Reds Tidbits (2011 Season)

Reds sign Bronson to 3 year $35 million extension. 15-17 wins and 200 + innings every year, I'd say he's well worth it. Now it's time to get Votto signed up long term.

I don't like it at all. Way too much for him. He can be solid, and has a rubber arm. Yet almost $12 million a year is too much. I was happy with them picking up the option to get one more year out of him, but 3 more years at essentially the option money is too much. It is not something this team should be spending money on.

I didn't mind the option, but I'm not sure about the extension. I'm not worried about performance from Arroyo - sure, he's going to start aging a bit, but he has strengths that age well.

I think they absolutely needed Arroyo for next year. With all the young guys, he's the team's stopper right now like it or not. This team's window is opening, and they need guys like Arroyo at the front end to help keep a young team steady. On the back end of this though - I think they're gonna wish they had some of that money to keep a younger guy. At this point all we can do is keep our fingers crossed I guess.

One thing that may come in to play here is that this extension could allow Walt to trade one of the pitching "prospects" and not hurt the overall depth OR if BA continues to put up the numbers it wouldn't be that hard to trade him. Either way I think they needed him around for another year or two and as in any negotiation they had to give a little, thus the 3rd year.

I'm still in my happy place with the Reds, this isn't a thong bunching deal by any stretch.

Ohh yes. A new day has certainly dawned when Jax is positive regarding the Reds roster moves. LOL

I agree and it could have gone either way there after the definite 1 year option. Had to get 1 year minimum. The other years I could take or leave. Get Bruce and Votto locked in now and lets go win a championship!

Good thing the Padres cleared Gonzalez's $5.5M so they could give Harang $4M.

According to John Fay, who talked to Harang, Aaron was honestly surprised by the deal. He was just hoping to get a minor league offer from anyone.

His agent better get something nice for Christmas.

michael young was apparently part of trade talks yesterday. that would make our infield even deeper with experience

He makes a ton of money the next 3 years ($16 million per), and I don't think the Rangers are looking to pay part of it unless they really have to. For the Reds to pull that off the Rangers would have to eat more than 1/2 that contract. If the Rangers deal him it will be a salary dump, and the Reds are not a team in that position.

The Cincinnati Reds have reached agreement on a six-year, guaranteed $51 million contract with outfielder Jay Bruce, a baseball source told ESPN.com.

The deal includes a club option for a seventh year that could bring the overall value of the contract to $63 million, the source said. Bruce has a partial no-trade clause and the opportunity to earn additional money through award bonuses.
