Game Thread Game One: #1 Ohio State 35, Northern Illinois 12 (9/2/06)

I've read some of G-Force's posts here, and they sound very much like those of the Miami fans before the first game last season (claiming that we don't give them any respect, they're better than we think, we've never seen them play, we think we'll win just b/c we're OSU, blah, blah, blah). I'm also reminded of how we pounded the tar out of them and made them look like they didn't even belong on the same field as us; curisouly enough, I didn't hear such smack talk afterwards.

While I've read some of G-Force's posts, I don't have the time (or the interest, frankly speaking, for a MAC team) to go back, read them all, and comment on their absurdities. I will say, however, that you're not giving the people on this site enough respect, G. I watched several of NIU's games last year (e.g., scUM, BG, Akron), and I'm sure many other people on this site have as well. Pardon us if we're not impressed by a running back who might be able to run for 250 yards, but his team still loses, as you guys did against Akron.

Oh yeah -- OSU 38 NIU 10 (and that 10 comes in scrub time, much like how we shutout Miami until the very end of the game last year).

2005:
@ Michigan: L 17-33 (game should have been much closer)
@ Northwestern: L 37-38

2004:
@ Maryland: L 20-23
@ Iowa State L 41-48

2003:
No. 24 (thats what the finished the season) W 20-13
@ Alabama W 19-16
Iowa State W 24-16

Lumping all "BCS" teams together might be a useful oversimplification when commenting on trends; but I'm not sure if it's a completely valid basis for predicting the outcome of a single game.

Which of the teams on this list were equivalent to what tOSU is expected to be this year? (Top 5 by most experts)
  • Michigan in September? Are you kidding? They've lost a game every September for 6 straight seasons, including 2 last year. They are a notoriously slow-starting team under Lllloyd.
  • Maryland? Really? They've improved under Refrigerator Ralph, but they have not been in danger of cracking the top 5.
  • Iowa State and Northwestern? Apart from being BCS teams, what exactly do they have in common with Ohio State?
  • Alabama in '03? You were one of nine teams to beat them that year. Congratulations.
You're not up against a run-of-the-mill BCS team. You're up against what almost everyone believes is a top 5 team. Not an over-rated Michigan team; a real top 5 team. What part of your record should we use to determine how you'll do against us?

The more relevant record is ours; as we have played MAC schools when we were a top 5 team. We don't always blow them out; and it is reasonable to believe that we won't blow NIU out. But we very, very rarely lose; and the games are very rarely actually in doubt in the last few minutes. That is what we are basing our expectations on.

EDIT:

HundedLane beat me to it. He made exactly the same point on the last page.

So, you honestly think that our D will give up 24 points? Since 2002 our D has givin up 24 points 8 times in 51 games. 2 of those times were in bowl games and one of those was the NC. All of them were against offenses that are MUCH better than NIU. Most of the offenses that we see year in year out are better than NIU. One thing that you can count on under JT is that our D will be very good. It always is. I have a feeling that this game is going to look a LOT like the game against Northwestern last year. My hope is that it looks like the game against Illinois though.

G-Force. I can respect the enthusiasm that you have for your team. You do them proud as a fan. I just think that your optimism is fueled by stats that do not accurately reflect what they are going to face in this game. If your boy Wolfe gets 100 yards, then he touches the ball 30+ times. If he touches the ball that many times then he is going to be touching it almost every play and then NIU is one dimensional and they lose badly.

The defense might be a little shaky since its week one with an inexperienced defense.

But look on the offensive side of things G-Force, theres is NO way that you can match up with our speed. I wouldn't be surprised if we put up 50+ on you.

I respect the way you stepping up for your team like that, but think of that speed.

However unlike you Tressel isn't a dumbass.

It seems that personal insults are just about all you have left to cling to in this discussion. Thank you. I shall now consider myself victorious in this war of words between you and I.

You are right that Tressel isn't a dumbass. I will admit that he knows alot more about football than I do. He knows alot more about NIU than I do as well. That is what you should be worried about. That's why I know NIU can't win. There isn't one facet of this game where NIU has an advantage. Not one. Not on offense. Not on defense. Not on special teams. Not in team speed. Not in size, strength and conditioning. Not in big game experience. Most importantly, not in coaching. You can bet the Buckeyes will be ready. You can bet that NIU will fold early like a cheap suit. Remember how quiet is was at the Big House. Just wait!

So you tell them to cover over to your site, but you won't come over to our's? What we aren't "worthy" of your time? My confidence doesn't come from the Michigan game last year, it comes from a history of playing well against BCS teams.

That's pretty much how I feel. Please be assured that you read my post correctly. I feel NIU is inferior to Ohio State. Always has been and always will be. Does that bother you G-force? Listen. NIU fans like you are the ones seeking respect for your program. Buckeye fans for the most part don't care what fans from MAC teams think. The MAC is like the Big Ten's little brother. Little brother strives to be like big brother but big brother is bigger and stronger and always seems to win. Little brother always gets left behind while big brother goes and runs with the other big boys.

Your team is the challenger and the underdog not mine. I don't cater to fans of inferior teams. Any discussion about the NIU game that I take part in will be right here on Buckeye Planet. If you and your buddies want respect, come right here and get it. Like I said before it don't cost nothing but still they hide in the shadows. Atleast they know what's good for them! Their mommas didn't raise no fools! Maybe you should go back and have a chat with your momma!

You go ahead and consider yourself the winner, the rest of us will see you as a loser.

If by BG you mean Bowling Green, we didn't play them last year.

I can see how much you watch us.

It doesn't cost anything to join our site either, but you won't join it because "we aren't worthy of your time." That is rediculous. You keep acting like an arrogant homer, and fans like you are why Ohio State fans are given a bad name. I respect your program, but I certainly don't respect you. I don't mind it when people actually present stats to tell me how good you are, but when people like you just brush us off without even thinking about anything simply because you are Ohio State, it just makes you look arrogant and ignorant.

Nobody will earn respect for our program on buckeyeplanet, we'll do that September 2nd like we have for the past 5 years.

not to be an ass but when you are Ohio State you have to do prove yourself on the field with us that you are worthy of our fan bases respect. So until September 2nd you prolly won't get that much respect as a program. Look at Marshall, and Nc State. I believe our fans gave them a standing ovation after they took us to the wire. We'll give credit where credit is due, but what has Northern Illinois done to prove that, Nothing. I actually think you guys could have a chance against us if you get to half time with a close score, but lets face it you don't have the resources we do. Bucks Roll in this one.

Sorry, you are right. I don't know what I was thinking--it was W. Michigan. I remembered watching you guys pound someone the day before Thanksgiving.

Please stop with the name calling already, though. It's very childish. And for what it's worth, coming to our site and using obscenities against our members doesn't exactly help you gain any respect.
Oh alright thats fine.

Yeah sorry, don't worry they will stop.
