidson, Diamond (I can dream) or plan B guy
DL: Elflein, Washington
LB: Perry, Roberts, Odenigbo
DB: Powell, Murray, Bogard
ATH: Epitropoulos

That puts us at 19 which seems about right (take out Diamond or a plan B guy on the O-Line to get to 18 if we need to).

Somewhat surprised not to see Se'Von Pittman in your dream finish now that it appears he might be making his way to Columbus for a visit soon

As someone pointed out in the rumor mill, Jordan Washington is also a realistic option for DL and far from a long shot like I originally stated.

The issue then becomes scholarship numbers.

I would MUCH rather have Diamond than anyone on the DL, and after Washington anything along the DL is just icing anyway.

Bottom line is the class seems to be shaping up nicely. It won't be the dream class that we all envisioned last February, but it certainly won't be a bad one.

And '13 is already looking pretty damn strong as well.

I think the Buckeyes will build some MAJOR momentum early next year that should carry the team into a dynamite '13 class, which will hopefully keep the Buckeyes rolling without missing a beat after this season.
