Game Thread Game One: #1 Ohio State 35, Northern Illinois 12 (9/2/06)

While that is a completely stupid statement, I just watched all the Ginn videos that was on your video clips forum, and we better not even think to kick it to Ginn ever.

We need to stick Bradley Pruitt (and someone else) on him in the pass game also, because he will run right by either of the Hansbro twins.

G-Force,

You claim to know so much about the Buckeyes but you obviously don't. In Jim Tressel's tenure the Buckeyes have beaten alot of teams equal or better than NIU with little more than defense, special teams and field position. That's seemingly been Tressel's game plan on numerous occasions and it's worked more than not. A stupid statement? Hardly!

It doesn't matter who you stick on Ginn. That person will be up shit creek without a paddle. It's academic. NIU has no answer. You and I both know it. Also, WR Tony Gonzalez is just about as fast as Ted Ginn Jr. I can remember talk of Gonzalez running 4.3 40's during his recruitment if I'm not mistaken. Tony can really go get the ball too. Sneaky fast! I doubt you guys have anybody that can realistically stay with him either.

Well, since you are the only NIU fan here so far and some of my fellow Buckeye fans are afraid that any further challenge to you might cause you to take your ball and go home, I'll just have to step back, zip my lip and await September's inevitable result - a dominating Buckeye win.

Is G-Force the only NIU fan on the planet earth or just the only one that thinks NIU can win? G-force, if you know anyone else, feel free to invite them over. Don't cost nothing. If any other NIU fans are already lurking then why not sign up and join the discussion.

Oh. I bet I know why they'd rather stay in the shadows. The reason is because they have the opposite of confidence in their team's prospects. They may have already mailed this one in. Maybe the NIU fan base at large is wiser than I thought.

For now, G-force, I'll bow to the powers that be and let you have your little thread. Feel free to continue flaunting your Garrett Wolfe cultish fixation. Go ahead and make some more Wolfe vs. Pittman meaningless comparisons. I gotten the hint. Your membership on buckeye planet is more important than mine. How dare I challenge the mighty G-force! If it wasn't for G-force there wouldn't be much of a NIU game thread so please don't scare him away!

Fine. Tell us one more time how good mighty mouse Garrett Wolfe is and how he's gonna run all over the poor little inexperienced Buckeye defense. Those poor young Buckeye defenders have probably never seen an opponent with the obvious physical prowess of the Big Bad Wolfe. Pa-leez!

I was referring to punts more then kicks.

Kicks probably won't matter because we won't socre right?
Now that's a pretty good come-back.

So, how good - as in accurate and deep - is your punter?

Is it still this fellow?

<table class="statstable" align="center"><tbody><tr><th>Rank</th><th>Player</th><th>Pos</th><th>Cl</th><th>Gm</th><th>Punt</th><th>Yds</th><th>Avg</th><th>Puntgm</th></tr></tbody></table><table class="statstable" align="center"><tbody><tr><td class="crailbg">82</td><td class="crailbg">Andy Dittbenner, Northern Ill.</td><td class="crailbg">P</td><td class="crailbg">FR</td><td class="crailbg">12</td><td>54</td><td>2083</td><td> 38.57</td><td> 4.50</td></tr></tbody></table>
(Hey spad - check out 3yards memo :wink2:)

Come on over.

Sorry most of our fans would rahter talk to each other, then talk to fans like you who have never seen us play and think Ohio State is an unbeatbale machine.

What'd you expect me to do? Come over here and be like uhhh yeah you guys rock, we suck. I bow down. Uhh yeah I am honored to be playing you. Hell no. When I see my team being talked about by people, for the most part, have no idea who we are or how we play, I am going to join in.

I have seen NIU play. I watched your game against scUM last year because I was curious about the scUM defense and I knew the Buckeyes would be playing NIU this year. You know what. You guys were playing scUM at the best possible time you could have. I watched that game and my thoughts weren't "hey look at this MAC team putting up ~450 yds on Michigan. They must be pretty darn good." My thoughts were more like this, "My god scUM's defense is really really terrible."

For alot of years scUM was the gold standard in the Big Ten. They were the shit (thanks Coop). Not anymore. The problem is that alot of people around the country still don't realize that a change has taken place or is still in the process of taking place.

