DT Johnathan "Big Hank" Hankins (Dallas Cowboys)

Good news for the Buckeyes, but it is absolutely astonishing being a non-student athlete and knowing that these athletes get in with scores 6-7 points lower than what you must have to get in as just a student. Says a lot about what you have to do to not only have a good football team, but also compete with those schools where those are normal scores.

Shadow of himself

At 335 pounds, freshman defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins might not be the biggest man on campus, but he is the heaviest man on the football team. He weighed over 350 last year when he was in high school in Detroit. Then he went on a conditioning program that made him one of the more sought-after defensive tackles in the country.

"I just wanted to move quicker, get more explosive off the ball," Hankins said. "It's not necessary to have all that weight on you.

"I feel better. I'm still trying to lose a few more pounds (he's shooting for 320), but right now I'm moving real well. And I'm stronger."

His trimmed-down heft might help him earn playing time in short-yardage and goal-line situations. There is no one else his size on the defensive line.

Besides Hyde, I think i've seen more people talk about "BIG" John Hankins more than anyone. That's a relief because we really needed some added depth at DT. I just watched some of the practice film by a news station and woah on one play Hankins just killed some offensive lineman and made the tackle. Seems to have some issues with stamina but in this heat that's to be expected! Excited bout Johnathan.

I agree that if Hankins is ready, then it will really help with depth. This D-line has a chance to go down as one of tOSU's best ever. The starting 4 are definitely studs, but we lost a lot of depth last year, oh hello Captain Obvious.

I think Gladiator Goebel will definitely be in the mix, and once again the coaches showed that if the frosh are ready, they'll play, ala Simon last year. As Coop used to say, "if a dog'll bite, he'll bite as a pup." This is a good sign that Hankins may contribute as a "pup"

OSU practice was on BTN last night and this young man is going to be a star. I was thinking with his size and losing some pounds maybe, another Big Daddy Wilkinson because, thats what he did plus, the grades. He already has great feet and he kept getting pressure on the QB's and he was even getting double teamed. After getting all happy about him they, had Heyward in for an interview and all he was talking about was Hankins being another Big Daddy cause of his size and fast feet. So I didnt feel like my dreaming was just a wish. Heyward was giving the o-line a lot of respect so that looks great for both lines and was very positive about John Simon calling him an all american before , he's done.

I was a little concerned about depth at the floppy belly position, not anymore. Dex is very solid, but not typically found in the backfield, he does frequently occupy 2 OL's which serves it's purpose. Hankins is gonna add that plus penetration and he's bigger, quicker etc.

I'd like to see him around the same weight through out his career here, however an adjustment in body composition is needed. I think dropping 15-20lb's of fat and replacing it with 15 lb's of muscle should do.

As camp progresses he will lose a little weight and his stamina will greatly increase. I really hope he gets some reps in the opener to show the coaches he's ready for some time against Miami.

Bennett, Simon, Hankins, Farris all rotating in the next few years along with the DE's, the future is bleak for opposing QB's.
