Nick Saban: 'The Big Ten is a really good conference'

USATSI_7878103.jpg

In case you needed further proof that college football coaches aren't all that different from presidential candidates, just take a look at Nick Saban's recent trip to Ohio.

Saban appeared at a fundraiser outside Cincinnati Wednesday night, and after speaking for 25 minutes he took questions from the audience. It didn't take long for one of those questions to be about the Big Ten catching up to the SEC, and that's when Saban went into "vote for me" mode.

“I think we have a little bit of an advantage when it comes to the recruiting base we have in the Southeast,” said Saban, according to Cleveland.com. “But I think the Big Ten is a really good conference. And I want to be quoted on that.”

However the reporter thinks the B1G stinks.....

Seriously, I say this as somebody born and raised in Chicago who has spent their entire life following Big Ten football: the Big Ten is not "really good." It's not nearly as bad as some folks want to believe it is, but it's not quite really good, either. If ranking the five power conferences I'd have the Big Ten settling into fifth. Not miles behind fourth place, but with work to do to catch up.

Saban's new deal: $7M per through 2020

A full six months ago, Bill Battle and Nick Saban met to hammer out the details on a new contract. Six months since Saban and Battle came to terms on the deal, the contract has yet to be placed before the university's Board of Trustees compensation committee for approval. The holdup can be traced back to multiple reasons, Battle told AL.com on Tuesday, but none are the cause for concern. ... Alabama has yet to provide any specifics on the contract other than calling it "a new long-term agreement" when the news broke during the evening of Dec. 13. AL.com and the Tuscaloosa Newsconfirmed through anonymous sources that the deal runs through the 2020 season and increases Saban's annual salary to an average of $7 million per year.

Nick Saban lobs a ‘kiss my ass’ when asked about Pat White Corvette allegations

OK, this is gonna take a not-so-quick, get-you-up-to-speed moment or two.

Earlier this week, Alabama running back Derrick Henry posted a picture on Twitter of himself standing in front of what appears to be an extremely nice and relatively new Dodge Challenger, with a comment of “everybody meet my new baby.” Because the unveiling of an expensive car involved a player from the SEC in general and Alabama specifically, it of course set off a maelstrom of “CHEATERS!!!” accusations across the vast expanses of the Internet.
One of those caught up in the maelstrom? Former West Virginia and current CFL quarterback Pat White, who decided to post the following to his Facebook page Wednesday:

Nick Saban, who was the head coach at LSU at the time of White’s recruitment and is, coincidentally or not, a native of Fairmont, WV, was asked by a media member about White’s “accusations” during a Crimson Tide Caravan event in Nashville. His response?

Nick Saban not happy when I asked about Pat White's claim. "Kiss my a$$, do we not have anything else to talk about?"

Alright. He got the car. You caught us, "what difference at this point does it make?" Now do we not have something else to talk about?

Loved his reply actually.

Agreed, but mainly because he wasn't even the coach at Alabama when Pat White was being recruited. If the facebook post had implied that White turned down an offer (and a car) from Saban (regardless of where he coached), that would be a different matter. But seriously, does this guy assume that the old coach (was that Mike Shula?) tells the new coach about all of the recruiting violations he has done in the past 4+ years when he's introducing him to the team?

"This is Joe, cornerback. I gave him a car. This is Reggie, guard. We pay half his rent. This is Carl, quarterback. We built his dad a church. This is Wilbur, punter. Oh, and here's a list of all the guys we gave tattoos to."

Yeah, those would be some interesting conversations. But you are right, this one is particularly silly since Saban wasn't around when the White thing would've gone down.

Just seems like a pointless question by a reporter given the circumstances. So I like the response.