Alot of your (G-force's) confidence in the upcoming game vs. tOSU comes from NIU's showing against scUM last year I bet. You and your NIU buddies must have watched that game and as NIU statistically hung with scUM somehow you must have thought that you had arrived. You must have thought that in some way you guys from the MAC could be on the same level as the Big Ten as a whole. You guys had went on the road and made a really good showing against the supposed "pillar program" of the Big Ten. Wrong! This is the year that you face the Big Ten's pillar.

I can assure you that this year's season opener for you will be positively horrific compared to last year. Your NIU players and coaches have no clue as to what National Championship caliber college football is all about. That's what your facing in game 1. I'm not saying the Buckeyes are a shoe in to win the National Championship this year because it'll be a huge challenge. I'm just saying that the Buckeyes are a hell of alot closer to it than that ridiculous scUM team you guys opened up against last year. The challenge the Buckeyes face in winning a title isn't coming from NIU.

Come over to your site? What's the point. It's not worth my time. I said before that NIU is little more than a small conference also ran. NIU might not even win the MAC this year! I don't see NIU as much of a challenge to be honest. The Buckeyes have bigger fish to fry. This is a warm up game. To go to your site would show that in some way I view the NIU program as a threat to tOSU. I don't. I wouldn't think of paying you guys that sort of respect.

NIU just needs to come to the shoe, take their fucking spanking and then go away so the Bucks can start concentrating on the team that we should be concentrating on. G-force, you are right about one thing. I do see the Buckeyes as an unbeatable machine. Especially against MAC teams! That about sums it up.

So you tell them to cover over to your site, but you won't come over to our's? What we aren't "worthy" of your time? My confidence doesn't come from the Michigan game last year, it comes from a history of playing well against BCS teams.

2005:
@ Michigan: L 17-33 (game should have been much closer)
@ Northwestern: L 37-38

2004:
@ Maryland: L 20-23
@ Iowa State L 41-48

2003:
No. 24 (thats what the finished the season) W 20-13
@ Alabama W 19-16
Iowa State W 24-16

So in our last 7 games against BCS opponents we are 3-4 with a -11 scoring differential in 7 games. So we are a school with a history of playing teams tough, a coach who knows what it takes to spring an upset, and the most talented team in school history, with argueably the best player in school history.

I hope everyone of your playerrs feel the way you do. Maryland (who was ranked 13 at the time we playerd them) played @ Florida State the next week when we beat them. You guys play Texas the week after, so I hope you guys think we are a "warm up" for Texas. If you do get ready for a rude awakening.

However unlike you Tressel isn't a dumbass. He knows our history, he knows we have alot of talent, which is why I think you guys win the game. If he can't get your players not to look ahead to Texas, then the outcome could be different.

So, you honestly think that our D will give up 24 points? Since 2002 our D has givin up 24 points 8 times in 51 games. 2 of those times were in bowl games and one of those was the NC. All of them were against offenses that are MUCH better than NIU. Most of the offenses that we see year in year out are better than NIU. One thing that you can count on under JT is that our D will be very good. It always is. I have a feeling that this game is going to look a LOT like the game against Northwestern last year. My hope is that it looks like the game against Illinois though.

G-Force. I can respect the enthusiasm that you have for your team. You do them proud as a fan. I just think that your optimism is fueled by stats that do not accurately reflect what they are going to face in this game. If your boy Wolfe gets 100 yards, then he touches the ball 30+ times. If he touches the ball that many times then he is going to be touching it almost every play and then NIU is one dimensional and they lose badly.

None of those teams are any comparison to what NIU will be facing this year as:

in 2005 neither scUm or NW finished in the top 25.

in 2004 again, neither Maryland or Iowa State finished in the top 25.

in 2003 again, neither Alabama (actually 4-9) or Iowa State (who won 2 games that season) finished in the top 25.

So, yes in 3 years you have played 7 BCS teams, one team in the top 25.

This year we are talking about potentially the pre-season #1 team in the country (and don't tell me it is the same as scUM last year, b/c they always get a better than they deserve ranking in the pre-season).

So before you insult posters here on BP, just think about your argument.
