NFL Replacement refs...What if?

What is referee 84 doing? The still pic looks like he is in the process of waving incomplete. I guess he could be getting ready to go up and down for a touchback...

In any event if you fix replay it is not an issue.

Incomplete is not waved above the ref's head, it's in front of his body. He was doing a version of the touchback signal, I believe.

He is signaling to stop the clock, which is supposed to come before the signal for touchback.

That's right, it's a two-part signal for the touchback.

Here's a better shot of him making the clock-stop signal:

Yes, because the normal league referees never [censored] up a call....And they certainly never [censored] up a replay review.....:roll1:

If you're really suggesting that the number of screwed up calls isn't drastically increased (and therefore the integrity of the game is compromised) with replacement officials, then you need to pay closer attention to what's been going on. Because you may just be the only person in America with that opinion.

And as long as you are okay with paying more for tickets, concessions, parking, TV. etc. then by all means let's give these guys more money or a pension for this. You know the owners aren't going to eat this on the long run.

Fine by me. I'd rather pay a few more dollars for a legitimate product than a few less for an inferior one. Maybe that's just me, though.

Funny thing - it took 10 MINUTES to review the call...and they STILL got it wrong!

:slappy:

EDIT: The only frustrating thing for me of this whole situation with the refs is that slimy bastage Pete Carroll was the beneficiary of two ref jobs (timeout, last night's game)

I doubt that you have any comparison statistics to legitimize your statement. I also doubt that I am the only person amongst millions who watch football that feel this way. I am not saying they aren't missing calls, I am just saying that calls get missed and interpreted differently by different folks and different referees. I saw missed calls in the games I watched, but you always see missed holding (even in the OSU game this week) and receivers whining about PI and holding.

My concern is the lack of control of the games that the replacement referees have. The players are and will continue to push the boundaries.

Me personally, I would rather see the players and coaches refuse to go on the field until it is resolved. I know they can't, but I would love to see it. This notion that fans should constantly bear the brunt of the players salaries and now the referees salaries and pretty soon yada, yada, yada, group get's disheartening. Further the notion that fans can legitimately quit watching and boycott the games and hurt the owners pocketbook is just ridiculous.

Then he ran around with his fist in the air like his team just won the Super Bowl or something.

Of course the regular refs miss calls too, such as holding and PI. The replacements are missing those too I'm sure. ON TOP OF THAT though, they are also missing simple procedural things like down & distance, when to start and stop the clock, how many yards to mark off for a penalty, nearly applying a penalty to the wrong team, failing to establish a call on the field before going to replay, allowing too many challenges, taking the 2-minute warning at the wrong time, etc.

Those are all things that I have seen at one point or another over the course of three weeks. The regular refs don't miss those things very often. If you think it's just a different approach that balances out, I wonder how much better the replacements are at spotting holding and PI calls than the regulars to tip the scales. You seem to be noticing that sort of thing, so I await examples.

It's not a matter or interpretation, and no statistics are needed (which is a good thing since you probably can't provide any to support your argument either). These replacement refs are demonstrably bad, and no matter what you think of the previous standard of officiating in the NFL, the replacements do not come close to it.

Regular refs didn't mark a punt downed at the 4 at the 12. Regular refs know when there's a 10 second runoff and when there isn't. Regular refs know when calls are reviewable and when they aren't. Regular refs know what possession is and what it isn't. Forget PI and holding. Take the non-subjective calls, and they are fucking those up royally as well. That is the difference.
