Ohio State Athletic Program Violations

Yes, going to school for free is available to the general public ... for those that are smart enough or musically gifted enough or whatever it happens to be that a sponsoring organization and University see those individuals as an asset to the institution. Carrying a 4.0+ GPA in advanced high school courses can get you a free ride just like carrying a football will. The problem is the book worms generally don't make highlight videos of themselves destroying a calc final and don't seek scholarships like athletes do.

The real question is can those 4.0 students barrow your pen?

Archie Griffin participated in the same violation in the video. He is a former Associate AD. Was his act one of utter incompetence too?

I'm no fan of Gene Smith, and I don't disagree with your overall characterization of what he brings to the job. I just don't think it applies in this particular instance.

I guess the problem is that I don't expect GS to know the book backwards and forwards, but as a former head of NCAA compliance to have a pretty good "ballpark" picture of what things might be borderline. Within his department though, there is an entire office of people paid to know or find out these things. The incompetence doesn't lie in not knowing every bit of ncaa minutia. It's creating the video without having the common sense to pick up the phone and have your compliance office green light it first.

The coach texting the gate number to the parents or the players paying for that cab out of their own pockets are spur of the moment things where there is no time to get any clarification. Gene Smith's situation is completely different. He could have had that video cleared in advance. That he didn't think to do so, speaks volumes to not only the guy's general day-to-day lack of competence but more disturbingly a trend of ingrained belief in his own infallibility (most disastrously observed in the case of the bowl ban) that borders on the level of a personality disorder.

Had Archie been the Athletic Department official in charge at the time, I would be every bit as critical. Then again, Archie isn't a domer so the issue of his always believing that he's absolutely correct and never in need of any outside counsel would probably never come up. You can take the domer out of Notre Dame, but you can never take the Notre Dame out of the domer.

I'm going to have to disagree with this part of your post (and only this part).

The pursuit of academic schollies is actually pretty cut throat and kids do all kinds of crazy shit to score a few extra points with review boards. Even 20 years ago I remember kids who had sent in videos of themselves like it was for an MTV Real World audition.

Just more BS that's able to be avoided at the private schools like Miami, ND, and USC, since they're not subject to FOIA requests.

The only ones that were noteworthy to me are the recruiting video (not having his own staff review it for approval is an egregious error for an AD that oversaw all of 2010/2011); and the one involving Paulus.

I guess Urban should have just given Spence a thumbs up, instead of saying 'Good luck'.

And I would suggest Archie should have known better as well, but it's clear that the AD was in a better position to know whether the video was legal or not.

While the title of this thread is 100% factual, gives me the impression of an overreaction because of the emphasis on the number of reported violations and your reaction in the post that followed.

I guess people will read factual headlines whatever they want to justify their anger. Not my problem.

FIFY. I'm the one who said there's nothing of substance to the violations. You're the one who called for Gene Smith to be fired. Who exactly is the angry one in this discussion?

A little from both sides...

The NCAA rulebook needs to be thrown away and started from scratch with a few retired presidents, AD's, coaches, and a few ex players. There is a need for rules but some are just stupid and pointless.

At the same time any rule that is on the book needs to be followed by the schools, its a slippery slope.... rule A who cares if you ignore it, but where is that line between stupid rule and rule that has a legit reason.

Overall though.... there needs to be an even hand among enforcement with all schools, and sadly that isn't the case..... *cough* SECheat *cough*

I understand the need for rules I really do. I just also happen to think if that rule infringes upon common courtesy or manners..well then it shouldn't be NCAA violation. I'd like to say all this nonsense amuses me...but it doesn't it's really rather annoying. All summer kids from other universities are getting busted IRL as opposed the the NCAA fantasy land one and it seems it's barely worth any kind of national attention..But fuck if a Buckeye says "Good Luck" or texts "Gate 7" that shit is a totally reprehensible act.

And these trolls...SEC, scUM, and any others..with the "Urban is cheating again"...and "cHOke is a great coach doing things the right way"...is enough to cause serious nausea.

On a lighter note..I'm one day closer to seeing the Ass-Whoopings and retribution kick in.

Read better. I said this was part and parcel of a continuing disconnect between Gene Smith and a proper understanding of NCAA rules and regulations. You don't think he should be fired. Fine. That's a subjective argument.
