Out-of-State Players to Watch

For Recruit Nick Rice, the Buckeyes Have Always Been No. 1

2017 kicker Nick Rice on his unofficial visit to Ohio State

In 1986, Ohio State held an open tryout for kickers and punters. Approximately 200 candidates showed up, each player attempting three kicks. After rounds of eliminating people, only two were invited to winter workouts; one punter and one kicker. The punter chosen was Brian Rice, my uncle.

This tryout was held during his sophomore year. After over a year since playing competitive football, Rice figured his kicking days were over, but from this experience came something that has changed his life. Although Brian did not make it on the roster, he established connections that have influenced both himself and his son, Nick Rice.

Nick has always been a Buckeye. Every year when he traveled with his family to Ohio from Georgia, it was important for them to spend a lot of their time on Ohio State’s campus. At a young age, Nick met Gene Smith who let him watch the Buckeyes practice, run sprints with the team, get autographs from players, and tour the locker room. Another time, Nick and Brian got to watch the quarterback and wide recievers camp where he was then re-introduced to Jim Tressel.

To Brian, Ohio State is a great, personable environment. These instances and connections have left a huge impact on Nick.

Nick Rice is a junior kicker at Millcreek High School in Hoschton, Georgia where he does place kicking and kickoffs for the football team. The four-star prospect had his second unofficial visit to Ohio State on Saturday during the Minnesota game after attending last year’s Rutgers game in similar fashion. Nick has been attending Ohio State’s Kicking Camps for the past two years and in Georgia, participates in the national Chris Sailor Showcase Camps. Out of the participants nationwide in this camp, Nick is in the top 20 percent of all kickers for the class of 2017. Nick’s longest field goal kick was for 65 yards.

For Nick, Ohio State is his dream school. “It is definately my top choice, I just have so many family connections to Ohio State.” Nick said. Even though he is looking at other programs such as Arkansas State, Georgia Southern, and Kennesaw State as back-up plans, the Buckeyes are by far his top choice. He has not recieved any offers yet from Ohio State, but he is hoping one will come during his senior year.
