Disgraced Former Penn State DC Jerry Sandusky (convicted child molester)

Jerry Sandusky trial: 'Pedobear' character comes to courthouse

An Internet-born character called "Pedobear," which mocks pedophiles or is their mascot, depending on which website you believe, is at the Centre County courthouse this morning, outside the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse trial.

The trial is winding down. The defense is expected to finish its case today. Ex-Penn State coach Sandusky denies allegations that he sexually abused 10 boys over 15 years, all of whom he met through his Second Mile children's charity.

The bear character, meanwhile, was interviewed by some media. Its website is vague about what the bear does exactly, but does point out that it's not for the easily offended.

Jerry Sandusky trial: Doctor testifies Mike McQueary related 'sexual sounds' but would not go into detail

A longtime friend of Mike McQueary's dad testified this morning at Jerry Sandusky's trial that prosecution witness and coach Mike McQueary told him he heard "sexual sounds" coming from a Penn State University shower in 2001, but said Mike McQueary wouldn't elaborate.

"What do you mean?" Jonathan Dranov, a medical doctor, recalls pressing Mike McQueary. "He couldn't go on. He just seemed to get more and more upset."

McQueary earlier testified he saw Sandusky in the shower with a prepubescent boy and heard slapping sounds from the shower of the Lasch Building on Feb. 9, 2001. Sandusky is charged with 51 counts of child molestation, but he maintains his innocence.

Dranov was called as a witness by the defense, which is expected to wrap up its case today.

Dranov said there's no forgetting how agitated Mike McQueary was after his dad called Dranov over to the home about 9 that night. "His voice was trembling. His hands were shaking," Dranov recalled.

Prosecutor Joe McGettigan asked if McQueary was the type of person who was easily shaken. Dranov, whose known McQueary since he was a boy, said no.

Jerry Sandusky trial: Lancaster County man describes his interviews with police, time with Sandusky

Jerry Sandusky's defense lawyers continued to call former Second Mile children to the stand this morning, including a Lancaster County man who recalled investigators telling him he could get in trouble if he lied about his interactions with Sandusky.

David Hilton, now 21, said nothing inappropriate ever happened in the more than 50 times he stayed at the Sandusky home. Hilton, who said his parents are both deaf, called Sandusky a 'father figure' and said Sandusky got him a gym membership and helped him get a job.

Under questioning by attorney Karl Rominger, Hilton said he spoke with police investigators three or four times.

He said there were no issues the first time, but during the second and third times, "I felt like they wanted me to say something that wasn't true. They asked me the same questions to see if I'd slip up and give a different answer."

During cross examination by prosecutor Joe McGettigan, Hilton said no one every told him what to say and that McGettigan has told him to "always tell the truth." At one point, he called McGettigan a "cool guy," eliciting laughter from the courtroom.

Chambersburg native Chad Rexrode also described Sandusky as a "father figure," during and after his time in the Second Mile when he was 10-15 years old.

Rexrode met Sandusky after writing him as part of a third-grade project at his State College elementary school to write a letter to famous people. He wrote to players and coaches at Penn State. Some responded. Sandusky was one, he said.

Rexrode, 35 and living in Pittsburgh, said his father left his family when he was a year old and Sandusky would check in with him to see how he was keeping up in school. He said he stayed overnight at the Sandusky home many times and slept in the basement.

Nothing inappropriate happened during those visits, Rexrode said. "He'd say it's time for bed, let's go downstairs, show me the [bedroom] and where to take a shower in the morning."

Rexrode said he testified today because he "wanted to thank (Sandusky) for everything he's done for me and other people."

Defense must have finally figured out all he can do is clamp his own leg-irons if he does.

He said in the Costas interview that he doesn't molest all the children that he has ever been in the same room with. That seems right in line with the defense parading his non-molested acquaintances to the stand to testify that he hasn't molested them. I don't see why the wouldn't want him on the stand to further confirm that point.

I believe the prosecutor went through the process of authenticating the entire Costas tape as rebuttal testimony. We'll soon see if the judge allows that portion of the unaired interview tape play.

And the defense unveiled its own opener shocker, saying Sandusky will take the witness stand. In an unexpected and aggressive move, attorney Joe Amendola said Sandusky will explain himself directly to the jury. That decision came as a surprise to prosecutors, who expected to hear Sandusky's words only through the testimony of alleged victims.

Sandusky cannot be forced to testify even though his attorney promised the jury from the outset that Jer would explain himself directly. The jury cannot infer guilt from Jer's failing to follow through and testify but it can call into question the credibility of all of these glowing testimonials from the defense witnesses. Amendola should have never made that promise.
