he also forgot to mention that Michigan's glory years were built on the backs of Ohioans defecting to play for UM. Ohio HS coaches in the 1980s and 1990s actively steered kids to play for UM. Fremont, Warren Harding, Canton McKinley all come to mind as being decidely pro-Michigan during that era. They may have changed since JT arrived, but perhaps there is a reason for that - JT is a great program leader and RR is not.

Well at least the linked Blogger isn't trying to manufacture fake recruiting violations like that slanted mainstream media.

MSU never offered. It will be interesting as to why the two in-state schools didn't want Hankins. but tOSU did.

Because the two Canadian schools in question are much better at talent evaluation than the staff in Columbus. Duh!

I believe the comparative on field success of the three schools proves that pretty definitively.

I for one am glad Mr. Hankin`s picked tOSU.....we need some quality depth there and he has a big upside. Hope to see him come in hungry and compete for PT right away. Our staff does a great job on the DLine. Heacock is a proven coach. Hated to miss Floyd but I take a kid like Hankin`s who could very well be the better choice when all is said and done, it wouldn`t surprise me at all. Go Bucks

My thinking when I read that blog was similar. OSU likely communicated to big John that he had the ability to play for the Bucks, but needed to show his seriousness by getting his house in order(conditioning, academics, whatever). We saw this same scenario with Shaq Rowell. Similiar actions in the Eric Howard case. Build a relationship, address the question-marks, and follow through when the recruit comes thru. That seems to be a very honorable way of doing business.

With regard to UM, if the BOren and others stories are close to accurate, it isn't hard to imagine how his early recruitment was handled. No way his fata$$ was could be good enough to be a Michigan man. Perhaps their negative tactics are meant to motivate. Perhaps it is just small men justifying themselves by tearing someone else down. It got complicated for RR when Hankins actually did the work to turn himself into a big time prospect. But RR hadn't done the work to build the relationship.

Great that Hankins is a Buckeye. I hope that he can be as successful as guys like Big Vern and Pepper Johnson. Guys that UM also mishandled.

I believe he was up to 330lbs this year, no?

I think he was reported as being kinda sloppy at that weight though.

Just think about Hankins/Simon on the 4-3 in a year or two, you got the plugger like a Casey Hampton, and speed/stregnth combo of Simon, like a jacked Suh... that's just frightening if it happens.

I had forgotten that John and Gholston were teammates. That's quite a defensive line tandem.

Best recruiting experience : The trip to Florida. It was the weather and all, the atmosphere, the fans. It was their last home game against Florida State.

Worst recruiting experience : It was probably Michigan. It was all right but it wasn't what I thought it would be. It didn't seem like they were trying hard to get me. I guess they thought since I was from Michigan they'd get me.

Would you like to see an early signing period ? To me, it doesn't matter. I guess it would be good to have two.

Would you have signed early ? I would have for my dad. The coaches started to wear on him.

Why not MSU ? I liked it for a minute. They were already set for defensive tackles so they really didn't want me.

Why not U-M ? It was like I was the last thing on their list. I didn't get an offer from them until other schools offered.
