Mirror Lake Jump (official thread)

Here's some info from the tOSU library website:

library.osu.edu

When did students start jumping into Mirror Lake?
Answer: Jumping into Mirror Lake is not a relatively new idea, as some may believe. Students have been wading its waters since the early part of the 1900s. Several student organizations, including Bucket and Dipper, often initiated students by dunking, or throwing them into the Lake. Other students have jumped into the water willingly, although in 1970, one student reportedly caught tetanus from the lake's polluted waters. Even though Mirror Lake has been cleaned several times since then, jumping or wading in the Lake is not encouraged.

From 89 thru 95 I never saw any of this jumping in to the lake business.....

I hope you are joking. I was there 93-98 and saw if plenty of times. The whole phantom band thing leading people to mirror lake, people toilet papering the campus...of course there was never a mass jumping into the lake. It was only a few idiots. Most of the time the temp was near freezing and only people totally tanked jumped into the lake. I know we always tried to talk people into it.

Question for the current Buck students...is there still a kegs and eggs spot? It died somewhat when Papa Joe's "accidentally" burnt down. Other bars tried to rivive it but it was never the same. Man those were some rough halftimes...sobering up with a hangover in the middle of the game. Nothing was worse than the game where my buddies and I drank all night, stayed up for kegs and eggs, and went to the game only to see Shawn Springs slip on a slant pattern and lose a close one. That was one of the worst days of my life...I don't think I could have felt worse emotionally and physically at about 4PM that day.

I went down to watch everyone in 1994. I didn't jump in, but had a lot of fun watching everyone else and singing OSU songs, as well as "I don't give a da-n for the whole state of -ichigan.

As I re-e-ber, it was on a Thursday night.

That's interesting to hear. Last year was my first time to it, and just about everyone there was in the lake going insane. The was a chant of "Fuck Michigan" going on for like 3 minutes straight, with everyone jumping around. It was fun, but I recommend shoes, and being pretty much hammered.
