OL Nicholas Petit-Frere (1st Team All American, Tennessee Titans)

Damn they have him ranked the 7th best OT in the draft, that's 2nd or even high 3rd round. Talking about a freaking steal. Abover average in all aspects of his game but no areas that are "exceptional" according to the rankings. I'd love to have him down in South Beach and so would Tua

So. Stud turned the #1 hs OT recruit in America, who he didn’t land, into the #7 tackle in the draft?

The amazing thing to me is all the people who used to defend him.
Not you best effort.
Frye is an upgrade. We are all excited he’s here.
But NPF will go in rd 1 or 2.
Hardly an example of coaching negligence regardless of his HS accolades.

A better argument v Stud is what is in the pipeline for ‘23.

Agreed. I’m happy to have Frye, but only one of the #1 OT’s from the 2008-2017 class was a top 10 pick. Here’s a list of those #1 OT’s and where they were drafted. Round/pick.

Matt Kalil - 1/4

Mason Walters - Not Drafted

Seantrel Henderson - 7/237

Cyrus Kouadjio - 2/44

DJ Humphries - 1/24

Laremy Tunsil - 1/13

Cam Robinson - 2/34

Martez Ivey - UFA

Greg Little - 2/37

Alex Leatherwood - 1/17

Some context....
  • First, these are draft projections (and Todd McShay projections, at that), not actual draft picks. The actual draft order could be very different. We haven't even had the combine or private workouts yet. If NPF tests well (and he should), then he could move up the board. In any event, NPF projects as a first-round pick, not some Day Three bust.
  • Second, the prospects listed ahead of NPF come from three separate recruiting classes - 2017, 2018, and 2019 - and were ranked at three different positions - OT, OG, and TE. NPF was the #1 OT prospect in the class of 2018.
Here's where the top 10 prospects ranked coming out of high school:

1. Evan Neal (2019): #1 OT, #7 overall
2. Ikem Ekwonu (2019): #36 OG, #612 overall
3. Charles Cross (2019): #5 OT, #28 overall
4. Trevor Penning (2017): not ranked
5. Bernhard Raimann (2017): #122 TE, #2950 overall
6. Daniel Faalele (2018): #19 OT, #302 overall
7. Nicholas Petit-Frere (2018): #1 OT, #7 overall
8. Darian Kinnard (2018): #22 OT, #314 overall
9. Abraham Lucas (2017): #50 OT, #499 overall
10. Matt Waletzko (2018): #308 OT, #3956 overall

So NPF is actually the #2 OT prospect in this draft from his recruiting class (2018). So if you want to say that Stud "turned" NPF in anything, it was from the #1 OT recruit in his class to the #2 OT draft prospect in his class. Not exactly some monumental failure on Stud's part.
  • Third, if you look at the list of top 10 OT prospect, you can see that the rankings are all over the place - Neal, Cross, and NPF were 5-star prospects; Ekwonu, Faalele, Kinnard, and Lucas were low-4*, high-3* prospects; and Penning, Raimann, and Waletzko were for all intents and purposes unranked. Recruiting and developing OL is more of a crapshoot that any other position. NPF is a projected 1st-round pick, which means that he was developed to about his perceived potential.
  • Fourth, despite being the #1 OT in his class, NPF was always somewhat of a risky prospect due to his lack of ideal size (listed at 6-foot-6, 272 pounds, but probably more like 6-foot-5, 260 pounds). In fact, NPF did develop slowly at Ohio State because he did have some difficulty in bulking up to his current (estimated) 315 pounds. Despite packing on more than 50 pounds, NPF was able to keep his natural athleticism while moving from RT to LT in 2021. Does Stud get any credit for that?
  • Fifth, Thayer Munford was the #28 OT prospect in the class of 2017. If Munford is drafted higher than the #28 OT, would Stud get any credit for developing him?
  • Finally, is Larry Johnson Sr. ever going to get ripped for turning Tyreke Smith (#4 DE, #34 overall) into a projected Day Three draftee? Or Tommy Togiai (#3 DT, #55 overall) into a 4th round pick? Or the perennial underachievement of 5-star recruits Zach Harrison and Taron Vincent? And how about Brian Hartline forcing WR1 to transfer to Alabama because he couldn't develop him here? Or Urban Meyer forcing Heisman winner and top overall draftee Joe Burrow to transfer to LSU because he liked Dwayne Haskins better. You see how quickly these "arguments" can turn stupid.
Stud bashing is lazy and largely unwarranted. Now that he's gone, some of you are going to need to get a new hobby.

I know we're all Buckeye fans, but it's hard to argue with the list of OT's ahead of him. You're correct, he does do a lot well and that should provide some stability and staying power in the league for multiple years if he can stay healthy. End of 2nd, early 3rd would not be a bad spot for him to go. Hopefully it's with a good franchise.

I was thinking if Cincy grabbed him at the end of the 2nd I would be thrilled. Hell, end of the 1st wouldn't upset me at all, as I do think he's just a little underrated right now on the boards. Thought he was looking at top 15 overall heading into the season and he had a really good year.

Would like to say that the interviews with the Buckeyes in the combine were exceptional. Eloquent, soft-spoken, and answered with an intelligence that bespokes an Ohio State grad. Yes, I wear scarlet and gray glasses. However, was kinda upset that out tOSU players were not ranked higher than they were projected by other Buckeye rooters, instead by 'outsiders'. These talking heads have their opinions, of course, that's what they are paid for. Not that I'm aware, but no one ever reviews their 'rankings' after the fact to see how well they did. Like a corporate five year plan being reviewed after five years to see how well the long-term planners did.....anyway, my money is on tOSU players being snapped up by the pro teams higher than these lists. Given that each team's projected 'want list' of players is more protected than nuclear launch codes, if there is anything 'leaked' then it's probably a red herring, designed to cause speculation by those drafting below them. We'll see. Much depends on the needs of the teams, and who knows. The Bengals drafting a WR when they painfully needed OL studs turned out to be the winning card (although OL depth wasn't great). Thanks for all the input here, believe tOSU coaching plus the talent will yield higher than expected results for our players. Go Bucks!
